View Full Version : Can Wonder Man still fly under his own power?

I know that in recent year, Wonder Man's powers evolved so that he could be able to fly without his rocket belt or pack. And when he used his powers he gained an ionic aura.

But in recent issues of THE MIGHTY AVENGERS, Wonder Man is seen without the aura and has to be carried by Sentry into battle and dropped into the fray.

Can Wonder Man still fly without his rocket belt or did he lose this power somewhere along the way?

He still can fly.

He still can fly.
He must just like the feeling of having Sentry's beefy arms wrapped around him. It would explain the safari jacket.

It seemed like he was flying with the Sentry at the end of the latest NA too.

Go figure.

Maybe he's just lazy...

yeah, even black widow seems to be flying solo in that pic.

Simon you lazy cad.

It's a good thing Simon has super strength and invulnerability, or hanging like that would tear the hell out of his shoulder, especially if Sentry is really moving.

Aw, you spoiled the coming sub-plot...

Yep, Wonderman can still fly on his own power. That cover was just an example of Cho's weird crush on the safari jacket-era Simon who couldn't fly naturally. I mean, I'm all for the "classic" looks, but after awhile, and with certain characters, you just gotta move on.

He's not flying at all inside the issue and I wondering if he's either lost his power to fly or its been retconned out for whatever reason.

I guess they realized that 'energy-form' Wonder Man was lame and reverted him back to his pre-Force Works cool.

Ed McGuinness has him flying with the aura trail . . .

What the heck? Ares can fly? (that or I'm assuming he has a jet pack on and they didn't include the shoulder latches like they have on Black Widow). And when has Yellowjacket needed a jetpack? Can't his suit fly at full size (isn't that what those shoulder dohickeys do?)

The Ares and Hank Pym thing is enough for me to take this either as a mistake or as an artistic interpretation.

Are we sure it's an ionic trail? It could be his hip rockets...

Personaly I prefer when he doesn't fly. It makes him more unique than other Superman wannabees. That was the appeal of Simon when I was a kid, that he was just a tough guy with an uppercut that smashed like thunder.

I like Simon, but darn it if this doesn't pop into my head everytime someone names his powers.

That was only the case for the cover art. Wonder Man flies 3 times himself in that issue.

Arn't you talking about Mighty Avengers #1. The images don't show up.

I thought you were talking about the cover for Mighty Avengers #1.

I thought you were talking about the cover for Mighty Avengers #1.The cover to MIGHTY AVENGERS #1's second printing is a scan from the book's interior.

I just posted the pics that they came from, the book's opening scene, with Sentry carrying Simon and dropping him into battle. If he can indeed fly on his own, this makes no sense.

I can't find my old post... but I pointed out back when the issue was new, that Simon clearly flies three times in that issue. I guess go with Joe Acro's idea that he was conserving strength for the upcoming battle. Or even easier, just blame Frank Cho, since that's the real reason Simon is being carried. :p

I just flipped through the first four issues of MIGHTY AVENGERS to look for Simon and in there are several instances where he clearly flies, including one time that he's carrying Ares.

So what's the deal with issue #1? Why would Sentry carry him?

All I can think of is that Cho just got a page that had them charging in from the sky and didn't know about Simon's new status quo until later on.

weren't they descending from a plane in that image that sentry is carrying simon? maybe it was somehow more convenient for simon to hold on for the ride. or maybe sentry was dropping him off at one point in the battle and heading to another. it was probably nothing, though. an artistic bit.

sentry is more than a little nuts right? maybe sentry just started carrying him around like a doll and simon was to freaked out to say anything

Wonder Man: Uh... S-sentry? Hi, uh... yeah, I can... I can actually fly under my own-
Sentry: Quiet, friend Wonder Man! Though I would welcome the chance to talk with you after battle, right now the slightest break in concentration could cause me to tear your arms off or accidentally hurl you into the sun!
Wonder Man: I- ....yeah, okay. Go get 'em, champ.

Another Wonder Man question. Does he still have internal organs and such or is he just ionic energy?

Rahul

If he can get punched and defeated and trussed up like the heroes in WWH, I guess he'd have 'em....

Maybe they were challenging society's attitudes towards gender roles by showing it's ok for men to hold hands with each other.

You know, in other cultures around the world it isn't taboo for men to hold hands or act more affectionate towards eachother.

maybe its just that the Sentry is a lot faster?

Wonder Man can fly under his 'own power' to a certain extent. Meaning, without his belt, I think, he's not able to fly as that belt harnesses his ionic powers for flight. He can still jump great distances, though.

He does have an invisible (and tacky) red jacket and boot combo with an oversize belt. But you have to be really smart to see it.

I'm smart enough to see it :(

Since the Scarlet Witch resurrected Simon from the dead, he has slowly turned more human and less ionic. In the Avengers Two with Beast, he appears normal until he flies or gets real angry. His purple and red ions start to pop out.

I like this, kinda' a combo of Superman and the Hulk. The angrier he gets, the more powerful he gets, and his energy bubbles out.

In the Ms. marvel series he flies normal, as well as in Mighty Avengers, and the Civil War series.

About the cover, I think Sentry flew into him and knocked his glasses off. Simons smilling even though he's pissed and Sentry is trying to make amends buy setting him down while he readjusts them.
