I went down to Portland Oregon this weekend to attend Wonder Woman Day, and hang with a cousin I hadn't gotten a chance to see in 9 years. He was getting rid of some old comics and wanted to know if I wanted any of them. Anyway one of the that caught my eye was a Silver Surfer one. I figured I've never gotten around to reading Silver Surfer so now is a good time as any.

It's Volume 2 number 1 from June 1982, Written by Stan Lee and Artwork by John Bryne. I'm planning to read this tonight, but I'd like to know more about the series. But I can't find the passage in Wikipedia that really talks about volume 2. Can anyone out there tell me more about volume two and where it goes from here?

That's it. The entirety of Vol. 2 is that one issue. Volume 3 is the one that Englehart was the initial writer on.

Oh I see. So I take it either Volume two either sold that badly or Stan Lee was shifting over to Editor and Cheif and didn't have time for anything else?

No, this was 1982, years after Stan had stopped working at Marvel full time.

I always thought it was intended as a double-sized one-shot issue.

So its a complete story then? Cool, that means I won't be left on a typical comic cliffhanger.

I believe so, but for some bizarre reason, they count it as Vol. 2.

BTW, does anyone remember the latest SS ongoing? Man, I thought that the first 3 issues were great and going somewhere... what a disappointment...

I remember it being a decompressed story about some woman and her daughter, with only brief glimpses of the Silver Surfer. The same thing was going on with Hulk at the time. It's like we were at war and Marvel was forced to ration their superhero appearances. Eventually, Quesada realized that when people buy a Silver Surfer comic, they want to see, you know, the Silver Surfer. But it was too late.

The Most recent SS ongoing is the worst piece of crap in my 15 longboxes.

First of all delays and creative team changes killed any chance it had, but as has already been said, it was hardly about SS at all, and where he was used was completely out of character.

I'd have preferred to never see another SS ongoing than to suffer through that garbage.

I remember that I got the first 2 or 3 issues and I was exited, but then the story led nowhere, and I think the writer changed inside the first story? I got until issue #7. That is maybe the worst comic I remember reading, out of 5000... I enjoyed the then current run on Hulk though very much.

The Hulk thing was a different situation, at least for the first year. It's the remaining Bruce Jones stuff that tainted the first 12 issues with JRJr. It was definitely a weirder vibe, feeling the effects of the Hulk, rather than witnessing them first hand, but for a short time, it worked. And then it didn't. But even when Hulk didn't appear, Bruce was always front and center.
