New month - new thread! So far I've read:
ASTRO CITY THE DARK AGE BOOK TWO #4 - I like this book still, but it would read better in trades.
ANNIHILATION CONQUEST STAR LORD #3 - So damn cool.
AVENGERS INITIATIVE #6 - Didn't see that coming, but liked it!
CABLE DEADPOOL #45 - Bob kills me...
CAPTAIN AMERICA CHOSEN #2 - Weird, but ok...
FRANKLIN RICHARDS MONSTER MASH - HA! And my friend was psyched to get it for his kid.
IRON MAN #22 - Was the ending of this one a bit weird to you too?
MARVEL ZOMBIES BOOK ANGELS DEMONS & MONSTROSITIES - Just looked through it, but WOW!
SUB-MARINER #4 - GOOD STUFF!!! This is falling under some people's radar but is really good.

World War Hulk # 4 ( it comes out late here ) : What more can be said about this series? It just keeps getting better and better in my book. The fight scenes by John Romita JR are awesome..You can literally feel the weapons clang against each other and the sheer fury of the battle in the gladiator fight between Black Bolt/Strange and Tony/Reed. Like this book, Greg Pak is a force to be reckoned with.
Se7en # 6 : The best issue yet as we dive deeper in to the psyche of John Doe : his brutal motivations, his twisted sense of perfection and his methods.
David Mack carved out a masterpiece on this book and it fills quite a lot of holes in the movie itself. I can't wait for # 7 to come out and then re-read the whole thing again while watching the movie ( have to buy the DVD first, though ).
Sgt. Rock : Between a Rock and a Hard Place HC : It's not bad but it didn't strike me as i hoped..surprising, since Azarello wrote it ( then again, he did write Superman : For Tomorrow ). A funny thing i noticed about Joe Kubert's art..Done in the modern days, with better colors and paper quality, it bears quite a resemblance to the art of his kids ( Perhaps Andy and Adam copied his father too much )...unlike John Romita and John Romita Jr. ( a father-son team with extremely different styles and techniques but equally loved by me ) and John and Sal Buscema ( ditto ).

Ultimate Spider-Man #114--OK, even if I didn't already know who the Marvel Universe version of Miles Warren is, *my* Spider-Sense would have been going off. :p Creeeepy. But is he really going to be trouble or is Bendis just effing with us? Hmmm.... Oh, the Bagley sadness is gone, and I am loving Immonen.
Boneyard #25--Very funny, as always. Any issue that has a Boris and Leon conversation becomes a favorite of mine.
Boneyard #26--Abbey kicks ass!!! Richard Moore does great action.
Criminal #6-8--Re-read just because I felt like it. How many series can we say that about these days.
Criminal #9--I feel so lazy just saying that I loved this, but I do.

Read the new Wolverine Annual and the latest Uncanny X-Men yesterday.
Wolvie was fantastic! A all in 1 story with beautiful art by Frusin. If you don't buy it, at least give it a flip test. Uncanny was cool too. Great ending and I can't wait to see where this one goes!

BORROWED TIME - Oni Press
I think I mentioned this in one of the other "what I read..." threads, but this article at comicon.com was interesting. I picked this up at the NYCC back in February and loved it. Not science fiction-y, but just enough that you get the sense of a bigger picture at work adding to the drama.

Finder vol. 1: Sin-Eater part 1 TP
Finder vol. 2: Sin-Eater part 2 TP--The circumstances would take too long to describe, but these have been sitting on our shelves for a while. I am now highly annoyed with myself for not following up sooner. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Very inventive world, great characters, and nice art. I was irritated with one thing: the annotations are very informative and fascinating, BUT there are segments of the actual story where I would have been lost without them. I highly recommend this series.
Iron Man: Hypervelocity TP--Very good.IF you've read Warren's Gen 13, Fantastic Four, and Livewires, then you know what to expect. Lotta tech, lotta action. Denham's art did not win me over though. I'd have a hard time articulating why, but it never quite"clicked" for me. It wasn't like it made the trade unreadable or anything, but I'm not going to get excited if I see Denham's name on something in the future. Also recommended, but to people who enjoy techno-speak in their fight scenes. :p
Justice Society Of America Vol. 1: The Next Age HC--Really good. Better than I expected. No surprise, I loved Eaglesham's pencils, but the story wasn't bad. IMO, Johns should pare down the cast, or I'm going to lose interest again, but a very solid restart.

