I have the Marvels hardcover edition, and I'm looking for something for the DCU. I'm trying to think of a collection that will sum up the DCU's history. An essential story that encommpasses many characters. But I am totally drawing a blank and can't think of a thing.

There really isn't a DC equivalent to Marvels, or at least not something that immediately comes to my mind. I'd say the Absolute edition of New Frontier might work, though. Both the story itself and the art have a sort of timeless feel to them, almost like a throwback to the comics of the 40s and 50s, but without coming across as the least bit cheesy. A lot of characters are covered too, and there's also some pretty interesting political commentary to be found. And with the Absolute edition you get a decent amount of creator insight to go over.
However, both Crisis on Infinite Earths and Kingdom Come sort of fit the bill of all-encompassing as well, at least in terms of the characters covered. Plus, the former is definitely an essential storyline to the DCU. Or, you could always wait for the recently finished Justice series to be collected, but I didn't find it to be quite as powerful as any of the aforementioned stories. It's a fun read read all the same, though, and does have character dossiers, so if you're looking for that sort of thing, it has you covered.
Hope this helps.

The New Frontier looks interesting, I'm mostly looking for some that really shows how the DCU shines as a whole as MARVELS seemed to do for Marvel. IMO.

I think Crisis On Infinite Earths would work great, especially if you're trying to find something that makes all the heroes shine. Kingdom Come...eh, that can be the opposite for the most part up until the end.
I did particularly like the recent JUSTICE story by Krueger and Ross. Might check that out as well.
