On to Round 4

http://cbi.comicbookresources.com/cbi3/round-four-the-final-four/

This round’s guest judge is artist Francis Manapul, who recently signed an exclusive with DC Comics and along with the legendary Jim Shooter will be taking over the Legion book starting in December. Francis also provides us with this week’s four-page plot script featuring the Legion of Super-Heroes.

As for this Round's Prize

Francis will hand-pick one of you and submit your samples to Legion editor Mike Marts for some invaluable feedback and a really good networking opportunity. Incidentally, Mike got me my first “big” assignment at Marvel way back when (”Black Panther” #57-58), so I can say from experience that he’s a good guy to have in your corner. How’s that for a bonus prize?

4 pages this time. Let's see if the contestants can handle one more page in the same amount of time.

Read the script. Can't wait to see what Caio will do with it.

And I'm sure Dan will have a blast too!

Current!

...probably. :)

That should be interesting!

As Manapul didn't make any request, I think that the contestants will use the Legion that they liked best...

Ouch... Confusing continuity... time travel... Crisis... head hurts...

I don't know if there is a LOT of differences, but I'll use as reference a Legion story draw by Alan Davis that I really love.:D

Really?

I thought that you were going all Swan on us! - And that's a compliment, by the way...

Oh, and what "current"? For the looks of the current DC Universe, I think that there's at least 325.432 different "Legions" running around over there...

Damn Didio and those Silver Age lovers:rolleyes:

Mmmm, Curt Swan...

I might go for a sort of amalgam, not sure yet. But you can bet Bouncing Boy will be in there...!

And maybe Matter-Eater Lad if I'm feeling cheeky!

Although that's only because I like making use of the word "plethora" :p

Not at all... at least for 2 people in the competition...
For winning over the Judges, notable members of the industry and perhaps editors that might consider you for a job?
Very big problem.

Good luck.

Though a lot of times the company supplies the reference to the artist if requested.

A company like DC will certainly ship out the most current books to a new artist on a title. That's easier and faster than sending back pages.

And don't most (maybe only high end) creators at Marvel and DC get a box of like, most everything each month? Pretty sure Warren Ellis does... or used to. I dunno.

That's a very good point. However, if the era or costumes aren't specified in the script, it could be left up to each artist to interpret.

I've read that artists can ask the editor for reference for the companie's library. Such as Darwyn Cooke getting Silver Age reference from DC for New Frontier.

This is true. But having characters from different Legion eras in different era costumes appear at the same time would be weird.

yeah.... and we all saw how much flack an artist got last round for taking a few liberties with costume design.

me... I like seeing some artists' different takes on characters and costume design... imagine where we would be if Todd Mcfarlane never made Spider-Man's eyes really big?

...But I think for this competition, they are looking for artists to show that they have researched and understand the characters (and especially the script).

Good Luck, everyone... being that I don't know anything about these characters, I'm excited to see everyone's last page... speaking of which, if this was gonna be a 4 pager, couldn't we have made a 2 page spread for that last shot?

That would have been bad a$$

I'm anxious to see how far the remaining (Fantastic?) Four go with the last splash panel page. I've always enjoyed the well-done million-characters-on-a page splash pages and respect the amount of time that they take. So that's the page I'm most looking forward to from everybody.

I'm on the DC and Oni comp lists. For me, it took a year of working at DC to get on the list. It was sooner at Oni. But if I need older reference, or material from WB, I can usually get it. If not, I go out and buy it myself and expense it come tax time.

The artists should get comps, yeah, but for ref they will most likely get jpegs. Lot quicker and easier to send out images of just the characters you need them to draw than to ship out books and have them sift through every page.

That's what we do, anyway.

you guys can do any Legion era. Although it's a good idea to stick to one era of legion designs and not have some from the original and some from the reboot. Pick the era that suits you best. :)

and with regards to reference yeah, my editor sent me a few books before I started to get me up to speed and anything else on the script that I can't find he'll fire me off a jpg real quick. I also use google image search a LOT when I was doing my redesigns to look at the costumes from different era.

here are some sights that I found useful:

Thanks for the clarification, Francis...

man... I am really interested to see who chooses what.... Me, personally, I would love to see the old school team, just because I think those characters may seem slightly out of date with the superhero "norm" these days... and somewhat more of a challenge to make the characters seem interesting...

Exactly! I almost said in my original post that I thought I had to rely on the Wayback machine to find these kind of sites anymore, lol. As a webdesigner myself, people can find some embarrassing sites on there that I did ten years ago.

Depends on how you file. Whether you're an independent contractor (freelancer), small business, or incorporation, you can write off a certain amount of research material. Consult your local tax office for details ;)
