Here is assignment #3

Robert Kirkman provides a script plot for a scene involving his creation Invincible and Invincible artist Ryan Ottley will be this round's guest judge.

The winner of this round (as in our top vote-getter this time) gets to draw an original pin-up to be published in a future issue of Invincible.

Really cool to see Ryan Ottley judging this one. It's kinda cool to see people I post with over at Penciljack.com not only participating in the contest, but alumni from the site judging it as well.

Seeing everyone's take on Invincible should be very cool, and I have to say I'm looking forward to this round much more than the previous to.

One thing I haven't figured out about Invincible, does it have a particular city it's centered in i.e. Metropolis, Gotham, New York?

Ha! I love how his costume is basically Image's logo. (I'm sure that's been pointed out a million times, but I just noticed.)

Something about Nick's style does seem to say 'squid tentacle' doesn't it. :p And Jose designs his own panels even when he's not supposed to! Could be a great week for those guys!!

Hey, do any of you Invincible readers know where he's generally located? I'm afraid I only read the first two trades :o The script seems to let you decide, but I was wondering if he has a home base in say, New York, or something.

Every round I'm more anxious to see how our "heroes" will do with the assignment! And this one is just great, they just have the plot so I think it'll be much easier to see who really have it in them and who gets completely lost without a full script.

sgt pepper,

Please stop it with this issue. We look into everyones vote and check to see if each vote is valid. Just because the outcome doesn't match what you think, doesn't make it wrong.

Maybe. I love what he's done so far but he may fall into a trap of putting too much emphasis on the pictures instead of the story without a tight script to hold him back.
Does that make sense?

This is going to be a big challenge for the contestant. Without such a bare bones description, we'll really get to see what kind of storytelling and creative visualization chops they have. This is the kind of thing where pure drawing/draftsmanship and style won't be enough to get over the hump.

Should be interesting.

Y'know, this vitriolic bull**** isn't even funny. I'm sure it's been said elsewhere, but just to stress the point: The fact that a very small handful of people got their votes discounted for using multiple accounts in no way diminishes Caio's talent, or the support of all the other 100-plus people who voted for him. If he wasn't a gifted artist, he wouldn't have been chosen to participate in CBI to begin with.

I invite everyone to take a look here (http://www.mbbforum.com/mbb/viewtopic.php?t=2010), here (http://www.mbbforum.com/mbb/viewtopic.php?t=9496) and here (http://www.mbbforum.com/mbb/viewtopic.php?t=10217) to see what I'm talking about. The guy has truly developed a fan base, and it's not recent.

So if you don't like the results, stop bitching about it and campaign for the candidate you support.

Hey guys, thank you for creating such a terrific forum.I want to get more and more involved everyday.

Just to set the record straight; it's true most of CPWIII's votes did sign up the night of the first round. This is due to the fact that CPWIII is very modest (he's the only guy that I know who uses the words "Golly" & "Shucks" in his venaculer) and he didn't tell anyone about the contest. I only learned about it at 7PM that first night from his girlfriend and yes we had pushed quite an extensive campaign. However, let it be known that any e-mails, texts, blogs or bulletins that went out told everyone to look at all of the contestants not just CPWIII. That's just how he roles. (Did you notice that he doesn't even vote for himself?)

Anyways, if you'd like to make sure that any blogs or bulletins are on the up& up just friend CPWIII or myself(my URL is: myspace.com/robertmisko) on myspace and we'll be happy to accept you as friends.

Best of luck to all of the contestants in round #3.

Oh and if I may suggest; SGT. Pepper why don't you change your name to Sinn-a-KILLLLL.(Meeeoooowwww!!!)

So let's focus on what this thread is about: Round 3's assignment.

What will you be looking for/hope to see the contestants do?

From Jose:
I would like to see his realistic style applied to the almost cartoon world of Invincible. Will his style lean more toward the lighter tone of Invincible, or will he bring a whole new look to Invincible? And which will be the better approach?

From Dan:
I'd like to see how his style applies to a superhero yarn like this. Can he exceed the limitations of the style he's chosen to work in and interweave the visual world of Invincible with his own style? I'm hoping to see a throwback to the Fantastic Four fighting monsters as drawn by Kirby kind of approach.

From Nick:
Screw it, I just want to see him draw those tenacles!

From Jon:
Can he pull out the stops and deliver the proper facial expressions and anatomical tweaks needed to satisfy the judges this round?

From Caio:
He's taken the first two rounds, can he justify it with a really impressive submission this round? Can his fanbase help give him three for three?

From CPWilsonIII:
He proved he can generate dynamic action shots with Aspen, can he pull it off for a full three pages?

Kalyan Pokala

From Jose: Script Adherence has been a problem for you. Hopefully in this round, with the script being much more open, you can really shine.

From Dan: I'd love to see your style doing Invincible: I just want to see improvement from last round, which had really severe era-consistency problems.

From Nick: Go all out dude, no one can defeat your Mad Genius skills with tentacles.

From Jon: Time to step it up. Your style is unique and neat to look at and it's time to kick it up a notch. You have the talent to do it, take advantage of the looser script.

From Caio: Something worthy of winning. I've been unimpressed by your work in this competition compared to your great promise pre-CBI. Maybe you're not used to deadlines, or being set to a script but you need to tighten things up and your characters have to ditch the funky poses.

From Wilson: When you are on, you're on. Evidence: the Sketch Challenges you've dominated on Ten Ton when you put out your best work. You're going to have to throw down the hammer to beat Nick - The Tentacle King!

Dan: This round will make or break him. I lean towards make but while I'm sure I'll like what he does, I think others have already decided to ignore his clean, retro style (and that is a sad commentary on comics fandom.)

Jose: This is his round to lose. The man obviously feels constrained by full scripts so I can't wait to see him run wild. Robert Kirkman's script is so incredibly loose (almost too lose, but we'll see) that Jose will have free reign to show what he's made of.

Charles III: I have no idea about him this time. I know he'll make it work, but will it get him the top spot this time? I expect to see him in the finals

Caio: On artwork alone he can win this round and competition easily, but the voting controversy will come back to haunt him.

Nick: He definitely deserves to be this far in the competition but, in my opinon, he is way too detailed and busy in his artwork and he is needlessly vulgar in his depictions of women--and I like cheesecake in comics! But Octoboss might be just the kind of character to show off what Nick can really do.

Jon: He is the dark horse for me. I haven't really paid attention to his submissions but since he hasn't done anything to make me say "No, you won't win this time" he might manage to sneak into the finale. We'll see...

It may actually be Jose that is in danger of not making it to the next round, as he had the third least amount of votes in both rounds.

He may very well turn in the best dynamic pages in this round, but it is possible he could receive the least amount of votes, believe it or not.

You're right. I think Jose also has qualities in his art that turn people off. Those very distinct qualities, however, make me crazy for his work. I know he's having fun drawing for this round because now he can do whatever he wants without a tight script chaffing his artistry. Unless he does a really bad job--and that ain't gonna happen--he should not get the boot this round. But I'm saving my vote for the person who does the best, no matter how others vote. Defensive or offensive voting would just leave me sour in the end.

Whether he stays in or not, I think he'll be finding work real soon. So in a sense he wins either way.

No doubt. I think he should be on more serious books. The typical superhero book or stories without emotional weight wouldn't jibe with his style. But a war or crime story, perhaps a romantic tale, or a big horror or fantasy story--those would be stories that would benefit from his artistry.
