View Full Version : 2008 and beyond: What excites you in comics?

As we enter the final quarter of 2007, I'm looking ahead as to what projects and/or books have been announced by DC, Marvel and all the other publishers that are to be released soon....
What are you looking forward to the most in 2008? Be they creative changes or brand new titles or something that's already on-going.
Personally speaking, the one thing I'm most excited about is Jim Shooter's return to the Legion. There's a great interview with Shooter on CBR's main site (http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=11922), which is what got me thinking about creating this thread.
There's a TON of stuff coming out soon and in '08 that I'm eager to read, but that is the one project that I definitely cannot wait to see and read and has me acting like a giddy fanboy.
So what say the rest of you? :)

Gail going from strength to strength with successive projects ( shame she had to leave BoP, though).
...as for the other stuff happening, I'll wait and see.

Spider-Woman by Bendis and Maleev
Teen Titans Year One by Ivory somethin' and Karl Kerschl (for Kerschl's art)
Peter Milligan's Marvel Knights Namor project
Final Crisis by Morrison and Jones
Quite honestly, I don't think I've been less excited about comics than I am now.
Nothing's really holding my attention like it used to. Which is sad, because I used to read stuff like X-Men, and thought I'd ALWAYS stick with it, and now it's been close to two years without reading either of the flagship books.
When I heard Spider-Man was going to be cut down to one book, and come out three times a month, I thought maybe I'd check it out, but the more I hear about this "One More Day" storyline, the less I'm interested in picking up the book once it's over.

The writer you're thinking of is Amy Wolfram, actually. And I may check this out, too.
Also, there's...
The first League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen volume from Top Shelf.
Paul Dini & Amanda Conner's Black Canary/Zatanna project.
Dan Slott's (even though he technically starts at the end of '07) & Bob Gale's respective Spider-Mans.
Doug Moench & Kelley Jones's Batman: Unseen miniseries.
Chuck Dixon's return to Robin.
James Robinson's JSA hardcover (assuming it does hit in '08).
Vertigo's The Alcoholic graphic novel.

You took my answer, but I can expand on it: I'm excited about the Legion not only in its main DC title, but also in its Johnny DC title, its appearances in Action Comics and (I suspect) Final Crisis, and in the cartoon.

Ah, one other thing I'm looking forward to is Mike Kunkel's "Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam" series.

All-Star Superman being continued with Grant Morrison working with a team of one shot artists.
I love Quitely's art but 12 issues isn't enough.
Pity Curt Swan and Gil Kane aren't around for issues but Morrison/Perez has been joked about for years as the team that would very literally make heads explode. All the crazy ideas and the little details in the art. (Did Gail start this back in YABS?)
I'm kinda hoping for Morrison/Perez for an issue, obviously, and I'd dig classic Superman creators like Jurgens, Sale or McGuinness as well...
... But there are a wealth of artists it would be great to see working with Morrison.
I'm not sure I have much enthusiasm for anything "in continuity" though the Skrull Invasion sounds cool. And Final Crisis may be good if nobody gets in Morrison's way.

Oh. Yeah. Shooter on Legion sounds fun though I'm really more interested in what Johns is doing with the Lightning Saga team.

I never seem to have much of an idea what's coming up, so all I get excited about is seeing books I enjoy keep doing what they do.
Except League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Black Dossier. Hell's yes I'm excited about that, whenever it comes out and however I have to get hold of it.

Sarah took my answers! I also like the Sinestro Corps crossover they're doing right now. I'm actually picking up GL again. Metal Men!!! That's the mainstream stuff. Indy stuff I'll grab will be OverMan and it'd better be good SG! And more but I don't want to keep everyone all day...

Krueger and Ross' Superpowers from Dynamite.
The rest of David Petersen's Mouse Guard: Winter of 1152 (which, I'm assuming, will probably stretch into Spring of '08).
Monthly BPRD, Hellboy, and/or Lobster Johnson comics leading up to Mignola's "third act" for the series.

Oooo... I forgot about Superpowers.
D'oh.
Ok, add that to my list! :)

I'd like it if Darain13 was a monthly instead of all Ashley's side projects. That and DOOMED have been his most coherent comics to date.

Terry Moore on Runaways.
I wasn't going to get that and then they announced Humberto Ramos is on it.

Anything Brubaker is doing.
Anything Gage is doing.
And just because I feel the need to pimp him out lately, him being the most underrated artist drawing men in uncomfortably tight pants today, anything Pat Zircher is drawing.

For DC and Marvel:
Green Lantern stuff: Still in my opinion the best superhero comics on the market.
Dark Tower and Ultimate Iron Man: Finally, the next minis will be out.
Non DC and Marvel:
Pax Romana, Surburban Glamour, more Doktor Sleepless, Starchild, and the countless other gems I've been discovering outside the mainstream.

The New X-Men is always my favorite book the week it comes out.
It is everything an X book should be, balancing the old with the new, humor with pathos and utilizing two of my favorite artists in the biz. the current and previous arcs are just mouthwateringly pleasant.
Can't get enough of it.
