Wow, Shadowpact 17 was great to say the least. Definately one people should try out. You get zombies, magic, wonderful art by Braithwaite, a dude popping out of another guys head...just...possibly the best issue the series has had yet. I don't understand why people dislike it's series. It's definately improved since the opening arc, and if there were doubters or people thinking of picking up this series, this is definately the issue you want to pick up.

Is Matt Sturges the official writer of the book now, or is he just filling in?

Probably just filling in. He works with Willingham on JACK OF FABLES, so perhaps he'll be the official fill-in whenever Bill's busy with other projects?

Yeah, I imagine Willingham is really busy with Salvation Run. Jack of Fables is great, so I've got no problem with Sturges as the substitute.

According to Matt Sturges on the Fabletown board (http://fabletown.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1966&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=12) he is taking over as the regular writer.

This was the second issue I picked up of Shadowpact (16 was the first), and I think it will be the last.
On an individual panel basis, the art was nice enough; sequentially, I don't think it worked. The colours felt muddy at times and the panels blended together in my eyes.
As for the story, I picked up the issue based on two things: 1) I enjoyed the last issue; 2) I wanted to read about zombies in Gotham. What I got was a couple of pages with zombies in it (allegedly -- they could have been Kobra thugs or brainwashed civilians) and a the rest of the book dedicated to subplots that didn't hold my interest.
For people who're already following the comic, I'm sure the subplots were engrossing, and more power to you. But as a casual reader, I would have liked some plot to go along with all the sub-. :) It felt like the emphasis was backwards.