I just read this and loved it. Not as much as Livewires - but a lot more then I expected. The plot is very cool and very very fun.
But the art - while good - did seem wrong. I wish Warren drew it himself. (or had Rick Mays work with him again) - the storyboards in the back by Adam Warren were fantastic. Denham followed them, but something about Warren's Manga style just fits his writing perfectly - more specifically his dialogue.
I want more Tony 2.0!!

Well, my team was getting stomped in Knoxville yesterday so I turned off the TV at half-time and decided that it was time to put a dent into my reading pile:
Star Wars: Legacy #16 - Jan Duursema's art for this arc has been top notch. Still can't quite figure out why there are random panels throughout each issue that look as if they have been colored directly from pencils when the rest of the book has been inked.
The Umbrella Academy #1 - Ba's art colored by Dave Stewart is really nice. Quirky little story that I'll probably continue to read in trade. Interested to know why there are different numbers of characters on each side of the Eiffel Tower on the cover.
Birds of Prey #110 - What happened to the killing of the Secret Six character storyline from the previous issue? Nice character interaction between Oracle and Huntress.
Catwoman #71 - Looks like another baby story arc is getting ready to disappear due to the giant reset button that is probably going to be pushed next issue.
Tales of the Sinestro Corps: Parallax - Complete waste of my time and money. Do I even bother with the other money grabs for this crossover from DC?
Wonder Woman Annual #1 - I may have cared about this ending 8~12 months ago or whenever this arc was supposed to be completed. Did the ending of #4 even segue into this issue very well? I can't remember WW fighting 45 different villains at the end of that issue. Simone & the Dodsons have some serious damage control ahead of them.
Jungle Girl #0 - Definitely worth every penny (I think 12 of them through the online discount) that I paid for this book.
Astounding Wolf-Man #2 - Some odd use of neon pink & green for the night fight scenes. Otherwise, enough mystery and intrigue to keep me coming back for more!
Brit #2 - Another fun issue. Loved the introduction of Brit's sister. Sure hope that this is able to keep up the monthly schedule.
Dynamo 5 #7 - Satisfying conclusion to the first big arc. Some nice action sequences from Asrar. Can't wait to read again when the dirt cheap trade ships soon.
Madam Mirage #2 - Pre-ordered up through the next issue but I think that I am done. Not entirely what I expected. The art is nice but would look a ton better if inked before colored.
Savage Dragon #132 - I've been reading this book since the beginning and I can't believe that I'm about the type this - I think that Larsen's art is starting to look dated. The designs of the new characters are a bit bland (Kirby influence?), the level of detail has gone way down (there are a couple of panels in this book that didn't look good at all) and I'm pretty sure that my loyalty is going to be tested in the coming months. Is it time for the book to end? The lettering from John Workman was a nice change of pace. Could have done without the Rock House Diner as well.
Captain America #30 - The pregnancy angle feels a bit soap-opery (is that even a word?) for this book, but outside of the House of M tie-in has there been a bad issue in this run yet?
Irredeemable Ant-Man #12 - Did Kirkman try to make him redeemable in the end? Knowing that Eric O'Grady is moving over the The Initiative means that I may need to continue reading that book.
Ms. Marvel #19 - Machine Man with a bushy mustache = comedy gold in my book!
The Order #3 - Loving this book! The art from Barry Kitson is a nice change of pace for a Marvel book.
Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four #1 2 3 4 - Bought while grieving after 'Ringo's untimely passing. A fun little mini series.
World War Hulk #4 - Slowly losing interest - luckily, there is only one more issue.
Wasteland #12 - Another good one. The last two issues has reignited my interest in this book.

