Please go here for my blog entry for Round 1:

http://cbi.comicbookresources.com/

If you're playing at home, there's a download link for the script of the first assignment there.

It's on, people! It's on!

Nice way to start the competition. It'll be interesting to see how each person handles reference for the car and the helicopter... as well as conveying the action in the script.

Also looking forward to seeing if there is any drop off from their portfolios while working with this deadline.

Good luck guys.

Round 1 leaps right into the action. I'm particularly interested in seeing how people will render water when Aspen is using her powers as well as the explosion of the beachhouse. I might give the Play at Home version a chance .. already sketched the first panel .. sort of.

Good luck with the assignment.

I'm hoping to part-take in the play-at-home thread and I have a question regarding the first round script. Hopefully this is an appropriate place to ask, and maybe someone who's a Fathom fan will know the answer (since I've never read the comic, with the exception of a glance at the preview from way back)...

On page three panel 1, it mentions Aspen returning to her flesh form after having to transfrom into water to esacpe the wreckage. Is there a costume/outfit that she can naturally bring up upon a transition from water to flesh form?

If not, then she's gonna have to fight helicopter in the buff! ;)

escapegoat,

Part of the challenge is doing research on the characters, environments, and props used in the script. If you search around, you will find what you need.

Oh, I know that. So far neither Wikipedia (obviously not the best resource)nor Aspen's main website provides anything to answer my question...that's why I figured I'd post my question here. I won't be able to check my local comic shop before Saturday, and I don't know if they'll have an issue that could give me a quick answer to the question in mind.

I did a simple web search and found a bunch of reference on the way the character looks.

Sorry if my initial question wasn't quite clear. It wasn't a question of what costumes she wears, but rather a question of whether she would appear with clothing or a costume when she does a transformation from "naked" human form --> to water form ---> to human form again.

I know how to google for images too. :p

It was a concern, since page one indicates NO NUDITY quite prominently. However, being an image-stylized comic, I guess it should come to no surprise if she would transform back to a nude form if she was previously nude... ;)

I'd say that there are ways of showing nudity without showing the parts.

Here's an example of the character phasing in and out of water form and flesh form.... and she is nude.

Edit, sorry try this link and scroll down to cover 1c.

The way I read the script is that Aspen is nude and that you have to draw it so that nothing is showing during the panels when she is in human form.

We'll just have to subtly place helicopter blades and debris ..

(tripod.com sucks, it has never worked once for me, all i ever see is the tripod logo)

Oh, I agree. I know how I can lay it out this way, if need be....

The way I read the script is that Aspen is nude and that you have to draw it so that nothing is showing during the panels when she is in human form.
That's how I read it for page one. Page three is a different story since I'm unfamiliar with how her powers work. It just struck me as a little bit odd that opening script of this competition calls for the main character to be running around the buff the whole time. I figured this competition would be designed to be more family-friendly than that. :D

Ditto..I've got nothing coming up here for Dave's link. I'll haveta check it out at home.

Pasting the link in my adres bar doesn't do it for me either. Doesn't it kinda defeat its purpose to have a site for uploading photos if you can't hotlink them? I prefer Photobucket i guess ..

If you right click on the link, copy the link location and paste it into your browser, then the image should show.

EDIT: Looks like the links was switched to the main page.

Thanks, guys! I was wondering about that myself after reading it. Although, the Blog says that questions should be addressed to Mr. Hernandez himself via PM... but, honestly, I don't even know his screen name on this forum. ^^;

That is mainly for the finalist.

Aspen isn't my thing, but I finally got around to checking out the finalists this year and, hot damn, this is easily the most talented group of contestants the contest ever had--I actually want to see these pages just to see what gets done with them.

This year, I'll be following things more closely than usual.

I merged the opening Round post and Comment thread into one to streamline the threads.

There will be a separate Public Comment thread for views and critiques of the finalists' assignments by non judges.

No one ever said this was going to be easy. We warned people many times that if they got to the finals that they would have to do many pages on a short deadline.

The way I see it is people have one day to research and to do roughs/sketches and then do a page a day. I'm not saying that is easy. I'm just saying it seems like a doable schedule.
