View Full Version : Who will be the New Avengers and Mighty Avengers artists?

Anybody have any ideas? These are Bendis comics, so it's safe to say that he has his choice of the best artists available and willing.
Here's a list of artists who fit:
John Cassaday - wrapping up Astonishing X-Men.
Paul Pelletier - B lister, but solid and dependable. Wrapping up FF run.
Mark Bagley - he's an A lister when drawing Spidey, but a b lister on other stuff. He's drawing an upcoming Mighty Avengers arc.
Andrea Di Vito - He's a b lister who is doing nothing but short term things now.
Jimmy Cheung - If there is going to be no more Young Avengers, he'd be a great choice for New Avengers.
Trevor Hairsine - Disappeared after his X-Men mini series. Not fast enough.
John Byrne - If the eternal fued is ever resolved, he'd be a great Avengers artist.
Jackson Guice - He's got this Ultimatum mini series, but after that?
Marc Silvestri - I can dream.
Michael Turner - Maybe this is why he was pulled from that Ultimate Wolverine project.
Greg Land - I think he's fantastic, and he's wrapping up his Ultimate/Supreme Power mini series.
Carlos Pacheco - He needs to come back to Marvel.
Phil Jimenez - Would rather he did Avenegers than Spidey, though I look forward to that.
Ron Garney - I hope not, though I think he's very improved and fast enough to handle deadlines, so I think he'd be a perfect candidate for a secondary series like New Excalibur or New Exiles.
David Finch - Never should have left in the first place.
Anybody have any ideas or wishes?

I always liked Ed McGuinness' art. He would be a really good fit for either, IMO.

John Byrne
He revamped the WCA once before, and he could do it again!

I'm happy with Bagley on Mighty. I'd like to see Finch on New Avengers, but he's working on Wolverine now. I think Turner is too slow, isn't him? And he was taken out the Ult. Wolverine mini because there won't be one anymore. Jimmy Cheung could work. Cassaday shouldn't be on either because there are already enough problems in continuity due to a slow artist on MA, it would be dumb to bring another one.

That would be cool.
Dusty, you have a lot of names I would like to see. Cassaday would rock, but I would hate to see the Avengers go down the road Astonishing has. And Pacheco is one of my favorites, but I believe he has schedule problems as well these days, thats why he's off Superman I hear.
Hopefully Finch will be back on one, also would like to see Meleev do New Avengers. Alan Davis would be cool on Mighty. I would say Gary Frank, but he left for DC :(

I really liked McGuiness' Mighty Avengers in his issue of Fallen Son.
Since MA has to play catch up, Bagley would be your man for that.

I would definitely be down with that...Byrne on one, McGuinness on the other. I would have very little to complain about...

The current artists leaving? Not Yu! I'm really really liking his stuff. It's so different than anything out there. All sketchy but finished. The best of both worlds.

Ideally Ed McGuinness with Jason Keith still on colors should take over for Frank Cho and David Finch would come back for Leinil Yu. Dave Finch's style now incoporates too much lines and overrendering but his figure work is still great and style has always fit Bendis's writing style like a glove.
Unfortunately it looks like Ed's stuck on Hulk and Dave's going to fully do Wolverine (which is a funny coincidence). I have no idea who they have planned though, perhaps Salvador Larroca is going to do Mighty or something.

Pat Zircher would be perfect on either book, but his style on Terror, Inc would work amazingly well on New Avengers. He'd have to scale it back a bit for Mighty, but he could do it easily.

This might be a little outside the box, but Pasqual Ferry.

I don't want to see that tracer on any Avengers book.

Nah I don't think he's outside the box, he'd be perfect for either title but Mighty especially.

Outside the box, only because his art has a particular European flair not usually seen on Avengers books. Which would kind of fit the art theme of the two books lately, with Yu and his almost Japanese woodcut-eque style, and Cho's overpolished meticulous boobarama.

As to Ron Garney, it was leaked in a Spider-Man thread by fellow artist Dan Panosian that Garney is working on a solo book. Which is good, he's a much better solo artist than he is team artist. Which is nothing to be ashamed of. I think Dan summed it up in the thread well, could you imagine Frank Miller circa DareDevil working on Avengers?

