Great job there skinshark.

Yeah. That's a great rendition of ROM, please don't see this as knocking the art at all, but ye gods the character design did not age well.

I think it's delightfully retro. Kitschy, I dig the hell out of ROM's look. It's so outdated, it's fresh now.

Why? Because he doesn't transform or have a hundred useless pieces of armor jutting out all over the place?

Actually, he does have useless pieces of armor jutting out. On the chest, shoulders and knees. But no, because his head is made out of a toaster, and he has mitten hands. How are Dire Wraiths supposed to be in fear of hands like these?

I got an idea.

I know we have some talented folk floating around CBR.

Someone redesign ROM and update his look.

1. He must recognizable.

2. No slices of toast sticking out the back of his head.

3. He must be holding the neutralizer.

3. He must be holding the neutralizer.

Even the Neutralizer was a little too much function over form. In that it resembled the toy a little too much. And honestly, I get more of a 50s vibe from ROM than 80s. Bug-eyed robot. He's more This Island Earth than he is Star Wars.

I love Rom from his mitten hands to his red LED eyeballs. Is there some way those of us who aren't in Oregon can enjoy, or at least find out some more details, about this show?

Thanks all...I'm just blown away how many people love Rom. It's just strange because it only ran for what 70 issues? Amazing...

Okay, no neutralizer.

But what's also interesting is that some of the other spaceknights looked better than him (i.e.- Starshine version 2.0). They could've given him an 'upgrade'.

If so,,,,,,,my god!

The toy was first. ROM was a licensed property.

I just think they did a much better job fleshing out, say, the Transformers, from aesthetically questionable toys into useable characters. Granted, a lot of that was probably more from the cartoon show. Because if Ironhide looked exactly like his toy counterpart...

75, and four annuals. Plus he guest starred in Power Man and Iron Fist, Marvel Two-in-One and Hulk.

And really, that means the book ran for over six years. Transformers only ran for three seasons, and look what that did to people.

The toy version of Ironhide (and Ratchet) were complete disappointments. Rolling tank robot that easily broke into two pieces, with a lame smiley-face sticker behind the windshield head? And of course, I got one for X-mas one year. :(

Rich Johnson had an interesting tidbit regarding ROM:

TOO LITTLE ROM

[Yellow Light]

I understand that the publishing rights to "GI Joe" are up for grabs. After the success of the "Transformers" and with a "GI Joe" movie in production, Hasbro are looking around.

Devil's Due are certainly in line to retake the franchise, but so are Marvel, who are pushing that the "Transformers" movie which made so much money for Hasbro, used a lot of content generated by Marvel.

One peculiar wrinkle is that Marvel and Hasbro are still in debate over the rights to "Rom." The original patent on the toy has lapsed, so it's all about the development of the property, and who actually did what. There's all sorts of interesting legal questions being asked. Those Dire Wraiths didn't come from nowhere. And the upcoming "Essential Power Man And Iron Fist" had to miss out the issue that featured Rom.

It's all good for lawyers...

Not that the first one was bad, but I like the second attempt a lot better. The head is slightly de-toasterized, and I like the TMNT fingers better than the mitten hands.

I like that while you modified his head a bit you kept the same boxiness and total lack of facial features. One of the more interesting features of Rom for me was that he managed to have a successful comic book without having a face. It wasn't until I looked at your redesign, however, that I realized that it's sort of odd that he has lights built into the lower part of his ribcage. I'm glad you kept those there since it helps keep him from being a solid slab of silver/grey but it's one of those things I know realize I simply accepted at the time without putting too much thought into it.
