X-Men First Class (Vol. 2) #5
Writer - Jeff Parker
Artist - Roger Cruz
As always, this issue of First Class opens with a fun little recap page, this time including a note from Hank to Robert and Warren regarding the proper care of his comics along with the replies from Bobby and War.
The main story itself opens with the X-Men on assignment helping the Army search for the Hulk in the wilderness of Colorado. The Hulk ends up finding the X-Men, and not surprisingly, lets them know he just wants to be left alone. Most of this issue is one long fight scene between the Hulk (noticeably holding back from killing the kids as he just wants them to leave him alone) and the X-Men (attempting to subdue the Hulk). Eventually, Rick Jones shows up and tries to stop the X-Men from attacking the Hulk after letting them know how the Hulk saved his life; however by this time the Hulk is to enraged to be calmed down. When all hope seems lost Xavier, who was coordinating the X-Men's efforts with the Army at a remote base, is able to gain control of the Hulk's mind and calm him down so that he reverts back to Bruce Banner (who Hank is awesomed by, lol). In the end Xavier learns that the Army only wants to capture the Hulk so they can use him as a weapon, so the X-Men decided to leave Banner and Jones where they are and pretend they never found the Hulk.
Definitely not my favorite issue of the series by a long shot, but it had it's fun little moments. If you want to read an all out brawl between the X-Men and the Hulk, World War Hulk: X-Men delivers much better on that note. I'd give this issue a 3 out of 5. Still, this is a book I look forward to greatly every month!
The issue also featured a couple quick backup stories. The first backup teams up Jeff "Paranormal" Parker with Colleen "Creepy" Coover again for a very fun little Halloweenish 2-page tale. Super super cute and funny, this was the highlight of the issue for me (5 out of 5 for this quick vignette). :D
The second backup is a Mini Marvels tale by Chris Giarrusso. Also cute, but it doesn't feature the O5 (it's about Johnny Storm interviewing to join the X-Men), so, who really cares? ;)
