I'm new here and I wanted to share my hobby with the crew here and get your opinions. I've been actively taking photos for about a year now after a 15 year hiatus. My favorite subject has been Hellboy.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on my work. The whole collection of Hellboy images can be found HERE (http://www.flickr.com/photos/asylum_collectibles/sets/72157600335667645/)

I really like the first picture, the lighting is really nice. I have to say that after seeing the second picture I went to look at my Hellboy because yours has quite a heavy wash.Still nice though!

No wash. That's all shadow. Here he is in a less moody picture.

Yes, the first one is very well done.
Any chance you could take a picture of your light setups as used with future pictures...
This could make for a great learning experience for those of us just getting into photography.

OK!
This image was manipulated in Photoshop. I duplicated the layer, added a cutout filter to that layer, set the transparency to 50% and re-merged the layers. What I got was what you see here. I really like how this turned out.

No way! I never would have guessed that you were using two candles as your light source. It works great!
Greg The Bunny
10-07-2007, 10:03 AM
As long as you have a camera that you can control f-stop and shutter speed the candles work fantastic and give the light needed to recreate Mignola's extra-dark style. I kinda stumbled onto the idea and now I'm hooked.

I managed to get the "Deluxe" trenchcoat Hellboy as well as the "Angry" and "Snarling" faced Hellboys 50% off from the Mezco toyz warehouse sale.
Deluxe he is! Unlike the mass market versions he's fully painted from head to toe. His torso joint is very flexible and is just 'nicer'. He'll be my new 'hero' figure for taking pictures. I've already modified him to accept the other heads by pulling off the existing head and widening the neck hole and trimming down the ball a bit so they can easily be swapped out but not be floppy.
I think I'm ready to start trying to reproduce some frames of the comics. I've downloaded all the Hellboy comics as jpgs so I can pull the backgrounds out and photoshop them in to my images as needed.
So, I guess if I get inspired this weekend I could have some cool stuff to share.

10-26-2007, 06:06 AM
Wow, I would love to see you do a panel page like this!!!
I am very interested to see if you can pull off the panel transititions that Mike is famous for. The way he uses shapes and strong diagonals to pull your eye from one panel to the next. And the way that he uses massy shapes to speed up the action or lots of detail to slow it down...
I know that you are really enjoying the color, but you might want to study a page that you can see in both black and white and in color. That would let you "see" how color was added to emphasis the shapes and lines of Mike's work.
Do a search of "Mignola hellboy" on this site (top right corner of the site) and you will find hundreds of black and white images of Hellboy...
http://www.comicartfans.com/
I can't wait!
Greg The Bunny
10-26-2007, 06:27 AM
I didn't even know the battle-damaged version existed and now they're out of stock.
Are there any more that I should know about?
Definitely going to check out those images.
My plan is to set the lighting the best I can to mimic Mignola's style and make any adjustments in Photoshop as necessary. It will probably take me most of a day just to reproduce a single page.

"Batman and Son" Batman figure. New today.
I call this "Batman finds the gunrunner's warehouse"
Every once in a while I make something that impresses me. This is one of those times. I adjusted the white balance to that LED flashlight of mine and instead of that crazy blue light, I got this.
To get this image I set the exposure for a fairly long time and wave the light like a crazy person, 'painting' the scene with light. A little post work and this is what we have.
The guns and stuff are from my parts bin.

Absolutely. Eventually I plan to do a whole comic with the Hellboy figures. I'm putting together the 1/12th scale props and sets and will probably start in earnest after the first of the year. My project now is taking that Doctor Who TARDIS playset and making it more screen accurate.

This is probably my favorite of the group shots. Mostly because we can't see Liz about to barf. Man...the low-lighting does not do that figure's face any good. Not your fault. She's painted like a tweaker.
Great photos! Keep 'em comin'..

I think it's the eye sculpt. She's half-asleep and it looks WEIRD.

A little something different.
This is my first fully planned and built set. The fireplace is a dollhouse piece. Strangely enough, dollhouse scale is 1/12 scale. Same as most action figures these days.

Nice! I wonder what it would look like if the fireplace were the light source?

That's on my list of things that need to be done to complete this set.

Do you just light with candles, and other lights and not use the cameera's flash?? I find the only way my camera, nikon coolpix, does good on small objects is outside, indoors the flash goofs up the colors.

These recent shots are all lit with candles. I've only used my flash in the studio maybe 5 times. Everything is manual on my camera so I can turn off the flash, set the exposure time all the way to 15 seconds, adjust the ISO, white balance and f/stop and get exactly what I want out of the image.
The GOOD news is that the camera that I use continues to go down in price and you can usually score a Canon A640 for under $300. And a friend of mine and I were shooting outdoors yesterday and she has the Canon Rebel XTi and my shots came out better than hers with her $1300 camera.
your stuff get better and better...i like it alot!!!:D :D :D

More goodness! That one with the Abe, Liz, Johann, and Hellboy is one of my favorites from you. Badass zombie, too. I wish his hand wasn't cropped in that first one, though--at first I read it as a bizarre second elbow haha.
Now that I have a little practice with my digital SLR I might have to take some bitchin' pictures of toys, too.

Wow. He makes me look like a five year old with a Polaroid.
Thanks! Now I have a new bar to shoot for.

His work is quite different than yours so I wouldn't worry too much about comparisons. He is often placing his toys in the context of the large and "real" world. Your pieces are very atmospheric and intimate and you are really on to something with your approach to lighting and use of props.

A lot of his stuff can be translated to what I'm doing. I'm glad you pointed him out to me as I want to learn what he's doing so I can incorporate it into my stuff.

The caption is:
Spidey: NOW do you believe me when I say you can't learn how to fly a helicopter like they did in The Matrix?
Wolverine: Yes.
