You guys should have posted your links well before the deadline and updated them later.
Flashback, you don't have any sequential art in your link anyways. Why bother?

It's still worth it.

Goodluck, anyway.

It would kind of unfair to those who made the deadline if we let people in after the submissions closed. But it is really J.'s call.

Yes and no. It's 'also' kind of unfair that the contest didn't start when stated but everyone was patient until it was launched late. And technically the end of the month is at midnight. I'm not trying be grumpy about it, I'm just reflecting what you are saying and in all reality a noon deadline is not technically fair. There's twelve more hours until the end of the month.

I was surprised to see it cut off today as well. I assumed sept 30th meant til midnight on that day.

J. decided on a noon deadline since the contest started at noon on the 6th. Originally the contest was to end on the 27th but was later extended to the 30th.

What would be unfair would be for people who didn't make the deadline to get in anyway after so many (not me so much but many) busted their asses to either update or create the necessary portfolios to compete within the deadline.
Contest rules are never "fair." They are just whatever was set up by the people running the contest. In this case the cut off was noon and it was clearly stated in the rules. 170+ people made the deadline. A couple didn't.
That's life.

Agreed. It's not the end of the world. I just wished I had heard about it earlier. A lot of contest do typically close at midnight of the close date, but this one doesn't, so that is indeed the way it goes, this round... lol
Good Luck to all who entered!!!
In this case the cut off was noon and it was clearly stated in the rules.
Nah, clear would be if the 30th ended the 30th, not 12 noon. The deadline was first set to the 28th, then to the 30th then specified as 12 noon the 30th. That's not "clearly stated in the rules", that's changing the deadline specifics 3 times during the entry round. Several of us only missed the deadline because we needed to do some last minute work on our entry. A deadline is a deadline but if the deadline is set on the 30th it is reasonable to assume it's midnight the 30th unless otherwise specified. Obviously the otherwise specified bit was not clear or there wouldn't be half a dozen people who read it as otherwise. This wasn't just a competition for me but a means to show off my work hoping to further my career and i did some last minute work with a screwed up arm so i'm more than a little ticked off at the letters PM.
Anyway, i don't really expect a reversal of the decision but i'd be doubly pissed off if it was reversed and i missed it again because i stopped working hours ago due to the contest being closed and went to bed.
Just in case (and i was going to put it all in one link but meh):

Pro - Your work looks really nice. I really like the Were Rats piece.
I was told about the competition a short while before the deadline so I didn't acknowledge all of the deadline details myself knowing I'd have something up before then (even though I read it quite a few times before and after entering.) Having read this thread I went back and found some stuff -- the guy said he was going to close it at noon in several places and, well, he did what he said he was gonna do.
Still, I know how frustrating it can be to miss the chance at an opportunity so the lot of you guys have my sympathies. Just rack it up to experience and continue doing fantastic work.
Found in SUBMISSION ROUND THREAD:
Before you post your link and info, please read the following.
• You must read the CBI FAQ before posting.
• Please post only one entry.
• Use this thread for submission entries only. If you have a question
about the submission process, you can use the Submission Q&A thread
• Do not post comments about entries on this thread. They will be
either deleted or moved. You can post comments on the Submission
public comment thread
Found in the FAQ:
- It is imperative that those who wish to participate in this competition read this entire FAQ and also carefully follow all the instructions for posting their link in the designated thread in the CBI moderated forum. This links thread will only be open to the public on September 6th.
- The preliminary, “open call” round begins Thursday, September 6th at approximately noon E.S.T. (and will run until noon E.S.T. on Sunday, September 30th). Those wishing to be considered for the ten (10) spots in the five (5) round competition must post links to their online portfolio in the officially designated thread in the moderated CBI forum.
Found in ONLY HOURS LEFT TO SUBMIT YOUR LINK! thread:
But remember, the deadline to submit your link is SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30th (the thread above will be closed around 12 PM E.S.T.).
Found in WHAT HAPPENS NEXT... thread (posted at 2:17AM):
With the submissions thread closing at approx. noon (EST) today, the selection process begins.
Everything's pretty much covered in the FAQ and there's quite a bit of info in the threads.