Looking at that list, I think that is close to the number of books on my monthly reading list (but don't quote me on that). In all fairness, I'm not sure how I manage to keep up with all of the books. I do read each one twice before throwing them in a long box. The first time is a quick read to get over the excitement of a new issue and the second go round is use to soak in and process all that is going on in that issue.

I got that Jungle Girl issue #0 for free, and it wasn't bad. Maybe a tpb, but we'll see.
I just finished reading the WHITE TIGER TPB and it was just ok. Lots of exposition and there was something about the art that was off a bit. The story was good but it did seem to end abruptly. Eh... it was just ok. I do like the character though!
I also read the IRON MAN: HYPERVELOCITY TPB and liked it! A lot more that I thought I would too! It was funny, action packed, and kept you thinking the whole time.
Now I've got the KILLER HC to read next, depending on what's in the box today! :)

That's guaranteed to be a good read. Is the HC oversized? I've been getting the single issues and would think about re-investing in this series if there ends up being a HC that contains all 10 (or 12?) issues once the whole series has shipped.

During lunch today, I re-read DMZ Vol. 1 (in anticipation of getting to Vol. 3 later this week) and the Groo: 25th Anniversary Special during which much giggling did take place. It's good to have the dimwitted barbarian back! Reading the Minstrel's tale & Groo alphabet out loud to myself was the highlight of the hour.

Birds of Prey (Simone) v4: The Battle Within - More good stuff. The art was pretty mediocre. Erm... not much more to say than that.
The Quitter - I enjoyed this. It's nice to have a longer work from Pekar rather than the short snippets he normally does.
Queen & Country Declassified v1 - Another good volume of Queen and Country - but I really wish Oni Press would stop doing these three issue trades. They cost so much more per issue to buy. The introduction was by Micah Wright. I wonder how much of that I can beleive...

For those of you reading DMZ, can someone answer this question for me:
Why does Matt Roth have that bandage over his nose? The first time that I read the first 2 volumes, I thought that it showed up after he was initially kidnapped by the FSA. But looking back at the issues, it shows up sometime between issues #2 & #3 with no explanation as to the cause of the injury. Did I miss something in the narrative or will this never get explained?

KILLER HC Vol. 1 - WoW! This was great! The art was awesome, and even changed up the styles a bit here and there. It certainly "feels" like a European GN, but the pacing is excellent.
I'd equate the story to the movie THE PROFESSIONAL, but with more issues instead of a little girl, AND with more backstory. It's funny how your questions are answered as they appear in your mind. I know it will be a while, but I'm eagerly awaiting the next volume!

First, comes the best.
Finder vol. 4: Talisman TP--If you love to read, this is highly recommended. If you love to write, this is required reading. If you haven't read the previous volumes, don't worry about it. This could almost be a self-contained OGN of its own. This volume steps away from the main character, Jaeger, and focuses on the supporting character, Marcie. It follows Marcie as she desperately tries to find her most cherished possession, the children's book Jaeger used to read to her, and her struggles with trying to capture the vivid fantasy world of her imagination onto paper.
If you have ever had a favorite book, or a book you've lost, or a story that you can't get out of your head, then you need to read this.
Now, the rest.
Finder vol. 3: King of the Cats TP--I was nervous about this one. I absolutely loved vol. 1 & 2, no question. But this volume features a major shift in scenery, as Jaeger can't ever stay in one place for too long, and sometimes a scenery shift is enough to disrupt what you might like about a book/series. As always, I worried over nothing. More imaginative brilliance. I also developed a nice rythym in reading the story and the annotations together. My only nitpick: I love Disney World, so her parody of it got to be a bit wearying. Highly recommend.
Outer Orbit TP--Thought the description in Previews sounded amusing, so I ordered it. Good call, Eric! I laughed all night long. Very, very funny in a puerile and juvenile way. :D
American Born Chinese--I was actually disappointed with this one. IMO, the ending ruined what would have otherwise been another good (if personally unrealatable) biographical comic. I'm glad I read this. I'm gladder* that I borrowed it from the library and didn't pay for it.
*Yes, "gladder" is funny sounding word, but I wanted symmetry with the previous sentence and "happy" was just too strong an emotion.

