Latest ASB&R preview.

I dunno. I haven't been following this book too closely but is it losing its zing?

I mean, previously, we got Hooker Canary, Robin eating rats, Barbara "bullshitting dad", "the goddman Batman" and "step aside, spermbag!"

Now we get, "Let me take you to school, suckers... IN CHEMISTRY!"

And "You don't know hurt either, you wads!"

I dunno. It lacks rhythm. This book seems to rely on viral phrases that become online classics.

I don't see anything that snappy in the new preview.

Sad.

looks awesome...

interesting that they took the Swastika off Superman in the preview below... but not off of Wonder Woman...

I think that I love ASB&R. Call me crazy. Call me without taste. Whatever. This is just one of the most fun, most psychotic, most interesting "What if?" stories of all time.

I've said it before, I wouldn't want this Batman (or Canary, or Wonder Woman, or Superman, etc.) in the DCU proper.

But in their own little crazy universe, where Batman really IS the psycho he could easily have become? Where Wonder Woman is a man-hating nutcase? Where ... well, you get the idea. It totally works.

And I absolutely believe these are valid interpretations of the characters. They easily COULD have gone this way.

Good, plain, fun.

It had zing?

See, I thought it was awful as a Batman story (aside from pretty poster art) but oddly fascinating to see the Batman cast in what amounted to an extended Family Guy gag with dialog seemingly ripped from a cranky message board.

Well on the plus side those previews of Batman 669 and Freedom Fighters 1 look aMAZing.

It's still being made? One of the worst superhero-comics of all time? And it's losing its zing? The comic that makes NFL Superpro look classy and sophisticated?

Wow.

It's even more awkward phrasing than that though. He says "You don't know from hurt either, you wads!", similarly to on page 2 where he says "You don't know from screwed, you losers!"

What's up with the "from" being thrown in there?

Wow.

Again, I have to say.... Damn lady you've really been outspoken and vocal lately...!

Is there some kind of assertiveness seminars you've been going to? I'm not used to you being so direct and to the point. Not to mention damn witty.

Ongoing group therapy as a part of my regular one-on-one therapy, with the main focus being the treatment of my anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Part of the anxiety treatment involves assertiveness training. The once a month group sessions involve role-playing common social situations and minor conflicts.

So yes, I've been to some assertiveness seminars. And I'm taking drugs.

Mostly though, I've just been feeling a little isolated lately; I spend the day taking care of the baby, the afternoon helping my siblings with homework and fixing the family supper, and by the time I'm ready for bed, I'm exhausted. I can't let what little frustrations that build up out on the baby or the kids or my mom, so I come here.

I apologize if my irritability has upset or annoyed anyone lately. That wasn't my intent. I've mostly just been trying to let off some steam.

I wanna be taken to school by Gilda! Especially when she uses her three-day substitute lesson plans! AND I wanna get involved in her role-playing exercises ... MY favorite is when I role-play a level 7 Paladin! Kris has a Monk, BTW! Yay Gilda!

Wow.

Allow me to spin that.

YABS' own Buzz Dixon is an under appreciated industry luminary whose work makes some efforts by Frank Miller pale in comparison.

(Just sayin', we kinda DO have NFL Superpro's second writer as a board regular. I'm still waiting to ask him about the Hopi controversy.)

I certainly haven't been annoyed. Speaking strictly for myself, I haven't seen you coming off 'irritable' so much as opinionated and outspoken. These, to me, are admirable qualities. But you certainly haven't been denigrating one whit to anyone here, or said anything that I could have taken as offensive.

Assertiveness is a good thing. It's a strength, so I say 'good for you'.

You know you shouldn't look, but you can't help but strain your neck to see if there's blood all around.....

Heck, he lost me when Batman murdered a bunch of cops and called Robin "retarded".

I still love a lot of his older stuff, the Daredevil run, the Wolverine mini, and Sin City, but I won't be buying anything else he does unless there's some indication that it's greatly improved.

I still like Batman: Year One. I credit his editors for keeping his jerkiness in check.

ASB&R is simply one of the funniest, most enjoyable comics out there today.

Miller has taken all of these great characters, grabbed their worst characteristics and clichés and then run over them with the comic equivalent of a freight train.

What’s not to love.

No lasting appeal.

I'll give it that it's at least nothing that anyone would have ever expected, but beyond the shock value factor, there's nothing else there beyond some flashy art and a few crazy catch phrases.

I'm somewhat surprised that DC didn't ask Liefeld to do this series.

It's sad that Batman apparently *failed* chemistry. No special fire or explosion hazards are associated with bleach.

(BLEACH. THey're selling BLEACH! Pointing out how ridiculous that is in the comic itself doesn't actually make it less ridiculous! BLEACH!)

Well Batman didn't quite do those things.

Dick asks Batman who he is, and Batman responds (paraphrasing from memory): "Are you stupid? Are you a retard? Who am I? I'm the goddamn Batman!"

But the whole scene is Batman trying to keep Dick's mind off of what had just happened (his parents being murdered in front of him) by being insane himself.

And he doesn't murder anyone. It's sort of like how the Hulk can destroy half a city, and no one dies. That's how I took it, anyway.

It's even more awkward phrasing than that though. He says "You don't know from hurt either, you wads!", similarly to on page 2 where he says "You don't know from screwed, you losers!"

What's up with the "from" being thrown in there?

It's a very old-style construction. You rarely hear people talk like that anymore. But people of my grandparents' generation did a lot.

It's the sort of thing where if you know/knew someone who immigrated to the US in the 1920s or 1930s, you might be very likely to hear it.

It's a Yiddish idiomatic construction that has been adopted by some American dialects.

Um, I mean, yeah--awkward.

Bruce Waynowietcz says, "I wipe the grimy kugel from my lip, noting at least three loose teeth and five missing molars. I grab my grappling gun and crash through the glass ceiling of the shandhoiz. The filthy wretches wallow in their own juices there. Every last momzer scatters. Some tsatskele shrieks. All the more fun for me. I chase and twist the putznashers one by one, popping and severing their grubby, schlemielly hands. This is a delivery room and I am the mohel."

Yes, he did. I'm not going to dig up my copy to look for it, but IIRC, even Dick makes note of his murdering the cops. And you quote the part where he calls Dick a retard:

Well, like I said, with the cops, it seemed more like a situation where Hulk can demolish half of some city, and yet no one dies. Until there is confirmation in the book that Batman killed anyone, I take it like that.

Even were there confirmation, it still wouldn't be murder. But that's a different discussion.

And he clearly isn't calling Dick retarded. He's just ranting in an attempt to scare the crap out of him. Bruce respects Dick, in his own, warped, Goddamn Batman way. :)

He ran cops down in the road, before taking the Batmobile into flying mode.

FLYING MODE! Gah!

I have to strongly disagree. He ran them over with a car that weighs at least a couple of tons at high speed. Unless we get a "still alive" reference, it's really unreasonable to assume they're not dead.

Even were there confirmation, it still wouldn't be murder. But that's a different discussion.

It absolutely would be murder. They may be bad cops, but that doesn't change murder into something else.

And he clearly isn't calling Dick retarded. He's just ranting in an attempt to scare the crap out of him. Bruce respects Dick, in his own, warped, Goddamn Batman way. :)

We must have read different books, because in mine he clearly does call him stupid and retarded. It's part of a rant, sure, but that rant includes calling him stupid and retarded.
