Whenever I look at this game I can't help but think that both Nintendo and Sega have wasted the biggest crossover in video game history.

I agree wholeheartedly. Seriously, gamers have been clamoring for a face-up between the two for years, and this is what we get? I especially love the footrace part, since Sonic should win that between the time it takes Mario to put one foot down then the other. I pray that Sonic shows up SSBB, because that will be a lot closer to what I believe many fans wanted.

Strangely, this game seems more about pimping the Beijing olympics than either of its star characters.

Seriously. When they were raceing, I was waiting for sonic to disappear in the blink of an eye. I guess mario runs the same speed as sonic now. kidding
O_O

Hopefully.

But seriously, when I hear there was a game between sonic and mario, I was hoping for an all out battle royal that will finally settle all fan boys argument of who is better. Instead, we get the olympics. I'm not really looking forward to this game at the moment.

pssst, they made 'em fight in the olympics just to give Sonic a chance

there's no fan argument, just a group of Sega fans who still think Sonic has better games than Mario

Why wouldn't Sonic have a chance against Mario in a fight? We're not comparing the games here, we've comparing the characters.

The real question is how the hell is Mario supposed to be keeping up with Sonic in a foot race?

The real question is how the hell is Mario supposed to be keeping up with Sonic in a foot race?

We can only assume that Sonic is being handicapped to give the other racers a chance. It's the only thing that makes sense.

Also, regardless of whose games are batter, in a straight out no-restrictions fight Sonic would win.

It's nerd crap and I really don't care, but let's be serious here.

yes, you both are right, Sonic should annihilate Mario and the others in a foot race...but then Mario should do the same as high jumper and obstacles. I believe game will feature slight better stats in some disciplines for the characters, but not that much otherwise it would be pointless

Blah, Super Mario World 2 was AWFUL, and I *loved* Sonic for the gamegear.

But yeah... they both have their good points and bad points. For example, Sonic games tend to be more fast-paced and explosive, whereas Mario games are more colorful and feature more creative character designs. I could see how one could like a series more than the other, but really, they're both good in their own right.

A good crossover game is wasted just to sell the Olympics, which nobody sees anymore due to the nightmare fuel mascots (http://deadspin.com/search/Nightmare%20Fuel/)and all.

I have the feeling this game will be huge in Asia..and if it turns out to be good (there's no reason to doubt it) I can see it becoming a huge success

Whether they are better is debatable, I guess, but I enjoyed the Sonic games more. I've never really been into the Mario games (SMB2 is one of my favorites, crazily enough).

But, yeah, all of the Sonic characters should kill in a footrace. I expect Peach to take everyone in the high/long jump, though.

umm... in sonic, there are times you can launch off a ramp and clear 50% of a stage. mario needs capes and racoon tails to do that. which is a good way to explain how mario characters can be on par with sonic in any category. he's got powerups. just create a new purple speed mushroom or something...
either way, it should be a fun game. brings back memories of nintendo olympics for NES where there was the pad thing you put on the floor and could run on, or jump on and it would control you're little guy on the tv...

it's not even debatable, only the design in SMW is enough to kick the first Sonic game to oblivion and beyond. But like I said everyone has opinions. Is there someone who thinks the Sonic games are better than the Mario platforms? It's a free world after all

about the game, I'd really want to meet the guy who will pick Eggman as a character..I mean, unless he doesn't have some super-incredible skills of course

amy's got to be more useless than Eggman.

d'uh, eye-popping (for the time) Mode 7 rotations; entire sections of stages moving, creating a shifting pathway; moving paths through static obstacles with forced scrolling; stages ending in different exits depending on how long it took you to get through them; mysterious keyholes that forced you to search entire stages for keys; running round in circles, lost in the Forest of Illusion; the fantastic Sunken Ghost Ship, harking back to Mario 3; hidden subquests, like the Fortresses, the Star Road which was five ultra-tough hidden exits from the regular world leading to a hidden section of map with just five stages, each with a regular exit and a hidden exit. And I could go on

the Sonic games, expecially 2, had excellent level design..but having played and loved both I can't really say Sonic has better games than Mario. I like to think it's a objective statement, but then again everyone has opinions and they all have to be accepted

Black Atom

I get that. No doubt, the Mario games are probably "deeper" games, but I'm not sure that means they're funner. (That's not a word but, ah well). In fact, I sorta prefer the straighforwardness of the Sonic games, so it's really just a preference deal.

Although, the Sonic Adventure games have some of the best and (if not THE best) most innovative 3D level design I've ever seen. Just awesome stuff.

Thorlief

the fact they're funnier or not depends upon the player. Some guys think Mario games suck no matter how objectively good they are, and some guys think the Sonic games suck for the same reasons. Some prefer fast paced running and obstacles and some prefer top notch platforming. I'm not even sure they're in the same category..but that said, if you have fun with a game that's all it matters (for example, I had a lot of fun with Dragon's Lair for the GB..and the common opinion is it was a suckage game-which was probably true, lol-)

isnt the super nintendo more superior to the sega megadrive anyway?
released later and all that, better graphical display.

i think the speed and gameplay of sonic is way better than super mario world and super mario world 2 is really targeted for kids so i lost interest in that when i was about 13 but i still play sonic 2 and sonic 3 regularly and enjoy them.
its all based on opinions but i think sonic definatly has mario beat, even with sonic adventure and sonic adventure 2.
compare sonic adventure 2 or hell even sonic adventure or hell even sonic on the sega saturn to mario sunshine.
maybe sega saturn sonic is an exaggeration heh.

mario 64 will always be a classic though.

No one has ever said this is the ONLY Mario/Sonic game we ever will see. My hunch is this is made to test the waters while the developers work on an action game, which would require much longer development time.

If that is the case, this could kick start a whole trend of intercompany crossover games. Maybe someday we will see a game which features Master Chief, and Solid Snake have a big shoot out.

Snake's already been in both Xbox and crossover games. I wouldn't see that as comepletly unlikely. Honestly, given the mutual wankfest between the two companies in an attempt to PR Sony out of the top slot, I wouldn't be entirely surprised to see Chief in Smash Bros.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be surprised like crazy. But there'd be a tiny part of me that would go huh, that makes a certain kind of sense, I guess.

It looks like they are going to kick Sony out of the top slot this time around. Also, I would love to see the chief sticky grenade Link, justfor laughts.