New Avengers #35 - I liked the all villain issue even though I didn't quite know who half the folks were in the room with the Hood.
Star Wars: Dark Times #5 - Well, that kidnapping plotline sure did take a depressing and unexpected twist, eh?
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #24 - Still feel like I'm getting ripped off - don't need all of the extras. Not particularly liking where this story is heading.
Green Lantern Corps #16 - Good issue. Still don't care for most of the no name Lanterns in this book.
Tales of the Sinestro Corps: Cyborg Superman - Filler mostly. Not essential to reading this storyline. Dang the completist in me!
Green Lantern #24 - Best issue of the Corps War! Loves me some Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner & John Stewart!

Read WALKING DEAD Vol. 7 - man... this is still so cool. Every issue / tpb ends at a point that just KILLS you! Every time I read this, I end up not standing up until the whole tpb is over. Even if I have to go to the bathroom - I just wait! :)
GHOST RIDER: TRAIL OF TEARS HC - Was ok. I liked Clayton Crain's art, and the story wasn't bad. Pretty brutal too - which I was hoping and expecting.
New Avengers #35 was damn cool! I love villian issues! ;)
Runaways #28(?) was ok. I'm just done with this arc. Bring on the next team.
Wolvie was cool. Mark G. seems to know how to write a good Wolvie story!

Got through my stack yesterday, and was largely underwhelmed by last weeks books, except for Green Lantern #24 which officially turns the tide in the war. I love how they've structured the story like a great old war movie. Can't wait to see how this ends.
I also picked up Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew: The Final Ark #1. Comedy being the most subjective thing in the universe, I won't say it's bad, I'll just say it's not for me. The art is great, really a cartoon spaced out on the page, and I'm sure for old fans it a warm blanket on a cold day. Not my thing though.

Me too. I think that my dislike of the story was in that there was a lot of focus on GLs that I don't really care about in the beginning. Throw in Kilowagg with Hal, John, Guy & Kyle and I'm not sure that you really need any other characters in the Corps. What do you think? I'm not a long time GL reader but are there any worthwhile female members?

See, I'm a pretty recent reader of GL as well, so I don't really know. The girl from Sinestro's home planet has kind of an interesting story, but beyond that, I'm at a loss. But yeah, the humans are the most interesting characters, but that's kind of by design.

for me:
Mighty Love - This was better than I'd heard. The story was very silly and two-dimensional but it was a lot of fun and I've always liked Chaykin's art.
The Flash #232 - I'm really not liking this new incarnation of the book. The art has nice touches, but the anatomy's all over the place and the overall effect is a bit of a mess. Waid's story just isn't grabbing me. The pacing seems off and I'm not finding anything to care about.
Sea of Red v1: No Grave But the Sea - This was okay. The art was uneven, but I do like the dark red/brown colouring. Some of the panels were terrible - others were fine. The story is just barely good enough to keep me interested. But undead pirates? Again? At least this was better than that other undead pirates book, the similarly titled Red Seas.
The Long Haul - Quite a fun wild west heist story. Anthony Johnston has a knack for writing stories that hover somewhere between mediocre and good. Never bad enough to put me off his work, but never good enough to make me more interested in his stuff. Eduardo Barreto is on fine form here though.
Batman: War Crimes - Meh. I actually enjoyed War Games (though I know lots of people didn't) but this was too bitty to really engage me. How I feel about this in the long term will depend on whether they leave it so that Leslie let Spoiler die on purpose (which is really out of character) or whether they actually had her fake Spoiler's death (which wouldn't be out of character). The thing is though if they did have here fake it, she'd have had to fake the clues that point to her having done it, and there's no reason why she'd have wanted to do that
Museum of Terror v1: Tomie 1 - Some decent horror stories from Junji Ito, all revolving around a girl who seems to inspire people to murder her, but always comes back. I enjoyed this, but this was 400 pages and there's another 400 page volume based on the same character. I'm curious to see how Ito's going to keep my attention through the next book.