I think Yu might actually fit into that category somewhat. I love his cluttered fight scenes, but I can't help but think they would work better with a single character focus.

I don't really care who the artist on NA is, since I don't like the book.
As for Mighty, I'd love to see Bagley take over. He's a great team book artist. More importantly, he's reliable and professional, so the book might actually come out on time for a change.

Bagley on Mighty Avengers works for me as well. A great artist that can meet deadlines. Hopefully he becomes permanent.
As for New Avengers, I wouldn't mind seeing the following artists:
Oliver Copiel
Andrea DiVito
Ron Garney
John Romita Jr.
David Finch would be great if he'd come back although after reading the interview he had in Newsarama, I realize that with his work ethic, he wouldn't last long in a regular book.

The perfect choices are the two Lees.
Mighty Avengers - Jim Lee
New Avengers - Jae Lee

New Avengers - Jae Lee
would like to see that too. Would be a great replacement for Yu, who i really like on that book. Sorry, that he leaves.

on New Avengers i have a list of people i would like to see.
Jae Lee would be my number one pick. His work on the Sentry and Inhumans mini shows he can hit the gritty stlye of NA perfectly, and yet his work is clearer than Yu's, so it may with NA some more fans.
David Aja has been showing on Iron Fist that he can do fantastic street level combat, and his lines lines are nice and rough without being unclear.
Kaare Andrews. His work on Spiderman: Reign was very nicely stylised, and i think would work well in NA.

I'd rather not. Not so much because I don't like Romita, because I adore his art, but he's a much better solo character artist. I've seen him draw team books occasionally before, and he just doesn't have the dynamic. Again, I say this not as a knock against the artist. Steve Ditko didn't have the team dynamic. Frank Miller doesn't. Never did. There are a lot of extremely talented artists who are just much better matched drawing a book where a solo character is the focus. And JRJr is one of them.
And stuff like Eternals isn't so much a team book as it is an ensemble book. You never get a multi-page, multi-character battle, where every character has to continue to be the star.

Ideally? Perez, my favourite ever Avengers artist.
But since that's simply not happening, nbor are any of my other top picks- Finch or McNiven- I'll jsut sit and pray it's not someone like Yu.

Andrea DeVito would be excellent for Mighty.
Ed McGuiness wouldn't be bad for Mighty either.
Man, its hard to come up with an artist for New's gritty....how about Paul Gulacy, Clayton Crain, or David Aja?

I think Jae Lee fits into my single character artist theory. Besides, the way he works, I think it's best to leave him for prestige projects.
I want to say Aja and Andrews are too, but honestly, they are so goddamn versatile, they may not be. Their styles seem to change from project to project. But give Aja seemingly doesn't do 22 pages a month, he may not be the best choice. And I don't know that he can't, but on Iron Fist, there are always the flashbacks done by other artists.

DeVito's not bad, but I get a little sense of Paul Ryan from him. His art is technically very good, but kind of static.

I think Andrea is a great guy and is solid as a rock. He does particularly well with the cosmic stuff and even a Thor book would be great but when he does fill ins (like when he did them for Young Avengers) his art seems pedestrian in comparison to a guy like Jimmy Cheung and I think the same thing would happen if he was on either Avengers title.
CARLOS PACHECO is a very good choice to Mighty Avengers.

I really wished he came back from DC.
Carlos looks to be in it for the long haul, maybe as long as Kurt Busiek will be since they like working with each other so much. It just seems to me that since he spent such a long time with Marvel he wanted some fresh stuff to draw like Superman over at DC which looks phenomenal when he does work with Kurt. It's a similar thing to guys like Gary Frank and the Kuberts going over to DC as well and maybe Phil Jimenez coming to Marvel in a vice versa fashion.

Pacheco kinda left Marvel in a huff after Marvel started pulling back his control of Fantastic Four. It was right after his run ended that he split for DC. I get the sense that he was a much bigger Marvel fan.
Mcguinness on Mighty and Divito on NA (He's A-list in my mind)

Byrne, great guy, but his time on a Marvel team hero book should be done.
