I was wondering, Nightwing is what I consider an almost iconic character. He was one of the earlier superheroes and the first sidekick. But he might never get a good chance to have a permanent role in the JLA because he is in the shadow of one of DC's big three. The same deal goes to Supergirl, though I dunno if she can be as much an icon aside from the name.
So, are there any other charcters in DC that you feel has an almost iconic presence or history but may never be given a bigger role for whatever reason?

The problem with NW is that too many people still associate him with Robin. In fact, if you try to describe NW to someone not real familiar with comics, he is described as Robin-Grown-Up.
I think everytime DC gets close to a iconic character, they make a change-- case in point, the Flash tradition and the GL tradition.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I mean towards Grant Morrison's end of his JLA run, his transformation from rookie to a serius hero was complete and it sure was a splendid sight to see. Case in point, JLA #39, Kyle's ring not functioning and he meets up with other heroes including Guy -
Guy - Heard you broke the ring, kid. "The artist formetly known as Green Lantern" huh? Leave it to the professionals next time ....
Kyle - Yeah, sure. Guy you are good in a fight, right? I need some voluteers for some upper atomosfere work. Anybody got any questions, try looking up. I'm JLA, Guy. We ARE the professionals.
That was purely iconic. Too bad Dc wanted to capitalize on John Stewards cartoon popularity and replace Kyle with him much later during Joe Kelly's run. Ah well, John's great too.
I really would like to see all the almost icons in a team book together written by some awesome writer like Morrison.

In order to be truely iconic, Nightwing would have to have a rogues gallery all his own that's as identifiable as him. Maybe three villians that tangle with him exclusively and can be identified as Nightwing's villians. He also need several well known storylines with some critical accalim. Finally, in order for him to truely be out of Batman's shadow, he'rs got to outwit ol' bats at least once to tuely prove himself to everyone that he's grown up.

Supergirl needs the same treatment, except currently, she needs a commited writer who can actually develop her character and give her a supporting cast and rogues gallery thats her own. A good writer that will stick by her for atleast 2-3 years to lay the foundations for the character.

I hate the word " iconic " when it comes to comics.
Because " iconic " is a nonsense words that's lost all meanings.

Dick Grayson will never be an icon.
The adult Robin of Earth 2 , now he's an icon. ;)

Or maybe Deathwing , now he's a real badass.
