View Full Version : Silly Groo--Serious Issues!

Groo's long been one of my top favorite comics for lots of reasons, but often most of all for daring to take on topics -- illiteracy, pollution, politics and religions, and (my top favorite) advertising in entertainment -- and now, AIDS.

Does anyone else see the very close parallels with the monkey/coughing disease in the latest number one with the AIDS scourge still -still!- coursing across the world?

They (Mark and Sergio) talk about how people pass the (coughing monkey) disease along by kissing, how few are able to refrain from indulging such urges..... like sexual sharing transmits HIV (also thought to have originated with sick monkeys, BTW); they talk about how using simple mouth coverings could help prevent infection.... like simple condoms can help prevent HIV infection; there is Official Denial from politicians and religious leaders; there's a magic cure with its own side effects.

Well, -I- see the connections, and I applaud Mark and Sergio (and Tom and Stan) and Dark Horse for their imaginative, humorous, and timely, well-needed portrayal of a world situation not unlike our own.

THANKS, GUYS AND GALS!
and may you and we all stay healthy.

best wishes,
Matt Levin

I love Usagi, and so I feel like I need to start getting into Groo, but I've just never made the jump. This sounds pretty cool tho - what issue are you talking about here?

I guess it's called the Groo special (away from De Stash right now) but it just--like last week--came out. It's bigger and more pricey than most Groo comics and not really as fulfilling (lots of semi-interesting 'other Groo stuff') but the lead story is Groo at its best, in my opinion. My favorite issue is #76 (sigh, I -think- it's #76) in which Groo watches a puppet show, and, in which television advertising, its history (more or less) and effect are rightly skewered.

Usagi? You mean that bunny book? YEAH MAN! Good choice! With ya allllllll the way there!!!

I bet my LCS still has that Groo special... I'll try to pick it up this weekend. Thanks for the suggestion. The only Groo I own is Louder Than Words #1...

which... now that I think about it... isn't Groo at all is it? Just Sergio doing other stuff. It's still awesome tho!

I had a lot of people asking about the Albedo at the show...

There's never been a Groo/Usagi crossover, right? And, actually, didn't one or the other of the creators actually say that it'll never happen? That's kind of sad.

I did go get the Groo special this weekend. Good stuff! Thanks for the recommend, Matt.

(and that hot chick is my girlfriend... she helped me out at the show :))

Actually, explicitly, no: never has been a cross-over.
however.....!

A certain barbarian with a big potato-like nose has been seen now and then in crowds in strangely (or, at least, as yet- ) undestroyed towns as Usagi passes through!

which? where?
not a clue! ah, happy searching?!

best wishes,
Matt

I believe you're thinking of this issue, Groo#84:

That's right, a Groo crossover will most likely never happen. The creators have made that very clear on more than ne occasion.

Dunno how reliable this article is but the dude states that there's not one , but two Groo crossovers coming.
