View Full Version : Something In The Way- Die By the Sword #2-

The previews just went up for this Wednesday's release of X-Men: Die By the Sword #2. And there's an often talked about tease/form of censorship that really gets abused in the issue's preview. How can you have characters like Psylocke running around and never have a nipslip or crotchshot when they're wearing butt floss? Easy... cover it up with random objects or word balloons! Check it out...
http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=12161
Page #4- Bottom right panel... Betsy is thrown to the ground, and where you would see her spreadeagled like an OBGYN exam, Marvel tastefully opted to just put a "SLAM!" over the naughty bits. Wow. Slamming Psylocke in the crotch, go figure. Warren Worthington just got jealous.
Page #7- Top right panel, Sage enters the fray with a flying kick while in a short skirt. Again, you'd probably be able to determine if Sage's carpet matches the drapes if not for a strategic, penciled in gun barrel aimed across the page at Psylocke's head. Marvel took the high road and covered up her girl parts with a big, cylindrical gun barrel. Not that it's phallic, or anything.
Page #7- Third panel, Sage kicks another guy in the head in the same short skirt. Things got a little too cheeky, and Marvel didn't want you ogling Sage's hinder, and thus, tastefully put a "BAM!" from her kick to the fella's head right over her tush. Getting Bammed in the *ss. Sage, you scamp.
These are but three examples, I know this stuff happens more often. But three times in two pages? No frikkin' way that's an accident. If anyone has their favorite "near-misses" censorship moments from X-Men through the years, feel free to post scans.
I mean, I could be offended that Claremont just wrote his pet, Sage, to save the day (all while not having her Sunglasses fall off) and come in fighting to save a helpless Betsy, who's a trained ninja. But I'm not going to fuss over that, thanks to the hilarity of onomatopoiea covering their hoo-hoos.
Discuss.
That is just hilarious. It's like a censored porn comic. "OKay here i want a couple of crotch shots but make sure to cover them up with large letters. We want to entice, not antagonise".
I'm tempted to post this in Gail Simone's forum and enjoy the outrage.
I was actually considering buying this mini series when i first heard of it ..

The most famous example I can think of (but sadly can't find a scan of) is Sensational She-Hulk #40 where while in the captivity of SHIELD, the spy agents actaully make Shulkie jump rope naked. To cover up the boobage, a "THWIP!" from the rope went right straight over her breasts, cheating many of fanboy out of his $1.75 and wank session.

While this isn't quite the same thing with the onomatopoeia, it's still something amusing...

Those scans made me LOL. Marvel's got some real dumbasses working there. There are many ways to cover that stuff up yet they took the stupidest approach.

OK, this just made my laugh more then the Psylocke scans. I now know the reason why Lois will go through with being in all those dangerous stations, so Superman can spank her or should I say teach her a lesson.;) She really is a naughty girl.:p

I went for the shock approach:"OMG how dare someone post crotchshots in Gail's forum. Let's see what it's about" 58 views already, no responses though :).
And no i don't think i've ever been accused of subtlety :p

Yeah, that is some weird censorship. Too bad the art sucks, so its not sexy AT ALL. I wouldn't want to see Sage's hoohahs if my life depended on it.

Thanks for the link from YABS -This comic looks AWESOME!
Surely has potential to rank up there with Watchmen but with added T&A!

I'm a fan of a good number of characters involved in the New Excalibur/Exiles debacle, but I simply can't read it (I tired three early issues of New Ex, & previewed threee Exiles ones when Psylocke came on board...but found them desperately wanting...I suspect future quarter bin appearances at conventions, shows & stores).
This whole approach appears to have lowest common denominator written all over it...looks tactless & the art is reminiscent of Marvel's late 90s installment of the What If?... series (where the art sucked!).

on the recap page, sage's name is listed as unknown. isn't her name tessa? i know she doesn't have a last name yet in comics, but why not list her first name?

Sage reveals in Uncanny X-Men #454 that Sebastian Shaw named her Tessa when she betrayed him & the X-Men; therefore, no, her real name is not Tessa.

I saw the preview pages for Die By The Sword #2 and, and when looking at the character Rouge Mort I came to the following conclusion: Clothed boobs don't work like that. Thank you.

Have you seen latex? Or leather? It looks like the character, although she has a yellow costume.

Me, I'm liking this mini so far. I hope the Fury/Merlyn/Mad Jim Jaspers story leads to something epic. But like so many Claremont stories of late, they start out with epic possibilities and then don't live up to them.

Okay trust! You know this will end bizarely with hardly any explaination and will be a total WTF and Sage will have some huge role in it as to make her well accepted as an Exile and Psylocke will be on the floor in the corner after getting her ass handed to her by like Jasper's jim shorts or something with her kooch in the air.

Wow... just wow.
Do you think the script called specifically for all those crotch-shots? Or did the artist and feel like that it would just add oh-so-much to the story? Either way, absolutely histarical.:p

Dude... there is no way... none, that the editor and writer could have missed that. One I could accept. Two, possibly. But there's like four near misses in the preview art alone. This artist might have a future on Bomb Queen.

Crotch shots aside... did CC create and design the costume Rouge Mort because he hated that someone else thought of the Leper Queen first? But to make sure they're not identical, he gave her Princess Leia's original hair?
I'm convinced that at some point during issue #2, though, Nightcrawler teleports in to place a "BAMF!" over the exposed anatomy-defying breasts of R.M. Just to continue a pattern.

Rouge Mort's hair seems to be coming directly from her mask, but her eyes are definitely set behind it, so I'm stumped.

Pretty close. There is a bizarre story about that which I heard from my Comic Book Guy (it might well be an urban legend, but it sounds so plausible that it still makes my eyes water). I'm not going to discuss it in public, though, so PM if you want to be enlightened/disgusted/horrified/vindicated...

Can you at least hint without our beloved overlord Brian Cronin having to lay the smack down on you? Please? ;) My curiosity is getting the better of me. And if it's something like CC posed in photos nude with foam letters than say "SLAM!" and "BAM!" over his dangly parts, it sure would explain the artistic choices from DBTS #2.

From Comix-Fan:
Hey Chris,
Is John ever going to ask TJ about his BABY?
NachtDear Nacht --
Not on-panel and not anytime soon. That's a wholly private conversation, wholly inappropriate for the current story-line.
Cordially,
Chris Claremont
Dear Nachturne --
Y'see, I've always considered it a private matter that's nobodies d*mn business but the principals involved. As a story point, it's wholly inappropriate for this particular arc. But that's just me and my regrettably 20th century, London/NY sense of what is and is not appropriate between characters and the audience.
Cordially,
Chris Claremont
Keith_Martineau
10-23-2007, 11:26 AM
Whats appropriate between the audience and the characters?
A) They're not real. They don't get to have "private" conversations.
B) The whole point of us reading stories like this, is to witness the lives of fantastical characters. This is like Aunt May and Peter having a conversation about the death of Uncle Ben---but we the readers don't get to see it! Ridiculous.
