Hey everyone-
I am working on a research project focusing on elements of folklore and mythology in Mike Mignola's work (principally Hellboy, obviously). I have thus far been unable to get in touch with him (of course), but I did read that some years ago Wizard Magazine held a contest in which the winner received "books from Mike Mignola's personal library". I was wondering if a list of those books is available, and if not perhaps contact information of the winner (so I could ask them personally; they'd remember for sure). Anyone know anything about these books, or others Mignola is big on (besides Dracula)? Any and all help is seriously appreciated.
Thanks!

He always talks about Bernhardt J. Hurwood's Passport To the Supernatural (http://www.bookfinder.com/search/?ac=sl&st=sl&qi=oJP5,7G02o,RHqn2j1Zwkb6MTWA_0843025852_1:61:738 ), which is indeed good. I'd also be very interested in knowing what the full contents of that library that Wizard gave away were!

On somewhat of a tangent, I'd be interested in discussing what everyone's favorite books are.
Would love to see some photos of Mike's bookshelves.

From an interview I've seen, its gigantic. I'd love to get into some of those books he recommended in the Hellboy Christmas Special.

Oh, drat.

Here I thought, by the title of the thread, that you were giving away books about wizardry. And I was all looking forward to being able to turn people into good drivers and transmute peanut butter into jelly. But, alas, it is not so.

But I know that Mike's book collection is extensive (duh) and he has purchased several books from Dark Delecacies on his trips there. Perhaps he even has a book or two about wizardry!

Well we're getting closer at least, a little at a time- can anyone list the books he "recommends" in the Xmas special? I don't have it.

Thanks for the mention of Passport To the Supernatural; I'd never heard of it and can't wait to track it down. If nothing else my post has given me that, but let's see if we can get MORE on the table!

I just read the Strange Places TPB (it's great) and he mentions William Hope Hodgson, who I'd never heard of before. The local bookshop doesn't have anything by him but I plan on hunting some down- apparently Lovecraft dug him quite a bit and that's always good enough for me (as if Mignola isn't).

The Ghost by William D. O'Connor
The Water Ghost of Harrowby Hall by John Kendrick Bangs
The Ghosts of Grantley by Leonard Kip
Christmas Eve in the Blue Chamber by Jerome K. Jerome

And -
take a look at this video, it was posted here in March (and I found the original thread! :)):

He's often cited Manley Wade Wellman's "Iron John" novels as sources of inspiration as well. I bought one once off his recommendation, but still haven't gotten around to reading it... I have read some other Wellman stuff that I enjoyed, though.

If you have trouble with Mignola's picks, you could just check out anything that influenced Lovecraft. There is a great book that has HPLs entire library cataloged.......

That sounds like some book; Lovecraft has led me to some amazing things, including one of my favorite authors ever, Ambrose Bierce. Anyone who hasn;t read his stuff should PRONTO- a good one to start with is Tales of Soldiers and Civilians (aka In the Midst of Life). Robert W. Chambers is another good find; same with Algernon Blackwood. I'd bet Mignola's familiar with all those cats.

That video was pretty great, too. Here are a few titles I gleamed from it (most are completely unhelpful):

the dark side of guy de Maupassant
a tide of terror
aware of fear
Hollywood gothic
spooky stories
complete book of terror
best ghost stories (dover)
The literary ghost
rahl dahl’s book of ghost stories
the midnight company
Gaslight Nightmare(s)
a Sherlock holmes set
new gothic
a bunch just say Ghost Stories
a bunch just say Vampires

Wellman's an author I've been meaning to get around to, but haven't yet.

Some of my book collection is viewable here: http://www.librarything.com/profile/Powerslave214

LibraryThing is a very cool website. One of these days, I'll have all my books cataloged there, but it'll take awhile.