I re-read this on Tuesday night too! I've previously only read the early printings and this time they are right -> left and are in a slightly different order. I have the other 2 volumes and I think I'll be reading them over the next week. There are supposed to be a few new stories that I haven't gotten to in those vol's, and it's not ALL Tomie stories either. Some of those other ones are great. I think there's one called "Hair" that I remember really liking that I can't wait to get to.

• FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #24 - Art is unreal. Not a bad story either, just not SHOCKING.
• HEROES FOR HIRE #14 - Still WWH, but not bad!
• NEW WARRIORS #5 - Eh.. it's ok.
• NOVA #7 - This is cool...
• PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL #12 - DAMN COOL!!!
• WORLD WAR HULK FRONT LINE #5 - Really liked this one. Don't let teh cover fool you
• X-FACTOR #24 - Ending happened too quick. I bet PAD is a victim of the upcoming x-over.. again...
• X-MEN DIE BY THE SWORD #1 - Eh...
• BLACK SUMMER WRAP CVR #3 - NEATO! :D

Catwoman #72 - Really good issue. The baby was written out with some excellent art from the Lopez boys.
Mighty Avengers #5 - It all starts to come together with this issue. Thought balloons aren't as intrusive as the first couple of issues. Still, there should be no reason why this issue should be so late! The series start was delayed 3~4 months because of Civil War!

Historically really. I was buying Supergirl, JLA, JSA and The Flash, but I got bored of JSA, JLA went crap (when Joe Kelly was writing it) and Supergirl got cancelled. These days I just like to keep one foot in the whole monthly comic thing, even though it costs me nearly twice as much to buy it this way.
The Flash is the only comic I buy monthly now.
Are you reading Johnston & Mitten's WASTELAND yet? It's good stuff that takes a little while to get started but I've been enjoying it more and more in recent months.
Nope - In fact I haven't even heard of it - but Johnston's strictly an "only if I see it cheap on eBay" writer for me so it could be years before I do try it.

I'm very happy with my latest batch of stuff.
Powers vol. 9: Psychotic TP--Re-read to refresh my memory. Enjoyed it even more the second time around.
Powers vol. 10: Cosmic TP--Wow. I mean, "Good Wow". In the early days, I was on the fence with this series, but the last four trades have changed that.
Justice vol. 1-3 HC--I thought this was pretty good. Like a really awesome episode of the Super-Friends.
Dynamo 5: Post-Nuclear Family TP--This was really good! Nice character work and I loved the pencils. I might end up liking this more than Noble Causes, even.
Spider-Man/Fantastic Four: Silver Rage TP--Fun. Good ol' fashioned, only as Marvel can do it, F-U-N. Thank you, Jeff Parker, for showing Ben get one over on Johnny. I just wished the 'Ringo tribute page had been in this one.
Superman #668--Good. Not the best I've seen from either Busiek or Leonardi, but still good. But who the hell is Chris??? This is what I get for skipping the Donnor/Johns/Kubert trainwreck, huh?
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #24--God, I really do love Quesada's pencils. Unfortunately, that is all the good I have to say about this issue. What really bummed me out was that the issue that this one ties into was from when I was absolutely loving JMS's run. Salted the wound.

I was all about the catch up yesterday. Wasteland 11 and 12 were great, with lots of action, really got the series back on track for me.
Maintenance #5 was the funniest issue of the run so far, and if they can do more issues like this, I'll definetly be on the series for a while.
Bought Scalped Vol 1: Indian Country over the weekend. Not bad, although I can't say I loved the art. The story is fairly decent though and there's some good mystery.
Also got The Exterminators vol 3 which has some hit or miss art with the hit being Tony Moore and the miss being anyone else. But the story is good and continues the big story of the series and there's lots of creepy bug moments. Not bad but not great.
Finally, read Faker 3 and 4 which really helped to explain what was going on in the series and made me look forward to the rest of the issues. It's a decent sci-fi story and these two issues changed the characters from no ones that I could barely keep straight to well defined personalities. I'll recommend the trade when it comes out as it will read better all at once.
Oh it felt good to get so much stuff off the stack.

