The assignment for Round 2 is up on the Blog.

http://cbi.comicbookresources.com/cbi3/round-two/

J. adds some comments on the results of Round 1 and introduces the assignment for Round 2 which is a 3 page "Wonderlost" script by C.B. Cebulski.

C.B. will pick his favorite and will print his pick's work in an upcoming "Wonderlost" TPB

wow...that's awesome... sounds like a pretty cool prize... I have seen Wonderlost on the shelves, but after reading the premise, and now reading the script... I definitely am going to hunt this title down. I grew up and went to the high school at the same time, so I am sure I will catch a lot of the references.

(crap, I'm getting old.)

Also, seeing as there is dialog in this one, are we supposed to put it in or does it matter either way?

polystyleneman
10-18-2007, 04:09 PM
My guess is it is up to how far we want to push the art...

I mean if you're just supplying pencils you wouldn't do dialog but if you're going to put together the whole shebang (inks/colors, etc... as the contestants are allowed - and play at homers have no rules) then I think adding the dialog would make sense.

Anyway, my guess is it's up to you.

Yes, it is up to the finalists if they want to add the text or not. Just as some added Sound FX in the last round.

It can be a double edged sword though since the more you do the more the judges will critique you.

You're making it too easy for them my friend. :D

Not to dissed the fine writers that submitted scripts for this CBI but at least give them a Bendis script to mix it up a little. Love to see what the contestants can do from a script that has been drawn and published just to see how the artists would interprets what the professionals has done.

I just noticed something odd in the script.

Page Three, Panel Five

Widescreen shot of C.B. and the girl from panel five of page one walking down an empty high school hallway holding hands. Lockers and doorways line either side, but there are no other students in the hall besides the two of them walking down the center of it now.

Caption: So while I never shook the cheerleader’s pom-poms or gave the prom queen a night she’ll never forget…

Caption: …I realize now that it’s the action I didn't get in high school that’s always stayed with me.

But there is no girl in panel 5 of page one. Just young C.B.

Page One, Panel Five

Establishing shot of C.B. here now, dressed much like he is on the cover of Wonderlost #1: jeans, t-shirt, sambas, Rossignol cap, and black and yellow JB soccer jacket. He’s on his own, maybe holding a notebook and a text book under one arm, as he walks down a crowded high school hallway lined with lockers.

Caption: I mean, sure, I was your typical, horny high school teen, looking for love in any place I could find it.

Caption: Most often in the pants of any girl who’d let me in.

I wonder if C.B. meant panel six?

Page One, Panel Six

C.B. now standing in the same hallway in front of the lockers with a cute little dark-haired hottie, dressed casually in jeans and sweater and Keds or something similar. She has her back up against the lockers as he leans in and over her and they make goo-goo eyes at each other.

Caption: But now that I’m older, reflecting back on all the different girls I dated…

Caption: …I’ve come to realize that the ones I slept with are the ones I remember the least.

I do not envy the finalists' here, this is one tough assignment. They have to draw Prom Queens, Dead Heads, Field Hockey Uniforms even a 1985 white Honda Accord on 3 six to seven panel pages. CB has made it clear that the details count and there are alot of details! This is going to give the judges anything to Nit-Pick on. To have this all done by Monday at Noon is going to be hard. If the finalists' can get this done then those guys can draw anything. Best of Luck to all of you and I look forward to your works.

A tip: There's some cheerleader pics on CB's High School's home page.

I write all my Wonderlost scripts while listening to music. It's usually always to music from around the time periods the specific stories are set in; music that helps bring the memories back or are key to the stories I'm writing. I choose to do something a little different with the playlist I made for writing "What Matters Most..." for CBI though. I went ahead and included some newer music that captured the mood or feelings of some of the scenes in the panels, so it turned into a pretty eclectic mix if I do say so myself. Here you go...

Jack and Diane - John Cougar Mellencamp
The Gift - Angels & Airwaves
Melt With You - Modern English
Ocean Avenue - Yellowcard
The Flame - Cheap Trick
Screaming Infidelities - Dashboard Confessional
Hold Onto The Nights - Richard Marx
Never Say Goodbye - Bon Jovi

Short story, short list...

The narrator's voice is in the first person, yes, but I was actually referring to how I wrote the panel descriptions. Originally it read:

"This is a small inset panel in the bottom right corner of panel three. It’s a simple shot of me here, smiling or winking at the reader, as I enter the story."

But I changed it to:

"This is a small inset panel in the bottom right corner of panel three. It’s a simple shot of a young C.B. here, smiling or winking at the reader, as he enters the story."

While I'm sure we've taken different roads since graduation, our high school lives were so alike it's terrifying to me. While there were some differences (not the least of which are that I grew up in Indiana and am gay), the music (what, no Cutting Crew or Edie Brickell?), the shoes, the random assortment of stolen/copped alcohol is all way too familiar.

Great script, by the way. I hope the contestants have a blast drawing what is basically (minus the girl lusting) my high school years.

Thanks for posting this, Chris! It really is amazing how similar the high schools lives of so many of us are, even given the obvious differences in our backgrounds, hometowns and sexuality. I've been realizing that so much more after speaking with people who have read Wonderlost.

And while I was never a big Edie Brickell fan, the Cutters' "I've Been In Love Before" is on many of my other playlists!

And, with apologies to all straight male fans of the New Bohemians, I think buying their album was largely a consequence of being gay. lol
