*Facepalm*

I was so busy being obnoxious about this on my blog, my MySpace, and to anyone else who would listen that I forgot to be obnoxious about it here. So allow me my public service announcement. *ahem*

Banned Books Week is this week, September 24 -October 6. I encourage you all to stick your tongue out and/or flash your bums at the Though Police this week. Just don't do it at the same time, because you may hurt yourself.

25 years ago (give or take a few) my best friend's teaching job was put in jeopardy in NE Ohio for daring to have his high school Soph-juniors read Of Mice and Men.

If I were an English teacher, my students would be warped for life. It's probably good that I stuck with librarianship.

I read that in junior high, too, I believe. Why would that book be in bad taste?

Probably the part where the loose woman tries to seduce the retard.

Rape and language, I think.

Well, not to ME, just what it may have been.

there are people that will claim they believe in freedom yet support the idea of banning and censoring books. I'm so very glad that I was raised by parents who let me seek out knowledge and ideas from any source I chose and were willing to let me make up my own mind as to the validity and worth of it.

It is only those that are insecure in their own ideas and beliefs that seek to restrict access to new ones.

it's a shame that some people are as forward thinking as your parents...to be honest the whole idea is pretty senseless to me given that these things happen in real life and how do you protect someone from real life??...you can't and for me, that's pretty much the bottomline...and quite frankly, if someone really wants access to something, they'll find a way to get it, so that in and of of itself defeats the whole purpose...

Not likely, as I've sworn off library conventions after last year's ACRL disaster. But if my boss says I have to go or I'll lose my job, I'll reconsider. :D

In the meantime, I may read the latest Anita Blake book. It's full of smut, witchcraft, and the occasional demon raising. I may send a copy to the American Family Association (http://www.afa.net/), along with Crooked Little Vein. They could use the education.

Probably the part where the loose woman tries to seduce the retard.

I guess I could see that. Although that is nothing worse then a woman/man trying to seduce a young man/woman.

Rape and language, I think.

Well, not to ME, just what it may have been.

Okay the language I remember, but I had forgotten about the rape.

Maybe not in schools, but an adults should be able to read what they want.

And haven't these people learned that the more noise you make about something, the more people want to see/read it? I would have had no interest in see "The Last Temptation of Christ" had Oklahoma not banned the sale of it, in state.

I've got a variety of questionable books on my shevles. Of couse there's Catcher in the Rye and Farenheit 451. I also have Alan Moore's Lost Girls.

Oh and I got a Japanese adult manga which is pretty much a September 11th porno. It starts on September 11th and has its main female character bring western sexual freedom to Osama Bin Laden and Al Queda via a giant gangbang. There's also peace talks between Dubya and Saddam via a threesome with another female character. So, yeah, if more people knew about that book, I'm sure they'd call for it to be banned.

Farenheit 451.

The irony of banning a book about book bannings never ceases to astound me.

Well, the name of it is Viva Freedom by the mangaka group Tuna Empire. I downloaded it first, but a friend thankfully got it for me for Christmas or something. I would have bought it anyway. It's all in Japanese though. Though Icarus Publishing did translate another book by Tuna Empire, one called The Spirit of Capitalism about modern business.. and tons of office sex. Here's hoping they're ballsy enough to bring over Viva Freedom. Though I think I did find an online translation for the first chapter by some fan group.

No, we can't dance any better than anyone else. I submit this horrible movie on Youtube as proof.

Part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxDLeINX8Wg)
Part 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=up7XIqb2C7M)

But you have to get through the horrible opening to get to the horrible dancing.
