I would start maybe with JSA,JLA & TITANS these 3 titles have just started fresh and not much hunting to do for back issues.

New titles that are starting soon that would be a good thing to pick up would be..
Titans - With Nightwing as one of the stars.
Batman and the Outsiders - Nightwings old team now under Batman.
Green Arrow and Black Canary
Current titles..
Teen Titans
Justice League of America
Justice Society of America
Birds of Prey
Green Lantern Corps.
Green Lantern - For this and the Corps I would wait for a month or two until the current storyline wraps up or get the back issues for the last three months. They are more then worth it.

Both JLA and JSA are good places to start. JSA is the better title but you'll probably be more familiar with the JLA members. JLA is at issue 13 and JSA is at 9.
Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps are both great books and well worth reading. As Quarterwolf points out, they're both in the middle of a major storyline, so it may be worth waiting a month or 2.
Nightwing is about to get a new writer, so it might be worth checking out his first issue and go from there.
you could also check out some trades. Most of the recent titles have trades covering their last few years.

thanks JSA and Titans seem interesting
Green Lantern:
Pick up the trade paper back for rebirth and then read any of the trades for Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps. Both books a pretty good and they are currently part of the best comic book arc the Sinestro Corps.
Teen Titans:
Yea it's on chapter fifty-something but if you are really strapped for cash you can pick start up on the one year later arc. Thats where I started and from there I ended up reading the previous issues. It's a bit in medias rey but it's a decent jump on point.
Batman:
Detective Comics.
Yea yea it's on it's eight hundred something issue but pick up this trade
http://dccomics.com/graphic_novels/?gn=6926
and continue on. Dini writes a very good batman. Really no backstory is needed.
Superman:
All Star Superman. Short out of continuity bi monthly comic that is great. Plus when you talk about it you get to use the abbreviation ASS.
Justice Society:
Only a few issues out right now. Eventually you might like to collect the previous series.
Justice League:
Same as JSA only it isn't quite as good. The current creative team on the book is much better so far. Start up with the Black Canary wedding special and then jump on from there.
Checkmate: It's another short book and I'd argue one of the best things put out by DC.
The Spirit: Same as above but the main writer(Darwyne Cooke) is leaving so the book may decline in quality or maybe not. As of now though it's a definite must buy.
Brave and the bold: Another great book. This one features different team ups. Well written and only about 6 issues in makes it really accessible.
Metal Men: Fun book and I personally like it but it is pretty light hearted so you may want to just check it out first.
52: 4 trade paperbacks. It's a good fairly self contained story that sets the tone to the current DCAU but it can get expensive to collect the whole thing.
Booster Gold: About to hit issue three. Good book but full of time travel and stuff.

First let me say good luck. DC isn't a newbie friendly environment at the moment with all the Countdown bullcrap. If you like horror comics maybe you may want to give Simon Dark a try. First issue comes out next week and it's Countdown free. Makes for the perfect jumping point.

after reading GL: Rebirth (Jordan's comeback) and the GLC TPB's, read the SInestro Corps War story arc. you'll love it!
here's a link of my SCW comic trailer: http://youtube.com/watch?v=XR_9Rx_KWvs
enjoy!

I agree with those suggesting Green Lantern. Green Lantern: Rebirth is a pretty solid Green Lantern primer, even if you know nothing about GL, and it shifts you right into the current series. I think they're around issue #25 now, so you'll have a bit of catch-up to do, but I'd say it's worth it.
