I was reading Gamma Corp issue 3 today and I thought I would raise a question that maybe the rest of you can shed light on.

Now this comic censors some of the swearing inside some words are F'this or F'ing that and you can see that by the conext of the dialouge.
However some pieces of dialouge look strange when censored....for instance "...I have Johnson. A Wendigo might as well be a #$%^ French poodle at this point."

so what could go in the censored bit...fuck,shit,bitch,wank...???...well no and the only term I could think of was Damn.

It's a guess but ethier Nathan Crosby is censoring the word Damn or Frank Tieri the writer is doing it.
I don't recall Marvel having a policy on censoring the word dman...but then I could be wrong.

The thing is if the word is being bleeped out then why is the word Hell and piss in the comic book none of it makes sense.

The number of typewriter symbols doesn't necessarily have to equal the number of letters. And writing *$^%ing just looks odd. I mean, you can do it, but it's odd. Just use the &^#$ in place of a random swear, regardless of how long it is. It's a good rule of thumb, because really, no rule of thumb exists.

That's what it is see the problem is I am from the school of thought that every character that replaces a letter should equal the amount of letter(s) used.
See to me that's just incoherent because the character could be saying f'ing something and it would read as "...I wanted %$^ cheese burger...".

Ah well.

I've noticed in quite a few comics, the symbols $#!+ get used a lot.

Think about what cuss word that resembles when written out by hand.......

DONT TELL ME MY MESSAGE IS TOO SHORTBest post so far.

As far as cencorship, Marvel really should stop dancing around the dialogue and start using the words they intend to use. I mean, every series doesn't have to be like "The Boys" or anything, but on that rare occasion something happens that is significant enough to warrant a curse, by all means, show it.

Lets face it, Marvel readership is largely 16+, and what 16+ year olds among us can't fill in the word with our imagination anyway? That being the case, what are Marvel afraid of?

There is a Marvel Adventures line geared toward kids that I completely agree should be censored and %$#&-ed, but the main line is so geared toward adults, why bother anymore?

Annihilation Conquest Star-Lord features many 'farking's.
being Australian, that's kinda how we pronounce 'fucking'. probably the Brits, too. so i was surprised to see this allowed.

pleasantly surprised.

i like my comic characters to be believable. i like them swearing when it calls for it. for instance, i dig the fact that Bendis' New Avengers are going through a real rough mind-fucking at the moment. so i enjoy seeing the various @%*&'s being muttered in frustration.

BUT what i especially enjoy is (i believe Giffen) writing Star-Lord pushing the envelope and giving our eyes and imaginations a rest when it comes to facing *%^@&^% and just plain ol' typing 'farking'.

(then again, i dunno why i enjoy it that much. Meet The Fockers didnt get censored, and it's practically the same. so just ignore this post :D)

Check out Avengers: The Initiative for some over the top usage of censor-words. It just gets absurd when Gyrich comes on page and starts laying it down.

Honestly, I can appreciate a little realism in the dialogue now and again, but I like my writers to be a bit more creative than just every other word as f-this. It's different also when you're reading it; a little goes a long way. I guess it just comes down to the book you're writing, but too often it's used as a crutch.

That belt buckle is awesome. Tell me that Rick Jones is not into the gay cruising scene.
