In this thread post the worst comic book covers ever, this is my pick.

That cover makes me want to pick up the book to see what's happening. On that note, it's not a failure.

Something generic and pose-y would be worse, to my mind. Say . . . the five billionth picture of Spider-Man swinging or Superman flying. That cover is kind of fun, by comparison.

Yeah, I haveta agree with E.D.
I find that disembodied heads always make for bad covers:

The 90's were a bad time for comic book covers......
I guess I shoulda looked for a DC comic cover to prove my point :p

I'm sick of the modern posing covers. They are static and lifeless, and inspire only boredom. Silver age artists knew how to really sell a comic, by putting really dramatic situations on the cover, or at least some action.
The example at the start of this thread interests me. The Zebra Batman costume is clearly awful, but it's intriguing and amusing that people are running away from it in terror, and even the streetlamp seems to be bending away from that costume in sheer revulsion. Makes me want to buy the comic and find out what in the heck is going on.

Issue was also a hilarious "Superman is still relevant!" piece, a bit after Authority had lost it's buzz.
And, if im not mistaken, they were both being put out by DC at that point? If im wrong it's less funny.

I'm just going to take this one moment right now to vent a little bit: I've never been a fan of John Romita Jr's artwork. There, I said it. I just don't get why he's a darling with fans and critics alike. I'm not going to argue with anyone and try to convince people while I don't like his work, but still, far from my artist of choice. Even when I see photos of his work that people recommend, something still doesn't click. I don't ask for flashy or modern or gimmicky, just something a bit more streamlined and cleaner. But that's just me.
Okay, got that out of my system. Thank you everyone for allowing that one moment to get that off my chest.
Now, back on topic: I love covers where a group of heroes lay defeated but a lone opponent standing in victory. But that Killer Croc cover ... well, everyone else here said it better than I could.

I agree that is a terrible costume, and the artwork shows a poor grasp of anatomy. I mean, why is Batman wearing bells on his shoulders, and who shrunk his head? And why is his torso covered with odd bumps?
But as a cover, it's really just par for the course in modern times. Standard dramatic pose, no action, no hint of story, no particular reason why I would bother to read this issue.

I'm with you there. JR JR is nothing but a two-bit Kirby wannabe. And Kirby was never my favorite artist, so I'm pretty unimpressed with somebody who would badly imitate him instead of developing their own style. If he had simply imitated his father's wonderfully clean linework, that would have been more understandable.

That's also the alchemical symbol for iron (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alchemical_symbol), making it appropriate for Iron Man. Now that I think of it, doubly appropriate.
Hmm, since the same symbol also represents the planet Mars, all we need is an Amalgam of Iron Man and the Martian Manhunter, so there'll be absolutely no ambiguity!

Now THAT is informative! I wonder, did they do it on other covers of the time. All that I remember was the Spidey head, the black Spidey Head, Barcodes, and Cap (I think it was). Later on they started using the Fantastic Four, I believe for their 30th anniversary.

There has to be an explanation for the floating arm and face. That's gone beyond bad art, and it's just weird.

I'm not seeing it. What's so bad about those covers? Other than Spider-Man having squinty eyes, those don't look too bad. Not great, but definitely not worst cover material. It's a matter of opinion. As for the Spidey cover I find the image hard on the eyes. It is a strange pose, the shadow almost completely covers spidey, spidey has no toes on his right foot, and it looks like an attempt at photorealism produced on a computer that falls flat on its face, but it is only my opinion.
I don't know how one could ever call something "the worst cover ever", as none of us has seen every comic cover.

Its some uber-crappy early Image monstrosity that has a huge Wolverine Head and a midget body. What's not to love about it?
For the record, you win.

I want to blast this cover but it is so funny that I can't possibly do that and must call it the best cover ever!
Agreed. This cover does not belong in this thread.
For the record, you win.For the record, what is the criteria for this? Because it seems to me that a lot of people that are posting on this thread are just posting comic book ideas or stories that they think are silly... which has nothing to do with whether a comic cover is "good" or not.

I remember owning that Troll comic. From what I can remember, it was poking fun at itself a bit. He was some kind of secret agent, I think. It's probably best forgotten.
Orphan, that Strange Adventures cover is brilliant. There's no way that was meant to be taken seriously. That's another one I'd love to have hanging on a wall in my house.

I almost don't want to read the story, because there's no way it could match up with what's in my head.

Oh, my dear, dear friends.
This thread indicates that most of you are unfamiliar with the horror covers published by Myron Fass' Eerie Publications.

Oh c'mon..just relax. We're all having a bit of fun here. A couple of the covers I happen to enjoy. But you have to admit that my Troll posting cover is definitely fugly. I mean the blatant ripoff of Marvel makes the cover so bad, its good.
Sit back and make the comments with the rest of the peanut gallery and loosen up.

Thank Odin there's a relative dearth of Liefeld garbage in this thread. It's a known fact that his covers always blow solid chunks, so let's leave the thread to more unsung contenders.

I like this one.
I missed the boat on Invincible (Image) but have heard good things about it for years. So I saw that my LCS had the whole run in trades so I decided to pick the first one up to see what everyone has been gushing about all this time. The cover to the first trade almost made me put it back down:

This, and everything from that period. Actually, this is not also about the cover, it's also the art and the wrriting.
Huh. Okay, I haven't read Tischman's issues yet but Kordey together with Darko Macan on "Soldier X" was brilliant. I'm pretty happy about my "Soldier X" sketch that Kordey drew for me. :)
He's one of my favorite artists EVER.
Plus it was the one time where Cable was actually interesting and well written (aside from Casey's run). And I loved that new look. Now he's just back to his 90ties crappyness. Meh.
this one looks horrible!
Err no. That looks great. Hembeck is a brilliant artist.
um what the hell is that!?

I sort of like that in an odd way.
He looks like Spider Jerusalem, but with an adorably tiny metal wrist.

I like Darko Macan. I do not like Tischman, at least not on Cable.

I actually think Carey's been using him well in X-Men.

Agreed that it's an excellent cover. Some covers don't belong in this thread
