Press Release

Marc Silvestri to judge Comic Book Idol, drawing a Witchblade cover on the line
Trip to New York, assignments from IDW and Oni included in prizes

Marc Silvestri, legendary comic book artist and CEO of Top Cow Productions, will serve as a judge for Comic Book Idol 3 (http://www.comicbookidol.tv), hosted by Comic Book Resources (http://www.comicbookresources.com). The winner of this year’s competition will have the honor of drawing a cover for the mega-popular Witchblade series, along with an all-expense paid trip to the New York City Comicon, an assignment from Oni Press, an assignment with IDW Publishing, networking opportunities and the chance to have their art seen by countless fans and professionals.

Comic Book Idol 3 began with over 180 amateur comic book artists entering the fray, and the selection process has narrowed it down to the 10 best. These 10 are now challenged to battle it out using their art as their weapon, with only the most talented artist, as determined by the fans, still standing when the smoke clears the air. That person will be crowned the Comic Book Idol.

While the fans will be doing the judging, the competitors will have the advantage of having their work evaluated weekly by a panel of experts. Included in that panel along with Silvestri are Chris Ryall, publisher/editor-in-chief of IDW publishing, and James Lucas Jones, editor-in-chief of Oni Press, along with more guest judges to be announced.

“The potential this year is amazing. As a whole, the entries this year displayed a higher skill set than we’ve ever seen before, and this final group of ten is outstanding,” Jonah Weiland, executive producer of CBR, said. “Numerous stars will be born out of the contest this year, no doubt, but in the end only one will be the next Comic Book Idol. I can’t wait to see which one of the 10 steps up!”

“This can lead to some big things for the winner, as we’ve seen with Patrick Scherberger who is now working regularly for Marvel and Carlos Rodriguez who’s drawn some pretty high profile projects for Image,” J. Torres, comic book writer and host of Comic Book Idol 3 said. “But just being in the competition has helped a number of artists launch their careers like Micah Gunnell, Jonathan Hickman, Joe Infurnari, Billy Penn, Jason Masters… I could go on!”

The winner of Comic Book Idol 3 will be named Nov. 15th.

You think Marc Silvestri's going to parooze the play at home? I guess it's possible...
Not that there aren't plenty of other reasons to do it.

W.Blankenship, I feel your pain. :(

don't care if he does or if he doesn't.

The point is the doing, not the judging.

I think the point is to prove that you could have contended. At least that's how I'll be playing. I won't call off from work though.

What are you, Yoda or something?

I'd love to do the play at home, but there's other things on the plate right now that are more urgent.

LOL.

Far from Yoda. But I never thought I'd be in the top 10 in the first place. I like the contest because i get to see all of your work and doing the challenges forces me to step my own [small] skillset up another level or two.

As an employee of Top Cow, I'd say...yeah, probably. I certainly can't guarantee it, but it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest, cuz Marc's cool like that.

And if he does, you'd be crazy to miss the opportunity, because he's one of the best in the business at finding new talent. I mean, I'm sure you're well aware of some of the amazing artists that Marc has discovered and personally trained, and the before and after is really quite shocking. He can see the potential in a submission most people would dismiss without a thought. To quote our esteemed Managing Editor, "Some people have an eye for talent; Marc's got two."

So do the "play at home" and make it good, because there's a chance he might see something in you.

youre not chosen?

Sadly no, but I share your shock and disbelief. ;)

Heh, actually the guys they picked have all got serious skills. And to be fair, so do a bunch of people who didn't make it. It was a really great showing by a whole lot of people. That's what keeps things interesting. :)

Geez... and here I'd been planning to shed a few tears and get back to work on my own projects. Thanks a bunch for the heads up shwa96. Guarantee or no, that does shift the balance of what will best serve my comic drawing aspirations.

You know, Marc drew the first comic I ever read. It's that one with Wolverine turning into the Brood on the cover. I still have it.

My first comic was Wolverine 45, sadly I don't have it, but Marc got me into comics. I hope he checks out the play at home thread.
