I noticed on some of my 1970's marvel comics that the covers are super thin. You can see the inside print through the cover. Otherwise they would grade great. Does this affect the grade?

I recall from 1970 to 1972, there were frequently multiple covers on mainstream Marvel comics like, Hulk, Daredevil, Fantastic Four. Far from valuing these as rarities that would drive the price up on a resale market, we veiwed these as errors, and that they would be LESS valuable someday... so we removed the outside cover and saved it in a special file folder. Are they worth anything? I doubt it.

Hi Thothy;

How are things in that time-well of yours?

Does this affect the grade?

Certain printing errors can and do effect grade. I have a couple of Marvel Super-Heroes Comics #15 (Medusa issues), where the black and red ink of the back cover was still sticky-wet when the comics were printed and stacked, and it clung to the the front covers, leaving nasty splotches everywhere.

That does effect the desire to own, and the value, since this was a fluke effecting only part of the print run and better copies are available.

For an entire run of an issue, all using the same paper stock, and given that print through is pretty common for almost all comical books, especially Marvel Comical books in that time frame, I would ponder to speculate that it has minor impact.

Should be added that certain comical bags, and their chemical reaction with cover and newstock can increase the ability of the ink to seep through the paper over time. Red ink in particular.

More perspective on this: the print through on a lot comics in this time frame was vividly obvious from the moment the comic was printed. The degree to which it increased over time, depending on the storage conditions, added some or a lot to the affliction. But it was indeed there from the get-go.

I've noticed this as well. I have a few comics... an Iron Fist is one of them that are almost see-through. Not sure if it is a different cover stock or thinner cut but it is very noticeable especially on the white or light colored covers.

WOW! I remember that!
I got lucky that my copy didn't have that problem, but I've seen others where it is all over the cover. I always wondered where this came from!

Does anyone remember the black splotches of printers ink that marred the inside of Captain Marvel #20-21-22? As I recall, it had Marvel on the cover along with someone in a green cap who was running him through a giant maze.

Was this error present in your part of the country?
