View Full Version : Let me be honest for a minute.
Matt Algren
10-11-2007, 11:43 AM
So. I'm gay.
I should probably be posting this after I've told people in 'real life' (so nobody stumbles¹ upon the thread à la JerrBear (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=193121)), but I've chickened out twice in the last week, and maybe this'll give me the push I need. Besides, you guys are terribly important to me, and it's one of you who's given me the resolve to finally do this. Unending thanks to him, who I won't name unless he does it first.
Anyway, it's finally time I got honest about being gay. I haven't outright lied about it for a long time, but I haven't exactly been honest, either. This 'don't ask don't tell' thing is not as ingenious, nor as easy, as it sounds. To be honest, I'm fairly certain that most people who've met me know already, and the ones who don't aren't paying very close attention. So it's finally time to make them pay attention. I just want to get it out of the way so it doesn't always feel like I'm hiding or something. There's an elephant in the room, and it's time to address it.
...and now I'm rambling.
I'm still struggling with the religious implications (though reading about David and Jonathan (http://www.pamshouseblend.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=2975) has alleviated a lot of my concerns²), and there are other issues that I won't go into here at stake but I'll figure it out.
Please don't feel like you have to respond here. I'm hesitant to do it this way, only because it looks like a cry for attention, and that's the last thing I want, but I don't know any other way to do it. I just want you folks who talk to me almost daily to know who you're talking to.
Or, as they say, I'm here. I'm queer. I don't want anymore bears.
(Or do I?)
¹ If you aren't from CBR and you know me and are shocked and appalled by what you're reading, call me. We'll talk about it. We'll also talk about snooping online and how not awesome it is.
² Please don't turn this thread into a religious debate. Pretty please. Pretty pretty please.

Matt,
Makes no difference who you sleep with or don't sleep with, you're still a guy I see as very smart and often hilarious. I judge people by the strength of their character, and little else.
But I understand this is a scary, exciting and trepidatious time for you, so rest assured, we're here to support you inasmuch as you need it.
Coming to terms with your own identity is a lifetime process and goes much farther than sexual orientation, race or gender. I'm glad to see you're taking the steps necessary to work on it.
Peace be with you, brother.

Nice one, Matt.
Understand about the religious thing completely. When my brother came out, he had to go into therapy to deal with it. And now he's married to a priest. Then again, maybe you don't want to be married to a priest, so maybe that's not so helpful.
But I know what you're going through. I had a total nervous breakdown just losing my virginity. And I had to read up on scripture thoroughly first before I could allow myself to do that, too.
If it makes you feel better, Jesus didn't care about sex, and the only time it's mentioned in the gospels, it's a clear editorial intervention from later on.

*Point of clarification: we still get to judge, right? I mean, we still have the right to make wise with the cracks if and when Matt posts pics with his sigoth. That's what we're here for.
Seriously, Matt, no worries. I know this was probably a hard decision for you, but no one who is worth anything should have any problems with this. You're you. You're still you. Nothing has changed one iota from before I read this thread until now, IMHO. I just hope that now you feel a little more confidence in yourself, because we're all still your friends, we're all cool with it and we all reserve the right to give you enormous amounts of shit for no reason.

Good for you, Matt. Not because you admitted that you're gay to your internet friends (tell your offline ones too soon), but that you did so while trying to come to grips with your religious convictions. Also, I've never met you so that could be the reason for this, but I didn't see this coming. I guess that's how all of these work though. They're sudden. Maybe you should think of it like that with family and friends who you're unsure about how they'll react. Do it quickly like ripping off a band-aid.
We shan't be getting into my rl preferences, but let me just say that after watching Casino Royale I thanked God for the pause button on my DVD player.

I wish you the best on navigating this religiously as well as with your friends and family. I honestly believe with all my heart that God does not condemn you for your orientation, and I hope you can make peace with it.
I started posting on CBR defending the Boy Scout "don't ask don't tell" policy. I have since come to realize how painful and unhelpful such policies are to good people like you, so now I hate them

hey matt,
I don't know much your religious predilections but i do recommend John Boswell's books. they are really good source material as you consider the overlap of your sexuality and your religion and how they will resolve for you.
i also recommend finding a local chapter of dignity http://www.dignityusa.org/
or integrity http://www.integrityusa.org/ or something similiar. they are great places for gay persons of faith to discuss their issues.

It's a nice bonus, isn't it?
I have no idea what you are talking about. :)
1. Avoiding the "girls have boobs" discussions or commenting on how stupid they are.
2. Avoiding the "I wish I had a girlfriend" discussions.
3. Getting really mad/conflicted during the political and/or religious discussions.
4. An overall reluctance to talk about one's personal life in any depth.
5. Making obtuse comments about not being able to be yourself/not being close to your parents/wishing you could move to another city and start over.
6. A general sense of drama.
Umm Tom you fail at least 2 of these.
That's because you don't know what to look for.
Pink, glitter and John Varvatos suits? Right?
7. Being attracted to men.

Obviously not, but the comfortable part to joke about is still the same as with any heterosexual relationship, the sexuality. I know the guys here with ladies in their lives love 'em dearly (except for Ed, he's just got a dog and a crazy ex; poor Ed- oh, and Ray; poor Ray), but who wants to talk about that? Nobody, that's who! But Mark's wife's boobs? Jeff's swingin'? Those're where the jokes are!

Suddenly I'm reminded of the Roseanne episode where Darlene had her first period, and Dan punched her in the arm and said, "way to go."
Way to go, Matt.
A more perfect response couldn't be written. Go Matt. I will add "SPOON!"

Since this makes at least three people who have missed what I thought was a well known Simpsons reference, let me clear it up. In Simpsons episode 3F20 (Season 7), Much Apu About Nothing (http://www.tv.com/the-simpsons/much-apu-about-nothing/episode/1436/trivia.html), Homer and the citizens are angry at the mayor because of constant (read: one) bear attacks on their front lawns.
Homer leads a march through the streets, the whole crowd cheering "We're here, we're queer, we don't want anymore bears." Hilarity ensues. I've been looking for it on youtube, but it doesn't appear to be there.
Sorry for the confusion.

Why can't you be a hot single woman at the 4th Street saloon in The Village in 1987?
On topic: None of my business, but have you told any close friends or family?

I haven't yet. CBR was the easy one; the rest are a bit tougher. I wish I could just get my whole life in one room and do this once. As it is, there are at least four parts.
Going to try for Tuesday night with the Christian group I act and sing with (there's another little nugget!). Not worried about most of them, but two might have a more ... jarring reaction. And that reaction could (probably won't, but could) spell the end of the group. Hope not, because these five people have seen me through some tough stuff.
I need to make an appointment to talk to my pastor, again hopefully this week. That's a little bit of a logistics problem because the church is 35 minutes away from work. Other than that, I'm optimistic about that one, which is saying a lot coming from me.
Friday night for Mom and Dad. That'll be the toughie. Not only because, you know, their son's gay, but because they're right in the middle of dealing with Grandma's estate with a big auction Saturday. Terrible timing, but the timing will never be right. I need to strike now before we head into holiday season. I refuse to be the one who ruined Thanksgiving.
Telling my siblings will happen next time I see them. They all 'know', it's just a matter of getting it out there.

Good luck, Matt. Though, I think the first people you should tell are your folks, especially if you're telling people they might know before you actually tell them (just assuming that your folks go to the same church as you; if not, probably not a problem). Either way, I hope everyone's as accepting about this as you deserve them to be.
