In Variety today...
David Goyer to direct 'Vampire'
New Regency acquires rights to 'Baltimore'
By MICHAEL FLEMING
New Regency has acquired screen rights to "Baltimore, or The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire," an illustrated novel by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden. The authors will write the screenplay, and David Goyer will direct.
Deal, which includes rights to the book and scripting fees, is worth seven figures.
John Baldecchi ("Ultra Violet") and Stacy Maes ("Jumper") will produce.
Just-published by Bantam, the graphic novel tells the story of the awakening of supreme evil on Earth. Lord Henry Baltimore is bitten by a demonic vampire bat on a WWI battlefield. The plague destroys his family, and Baltimore creates a team to hunt and fight the Red King, the embodiment of all evil.
Mignola created the comicbook character and series "Hellboy" and was a conceptual artist on "Bram Stoker's Dracula" and "Blade 2." Golden has written novels including "The Myth Hunters" and "Wildwood Road," and three of his titles are being developed into movies by studios.
Goyer, who wrote the "Blade" films and directed "Blade 2" and "The Invisible," next directs the Sheldon Turner-scripted X-Men origin film "Magneto" for Fox. He also wrote "Batman Begins" with Christopher Nolan and just worked with Regency and Maes on the upcoming Doug Liman-directed "Jumper."
Deal is the fourth made by Regency that fits its new mandate to make films appealing to a young male demographic. Regency is developing a movie from the Virgin Comics title "Virulents," with John Moore directing and John Cox ("Sgt. Rock") writing, and it acquired the Leslie Bohem/M.T. Ahern action-thriller spec script "The Darkest Hour."

Wow! That's awesome news, Christine - major congrats to you guys, and to Mr. Golden as well.
Even though I'm a bit leery whenever Hollywood adapts anything for the screen, I'm cautiously optimistic, knowing that Mike and Christopher will be involved.
Here's hoping... :)

That didn't take long at all!
I am half way through the book - incredible stuff! - and have envisioned certain scenes in my head already. And while many options never get made, this one simple has to! Congrats to Mike and Chris on their good fortune and recognition.

Congrats from me too! I'm so glad, that we picked up the rights for the German edition of "Baltimore"! While reading, I always thought "This would work sooo perfectly as a script for a huge and super-dark gothic movie!".

Wasn't Blade 2 directed by our beloved Guillermo? ;) David Goyer wrote it but didn't direct. It looks like the folks at New Regency don't check the facts good enough while writing a press release. ;)

Goyer directed the 3rd Blade movie. It was good, didn't have the GDT flair, but rounded out the trilogy. Goyer hunh? It's nice to see that he's doing Magneto. Hopefully he's up to the challenge on a big budget and that the studio thinks he's got the chops to work in their franchise. Congrats to Mike and Chris! We've been bouncing names around on another thread for casting...now we get to speculate on our other cast members. Guessing we won't see this movie until 2010?

I have to be honest here. While I'm thrilled that Mike and Chris are getting this opportunity to get the movie rolling I'm not very happy about the studio and director's track record. Oh how I wish they could have gotten GDT behind this one.

I have a feeling that a movie will give us a more complete look at the character, as I felt that the novel (in some ways) only gave us the mearest of hints at the kind of adventures that Baltimore could potentially take part in.
Anyway, this is great news and a huge feather in the hat of messiers Golden and Mignola!! :D

Gerard Butler as Baltimore.
THIS IS...BALTIMORE!!!!! :p
Hmm, I wonder if rippling muscles and abs you could iron laundry on would be called for in a Baltimore movie? Doubtful, but I'm sure Hollywood will find a way if it increases the female audience by even a fraction. :)

Those abs are long gone. Apparently much of the 300 cast was in physical pain because of the lengths they had to go to to maintain those abs, so I'm not looking for Baltimore in leather underpants. Although, it's Hollywood, so who knows how they might go crazy with it. I shouldn't be giving them ideas.
Nah, he's just the right face, voice and age, IMO.
Would also accept: Clive Owen, Daniel Craig.

Gdeo and I have already decided upon Daniel Craig as Baltimore. It must come to pass!

Oooh. I would like to see Clive Owen as Childress. I still say Peter Lorre should get the part of Doctor Rose. Anyone happen to have a time machine?

It annoys me that Variety refers to Baltimore as a "graphic novel." The earlier description as an illustrated novel is better. Splitting hairs? Of course, but what else should I do with this very sharp knife?
People who read that it is a graphic novel will dismiss it as a simple over grown comic book, instead of the work of fiction that it is. Mr Golden has crafted an exceptional novel (enhanced by Mike's illustrations) but it is far from a graphic novel in any regards.

Exciting news! I enjoyed every minute of the story, here's hoping for an awesome film version.
And Daniel Craig; nice.
I wonder if he's too expensive?

Since we don't get to be the casting directors I think we're just daydreaming. Well, I am anyway! ;)
Meanwhile, extra congratulations should go to Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden. Even if the film never gets made the announcement has given the book a huge boost on Amazon's bestseller list!

Yeah, me too. I just like to indulgently fantasize about my dream casting lining up with the reality of the movie making industry. ;)

Thank you, Christopher. I'm glad, that we got the opportunity. We have been in touch with the rights agency licensing the FoxAtomic horror comics the time Baltimore was offered and the friendly lady knew that we had a "history" when it comes to Mignola-material - so, she asked us. Baltimore is my favorite "gem" in our 2008 catalogue - which also features Lost Girls, Mouse Guard, Whiteout, I am Legion, a new edition of Moebius' Arzach, our new line of Star Trek novels and, of course, new Hellboy and BPRD books. Whew, 2008 will be fun!

I really hope they do it some justice, everything Goyer touchs I seem to hate or don't like something.
Goyers writing was okay on the first two Blade films, cheap but watch worthy I suppose, Blade Trinity on the other hand sucked, everything about that film... sucked and his work on Batman Begins... terrible film and lets not forget the short lived Blade live action tv show.
either way if its Mikes work, I can't wait to see it.

I could not agree more. David Goyer is an average script write at best, and his Blade entries were amazingly average.
Congrats to the Mignolas' though........

I'm willing to give Goyer a chance on this. If he surrounds himself with talented people (already done) and learns from Blade 3.
Which was pretty damn painful.
But yeah, I'm trying to go into this with an open mind seeing as how who else is involved and the fact that people can improve.

Well, he's done some mediocre stuff... and he wrote the greatest superhero movie ever made. With Mignola and Chris writing how can he screw it up?
:D

That is good news. I finally received and finished reading the book. I enjoyed it very much and think the source material can be used to make a good movie. So many scenes depicted in the book, if translated well, would definitely make for an enjoyable cinematic experience.
Congratulations.