Just read Grimm's Fairy Tales Vol. 2. The art was hit or miss, but the collection of covers is worth it alone. The stories are grat too, and slowly you are learing about "Sela," the mysterious woman who shares the stories that somehow come true. Fun stuff! ;)

Empowered vol. 2 TP--Loved it even more than the first. The Demonwolf is still my favorite character and the bit with Ninjette losing to the bane of all videogamers, had me calling both my brothers after ten minutes of all-too-true laughter. If you liked the first volume, then you'll love this one.

Ultimate Spider-Man #115 - another excellent issue. The splash page with Spidey swinging through the city with the SHIELD shock troops behind him was awesome colored.
The Walking Dead #43 - I liked the flashback issue. Loved the scenes with the Governor manipulating the people and the Ewww cringe worthy splash. Is it me or is the Governor starting to look like Major Bludd from GI Joe? Add a couple of items (i.e. helmet and metal arm) to his wardrobe and you've got a separated at birth situation! :D

Velocity Pilot Season #1 - Beautiful art from Kevin Maguire with a decent one off speedster story from Joe Casey. Thought it was nice that the creative team paid respect to Mike Baron & Butch Guice in the credits.
The Flash #233 - Hmm, not sure that I liked the art from Freddie E Williams II. I know that he probably turned the issue around in 2~3 weeks but it was a bit too cartoony (and brightly colored) for my tastes. I'll give him a couple of more issues and then make a final decision on this book. After complaining about Acuna's art, why do I find myself wishing he was still on it?
Gotham Underground #1 - Interesting issue. May end up reading a couple of more issues.

I was giggling to myself reading through these pages while at the same time getting strange looks from my wife.

Have you ever been so excited for a book or movie, you don't end up judging it (objectively) as you read/watch it? That you love it and love it and love it and then suddenly a week later, the excitement wears off and you find yourself realizing that it didn't meet your expectations? And then you are confused and can't understand why you didn't like it. Then, you wonder was it just that my expectrations were too high, or was it really just not good? The reason I bring this up:
Shazam the Monster Society of Evil HC--I didn't like it. I can't believe that I didn't like it. Bone is one of my all-time favorite series. I've been eager for this ever since it was announced two years ago. Who knows? Maybe a year from now I'll re-read it and fall in love with it, but right now I'm feeling like I wasted my time and money. :(

Star Wars: Dark Times #6 - Not nearly as good as the previous 5 issues...art-wise at least. May be a book that gets shuffled off into the wait for trade category.
Fear Agent: The Last Goodbye #4 - Excellent ending. I guess we now know why Heath Huston is the last of the Fear Agents? Does Dark Horse do oversized Hardcovers? I'd still be willing to plunk down money for one of those if produced.

Read the Dynamo 5 tpb on Friday - I paid only $5 for it but will gladly plnk down whatever Image wants for vol 2. Good fun and interesting stuff! Kinda like Invincible with more lead characters.
I also read POWERS: Cosmic, Vol #11 - I liked it, but didn't love it. These issues all move so quickly. I like where the characters are now, but it ahd been a while since I read the previous issues. I'll have to do some re-reading next time a new vol comes out... in another year.

Last day of October so I figured I'd read the books that I got today:
Savage Dragon #133 - Better issue this time around. Although I am a little confused that the ending/cliffhanger from #132 wasn't followed up on - I thought that Dragon discovered something surprising with the stringy black haired lady?
Fear Agent - Twelve Steps in One - Surprised to find that this Tales one-shot actually was a continuation (in a way) of The Last Goodbye. Good read.
Batman #670- I'm a sucker for Tony Daniel art. However, I get the feeling that I needed to have been reading Grant Morrison's run to enjoy this further. Otherwise, as I am not a regular Bats reader, the resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul does nothing for me.
Wasteland #13 - Good read again.
