Hey guys! I'm a night owl. Just me,a pencil, and itunes. Post what you listen to while you draw or write, or just music you enjoy! People we might never have heard of before that you think others might enjoy. Music and art really go hand and hand with me...I'd love to download some of the stuff yall are jamming. I noticed little bits of this topic spread over the threads...I wanted an easy access place for us to go for new selections. I'll break the ice!

Right Now
Bruce Springsteens new CD Magic-just good americana music, love the song magic.
For this assignment, its about fun poppy music...so unfortuantely I'm going to download the new matchbox 20 cd...the headline song is catchy as hell...and I think it will evoke some high energy vibes with this assignment.

Always play at least once a night
Elliott Smith-Love so many of his songs...great song writer. Kind of poetic. He has a depressed tone, a real melancholy feel. And unfortunately he backed it all up by killing himself a few years ago.

Jim Croce greatest hits.My all time favorite singer songwriter and CD. A real working man/common guy feel to his music. Great storyteller.

rage against the machine(my favorite band in highschool, listen to them when I get tired)
Jack Johnson
Postal service
jackson 5
The darkness(love'm)
I jam to alot of timberland beats too...that new song apologize is awesome.
70's and 80's classic country...i really hate new country music, just poorly written imho.
And I'm a 80's pop/rock whore.
My favorite video game is guitarhero II, I've beaten 38 songs on expert so far,10 more of those bastards togo. i bought Halo 3 and haven't gotten to play it b/c of the contest.

Can't wait to hear yalls suggestions!

Best,
nick

Tool is probably my weapon of choice most often when I'm sitting down to draw. It's the right mix of aggression and rhythm.

Dude we have so many of the same favorites....my girl wants me to try and find the De Beers comercial song...the one where they cover that cat stevens song... its the comercial where the dude wakes up and surprises his GF by putting a necklace around her neck, then she wakes up and finds it...and the homo smiles pretending he's asleep. Oh God if I get asked why I'm not romantic like that again one more time...if I see that dude on the street he's got a punch in the forehead coming. Anyways...i can't figure out if its cat power or not thats covering it and she wants me to find the song. So far no luck. Thanks for the replys fellas...I got to stop surfing itunes and actually start drawing!

Jack Johnson is pretty popular in this household as are similar artists like James Blunt, John Mayer, Duncan Sheik, etc. Good stuff to have on in the background.

Other folks I'm listening a lot to lately: Amy Winhouse, Beastie Boys (probably my all-time favorite band after the Beatles), Lily Allen, Matt Dusk, Pink Martini, Radiohead, Weezer (my third fave of all time?)...

I'm a big fan of old school hip hop and catchy danceable stuff too (from all eras and genres)... but not while I'm trying to write because then it's hard to sit still :)

I used to live near D.C, let's see, some of the "unknown" local D.C. bands I'm familiar with would be Cinnamon Toast, Peter Hayes, Tuscadero, Candy Machine, Eggs, Jawbox, Trampoline, DJ Bootimus Maximus, Shudder to Think, The Ropers, Chisel, Mud.... I wonder if any of them are still around.

Makes me miss the 9:30 club.

Here's what you do. You take all the bands that are on your list. You go to pandora.com (http://pandora.com) and add them to your custom radio station. Then pandora will play songs by those bands, and throw in other random bands that are similar. You give thumbs up/down and it zeroes in on what you like. It's awesome. It's free. http://pandora.com

Sometimes, I'll put in a band name, and wonder why the stuff that comes up doesn't come up for another very similar band. I dunno, I think it takes a bit of time for it to really build a proper playlist for you. And what it uses to define 'similar' might be different than what I do.

But, that 'radio' thing doesn't always work for me. Sometimes I want something specific like chilled out jazzy stuff, other times I want Dillenger Escape Plan. It really depends on what I'm drawing.

Lately though, I haven't had time to draw anything, or fuck with Pandora. Stoopid job. Stoopid money. :(

Yeah, the more you use it, and rate songs thumbs up/down, the better it gets.

So you make one quickmix setting that has the chilled out jazz artists/songs, and it will make a radio station that plays that. You make another setting that has Dillinger Escape Plan or whatever. You can make as many different stations as you want. I like it because it exposes you to new artists. Sometimes you like them, sometimes no.

Some of the bands on my playlist:
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Interpol
Jesus & Mary Chain
Kasabian
Keane
Kings of Leon
Razorlight
Richard Ashcroft
The Stills
Kula Shaker

Beverly Hills was one song on an otherwise very excellent album. They have so many great tunes over the years. They are great to see live because every album they do has 6-8 songs that become sing-along classics.

By the way has anyone heard of Weezer long lost album "Songs from the Black Hole"?

It was to be their second album and was a "Space Opera". Some of the songs made it into Pinkerton.

Weezer lost it after Pinkerton. What did they do that warrented listening to it? Is repeating yourself really that interesting? The Green album is proof of this.

NIN? After The Downward Spiral... I'll give Trent that he tried to branch out, he just didn't do a very good job of it. Granted, I think the guy's a fucking hack who's only accomplishment is ripping of the people who came before him. And that's different than being influenced. His last record? Wow... boring. Like, really boring.

But yeah I feel ya', debate but don't hate.

Usually I have one of the commercial free government youth radio stations on. Talk shows and genre shows with mostly newer music. So it's stuff like Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, Britney Spears, The Knife...

When I pop in a CD it's probably one of the following: Pet Shop Boys, Megadeth, Rolling Stones, Eminem, Iron Maiden, Public Enemy or a soundtrack.

Every now and then I put on a dvd collection, one of the Star Trek series most likely.
