View Full Version : How much did you love Toad's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants?

This is one group that just doesn't get the credit/attention that they really deserve. IMO, the only thing this group was missing was Avalanche(which was remedied by X-Men annual 2), possibly another female member of the group and some more development instead of being dropped into obscurity.

I mean, under Fabian, PAD and others, they even re-made Toad from a Mags lackey to an actual credible threat! Phantazia was probably the most interesting character to come out of any brotherhood incarnation since, and I'll admit back when I was 11 I loved the pretty Liefeld art!

So, here's the thread to comment, and gush your LOVE for this underrated group of awesomeness rolled up into this lil thread!

I love you!!! Pyro is, like my favorite X-baddie of all time! I just love him to bits! But if/when he does come back, he needs to hook back up with Avalanche, because they're like PB&J. They just belong together!

TBoEM never got enough play or focused direction in the books for me to become overly involved in their story.

Considering their membership roster, however, the team could represent a formidable threat to many X-Teams (current or early 90s). Each member alone was a threat to some degree--Toad was pretty insane & God only knows what Phantazia was hiding under that purple cloak--I wondered if she even had arms or a body at times.

@Dag:: if they resurfaced & you wanted that possible additional female Martinque Mastermind may work.

TBoEM appeared in the very first comic I picked up (the fantastic throw away X-Men Annual 2...which also covered osbscure wonders such as Revanche & Mr. Jonathan "I'm an omega threat baddie...be scared!" Chambers aka Empyrean--what a one hit wonder, huh?).

Sketchers! I love that annual! That one, and annual #3 are probably the two greatest annuals I have ever read in my life! I was really hoping we'd have seen more of Empyrian! It's too bad all these one note baddies that were introduced that year in the annuals were pretty much never touched upon again. He really was interesting, especially with him pwning Gyrich at the end of the issue threatening to tell on him to Oprah!

I'd have loved to see Martinique join this lil group! She'd add so much sass and much needed feminine touch to this group.

I'd really love to see Toad on an X-team finally... maybe he could replace Juggs as the "reformed guy" on Cornell's Excalibur? At least he's british...

And what happened to Phantazia? Wasn't she in some key role during HOM? Where'd she end up?

She was on Genosha defending Our King. She was last seen in a loony bin mumbling "House Of M...House Of M..."

I love love LOVE Phantazia, everyone should know this as I started the FIRST PHANTAZIA WEBSITE EVER in like 1999 at the mere age of 14.

Pyro was great during Toad's Brotherhood stint, and I loved X-Men Annual #2 even though it meant Pyro was going to die. I'd totally support a PyroxAvalanche romance. Or a PyroxPhantazia romance (like it was hinted at in AoA).

Toad, I'm never all that impressed with.

Blob is the same ol' lovable guy.

Sauron is lame.

As much as I loved the issues with this Brotherhood in them, I wouldn't want to see these five team up again. Toad's not a bad leader, but the mere idea of him leading a formidable team is laughable at best. I'd rather see a new Brotherhood, maybe with Toad in it, but with Phantazia and Pyro, and definitely Avalanche.

Awww...that's reason enough to vote for her!

Phantazia, Blob, Pyro, and Martinique should totally bring the Brotherhood back. Too bad half of them is DEPOWERED BITCHES GRRR.

Toad doesn't work as a good guy...well, he did try after all and it might help if the heroes he tries to show how good he is show him some respect (Spider-man sure didn't)

Toad, I'm never all that impressed with.

That' just because he's not written well. Toad has come along way since early appearences and never gets the respect he deserves by writers or in the comics themselves.

He's a electronics genious after learning it all on...that world he was stuck on and can build complex machinery. He's a more accomplished fighter then most the X-men. But none of this is ever mentioned about. He's just Toad, guy who has tongue and looks a bit gross.

He han't been written well in a while and we've yet to have a Toad that shows him for who he really is. His small appearences in 198 did well but he was more of a background character then the others.

Toad is lame IMO.
Show some respect.

Sauron was an odd fit. i never quite understood that one; him not being a mutant. my favorite was Frank Bohannon aka Commando. i was so excited when he returned; having been use to him as the old guy in the red costume. but, yeah, Pyro needs to come back.

YAY! Phantazia and Pyro are tied! My top two favorites!!! Now we just need Phantazia to be repowered, and Pyro to come back from the dead and we'll have a dream team made in heaven!

That's one of the things that always confused me about the Acolytes when I first started reading X-Men comics. They were all using their last names instead of codenames, but it was never really stated in any of the comics. So, I thought they were really obscure codenames that I didn't understand. I think I once looked up "Unuscione" to try and figure out what it meant. Frenzy is a much cooler nom du guerre than Cargill.

Anyway, yeah, I thought the early '90s Brotherhood was pretty cool. Toad was just so creepy. He seemed like this little, grinning nutcase who was always plotting something.

Unuscione = Child of Unus and, yeah, it doesn't really make any sense. :)
i kind of like Toad's new look and attitude. he seems to have grown up a little.

According to Marvel Directory Unus's full name is Angelo Unuscione which he later changed to Gunther Bain.

i know. he's one of my favorite characters. what i'm saying is that he probably wasn't married to Carmella's mother. i think she basically adopted that name.