Thanks for that post, CPWilsonIII.
If I'm not mistaken, it was also noon (EST) before the late start and delay (meaning the original deadline of the 28th or whatever it was).
But in any case, didn't moving the date later in the month provide more prep time regardless of when the submissions link was opened? It's not like we announced the contest the day before we started (or planned to start) accepting submissions.
It's more about when you personally heard about the contest and what you had ready to show rather than any arbritrary date or time we picked. Whether it was the first press release or the updated deadline or the final countdown posts to the deadline or the deadline itself - if you missed it, you missed.
Sorry :(

yeah, i think its more of a personal responsibility on the artist's side. i guess being a daily visitor of cbr really helped a lot for me, and others, to be informed of the contest even before it began. j. also took all the efforts to announce it weeks before. i remember i read mine thru comicspace:)
plus, i think we have to be realistic here and realize that comics really demand a lot of work in such a short time. if we can't step up to producing a couple of pages in 30 days, how do we expect to finish 3-5pages in a week?:)
just my 2cents. heheheheh!!!!

You know. I wrote a long winded response and my log in time had timed out and it was lost. Anyway, I just give up and don't care anymore. All I got to say is this.... I remember 14 years or so ago, sitting in a bar in Chicago after the Wizard comic convention. I was sitting with a young Joe Quesada, yes the same editor of Marvel. I had released an independent book that was doing okay and he had just released ASH. I won't go into details other than just to say that we all want to leave a mark on the world.... I thought the deadline was PST and it was EST. It's a shame that the powers that be would disqualify a person for something as inane as that... anyway, Joe was and is a man of deep feeling as is John Romita Jr. (God bless him) and I'll never forget that night. I just hope that everybody visits my link and tells me whatever. I take that to heart more than what some person with his self defined sense of what is right (on deadline or not) has to say about my efforts. God bless you guys and good luck...........

Dude.
Nobody's jumping on you. Rules are rules. Just play the Play At Home version (like most of us).
That's plenty of exposure and your work is damned good. Nothing to get stressed about.

It's a shame that the powers that be would disqualify a person for something as inane as that...
With all due respect, exactly what part is "inane" to you, deadlines or time zones?
I'm sure that all of our judges past and present, including Joe Quesada who was one of our judges in season one, will tell you that both are significant to the competition as well as the life of a comic book creator ;)

It's a shame that the powers that be had a deadline and that you didn't understand it. No need to blame them for it though, it was there the whole time in plain text for everyone to read.

Controversy already? who'da thunk it?;)
J, Brandon and crew, damned if ya do, damned if ya don't. You guys provide a great opportunity here, unfortunately, "unfair" will always be thrown your way no matter how you try to please the masses.
Artists who got there stuff in, looks great, I saw some really cool stuff but only had time to check out a fraction of entrants. Good Luck to all.
As for those who didn't get stuff in on time, you're not doing yourselves any favors by bitchin'. Yea, it's disappointing but get your stuff together for the next opportunity. You never know when it's going to strike. You can make things happen because of, along with, or in spite of;) competitions. Looking forward to the show. -CR

man I feel really sorry for those who misses the dealine. Glad I learned about it over at the Image Comics Johnathan Hickman's message board. I was one of those early birds but I was in the 50s entries. Maybe next year if this CBI catches on with the industry maybe even more big names are searching for the next BIG thing. There would be alot more people entering and posting early. You guys missing it may wants to look over what the other contestants are doing and perhaps matches what they can do with your own. You won’t get the judges to evaluate your art right now, just look at yours then look at everyone else.
I wasn't sure i was going to be able to keep up anyway due to my arm being screwed up from another deadline on a paid job but decided close to the CBI deadline to participate anyway just to get some exposition but needed more sequentials. I'm an illustrator and concept designer and all the deadlines i had for paid jobs were on time even if it sometimes means sleepless nights.
I misread this deadline, my mistake entirely. Thanks for responding nonetheless, J. Disappointed but i understand. Thanks for the compliment and support CPWilson. And as said before good luck to all who do participate.

Thanks for understanding and being a good sport about this. And please don't be discouraged from parcipating with the play-at-home folks! Like I said in another thread, I can remember at least one "non-contestant" from a previous season who drew attention to himself (the right kind of attention) with his assignments on a non-competition thread and got work from an editor who was watching as a fan.
If you missed the deadline or don't make one of the ten spots, don't shoot yourself in the foot by either giving up, not taking advantage of this platform, or worse alienating people on the boards... there are actually quite a number industry types who like watching CBI and you never know who's out there looking for an artist.

I knew about this a month in advance. In fact, I knew about this in August and that was one I signed up for the forum on Comic Book Resources. After seeing the competition, I decided this time around I wasn't exactly ready for any challenges there had to be. Maybe next time. I decided just to maybe do the play at home thing and post whatever the result was on my gallery and get started from there.
I'm excited for the top ten. I can't wait to see who made it!
