View Full Version : Avatar Contest 10-10/10-16

This week's contest deals with the theme of "Once was hot, now it's not".
It can apply to anything that you yourself used to like or thought was cool and now it's really kinda lame or something from the broader culture.

I'm debating my choice. Please jump in!

And now a word from our legal team:

The contest begins on Wednesday (or as soon as the winner can start a new thread) and ends on Tuesday, at which point voting begins, ending when Tuesday ends in all time zones. As a rule, voting before Tuesday is frowned upon, though exceptions are made if you've got a good reason.

Suggesting avatar ideas for others is prohibited. By suggesting, you are basically removing that idea from consideration.

If you want to be eligible to win the "contest" then you must keep your entered avatar for the entire week. Changing your avatar before the week is up will disqualify you, unless you're changing it to something else that fits the contest theme and announce your change in the thread. Putting 'dibs' on a subject lasts for 48 hours, at which time it's free to be taken by somebody else.

Sonic the Hedgehog.

Once he was 'Way Past Cool' in a good way. Now, after several forgettable games.... he's 'way past cool' in a BAD way.

What a pity though.

I was so excited when, as a 16-year old in 1989, Rob Liefeld came onto New Mutants.

That didn't last long and, in retrospect, I don't know what I was thinking.

So we're all going to be sporting horribly out-of-date avatars? It's not like we need help to look uncool.

I'm in with The Moustache.

I think we have a winner right here, folks.

But Taft's 'stache is cool.

Tick: Does your moustache ever ... hurt you?
Taft: Yeah. Sometimes it gets caught on my sweater. In the zipper.
Tick: Yes! Yes! Or when it grabs a lamp and smacks you on the head with it!
Taft: Uh ...

Wait, jean jackets aren't cool?!? When did this happen?

Oh, and I'm in with classical music. Once cool, for the last hundred years or so, not so much. (Unfortunately.)

Bell bottoms were a fashion necessity in the late Seventies, one of the few things the rockers and the disco crowd agreed on. Only nerds and parents wore straight legs. And the wider the flare, the better. I myself wore them all through college, right up to the day the leg of my jeans got caught in my motorized wheelchair's front wheel and I flipped myself out of my chair face first onto the bricks of Red Square in front of several hundred of my fellow students.

Now that's some bell bottom blues!

Only nerds and parents...and the Ramones wore straight legs

A little fix there.
Once I saw the Ramones on a hazy late night broadcast of "Night Flight", I never stopped wearing straight legs.

To those of you under 25 years of age, yes, they were once actually in style.

I thought about voting for Ed, but by the time the 2 Legit 2 Quit album came out, I contend that Hammer was already 2/3 of the way over the shark and had already lost most of his hotness.

Bell bottoms are back. They're just called 'wide leg' jeans now. All the rage again.

Another vote for Dr. Hfuhruhurr. I'm not embarrassed to admit I wore bell bottoms or that I owned three Members Only jackets back in the day but there's a reason no pictures have survived from my mullet phase.

I have to vote for Mac Danny, because I had a Members Only jacket...I had a jeans jacket too, it saved my life once. I actually still have some Members Only shirts...one of which I'm actually wearing right now.

You just aren't hot anymore, Jesse. If you'd put up a picture of yourself, you'd have won unanimously.
