Groo's long been one of my top favorite comics for lots of reasons, but often most of all for daring to take on topics -- illiteracy, pollution, politics and religions, and (my top favorite) advertising in entertainment -- and now, AIDS.
Does anyone else see the very close parallels with the monkey/coughing disease in the latest number one with the AIDS scourge still -still!- coursing across the world?
They (Mark and Sergio) talk about how people pass the (coughing monkey) disease along by kissing, how few are able to refrain from indulging such urges..... like sexual sharing transmits HIV (also thought to have originated with sick monkeys, BTW); they talk about how using simple mouth coverings could help prevent infection.... like simple condoms can help prevent HIV infection; there is Official Denial from politicians and religious leaders; there's a magic cure with its own side effects.
Well, -I- see the connections, and I applaud Mark and Sergio (and Tom and Stan) and Dark Horse for their imaginative, humorous, and timely, well-needed portrayal of a world situation not unlike our own.
THANKS, GUYS AND GALS!
and may you and we all stay healthy.
best wishes,
Matt Levin
