... Are these stories a part of the mainstream DCU?

Well, the short answer is yes. For evidence, we have Lex no longer being president, and a new Supergirl.

More specifically, S/B isn't usually necessary to following what's going on with the characters in their respective books, or in the DCU.

When Jeph Loeb was writing the book, yes. It was one of the cornerstones of the DCU. Since then, it's been an overblown Superman & Batman Classified book with stories nobody is talking about or cares about. I can't actually remember the last time anybody tried talking about what was going on in Superman/Batman.

Like Supergirl, this baby of Loeb's probably should have been put out to pasture when he left for Marvel.

The last I remember anyone talk about what happened in this book was issue #26 which was a tribute to Sam Loeb. No one cared after that.

I too lost interest after issue 26. Sure, the series wasn't perfect under Loeb, but atleast, it was an engaging read, with superb artwork. Loeb writes the chararacters of Superman and Batman excellently(especially their monologues).

Say what you will about Loeb's often wildly inconsistent writing (particularly once his son's condition really got grim), he always gave readers enough bang for their buck every issue. The end result may have made no sense whatsoever, but the ride sure was fun.

Although, given the ending Loeb revealed in the final storyarc, things not making any sense actually make a lot of sense....

Why the hell doesn't DC just re-name this book for what it really is, World's Finest. Those good old issues where self contained, and had nothing to do with whatever was going on in the DCU, just like Superman/Batman, at least now anyway.

I was thinking the same thing.

I actually enjoyed the fact that the book WAS a cornerstone of the DCU under Loeb; many of the precursors to the current state of things were first seen in Superman/Batman (the first references to the coming crisis, the return of Supergirl, the re-emergence of the Multiverse, the foreshadowing of Darkseid's hand in Final Crisis, etc). That so much of the DC status quo was shaped in this one title only drives home the point that Superman and Batman have always been, and always will be, the heart of the DCU.

Recent arcs haven't been as explicit with laying out world-shaping events, but there are still little clues hidden here and there. The current arc, for example, is rather obvious - bringing the Fourth World center stage just prior to Death of the New Gods.

When Darkseid was waiting inside the Kent house for Superman to come home (probably ate Ma Kent's pie, too), that's when I knew it was time to drop it. Wait, it was either that or when Batman was able to get two punches off Darkseid with special gauntlets. Whichever came first.

I dropped it after the Grenn Lantern arc, I haven't a clue what's going on in that book now.

That's when I departed too. When you can't make a team-up of Superman, Batman, Hal Jordan and Kilowog cool, you''ve failed on so many levels.
