Hi all.
Just throwing out some feelers to see who is interested in doing another "31 days of Halloween" thread. Also to give anyone with Netflix queues ample time to build up for next month.
For those of you who are new, here's the first thread (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=146152&highlight=days+Halloween).
The rules are simple. Watch a horror movie a day and post a review of the movie. Post as many as you can.
Give a shoutout if your interested and maybe share a suggestion or two to make the thread better.
Posters? Trailers? Maybe themes? What do you think?
Thank you and Terror be with you.

Hey Royal, thanks for posting this! I was going to resurrect in some capacity, although, I'm NOT gonna be able to watch 1 per day - this October is gonna be a busy month for me. But the netflix queue is primed and I'm certainly gonna watch as many as i can.

Not a problem.
Can't wait to see what everyone brings.
Watch Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things & Return of the Living Dead as a sort of double feature; one has a band of actors in hippie garb; whereas, the other has the punk rocker motif. Both are black comedies.

I know I won't get anywhere near 31, but I've got quite a few horror flicks on DVD that I haven't watched recently, or at all. There are movies like Near Dark and Dagon that I've been meaning to rent for a long time, this will finally give the reason make a point of doing so.
Old b-movies especially tend to have those hilariously cheesy posters, if anyone has a pic, it's worth including.
As for themes, maybe each week could have its own theme. Like, say, monster week, ghost week, slasher week? Or perhaps some intrepid and devoted posters could dedicate themselves exclusively to one type of horror: all vampire movies, all J-horror, etc...
Easy for me to say of course, since I don't have Netflix or On Demand.

I don't know about a division of labor per se, but I plan to participate... I'll mainly be dining on old Karloff and Lugosi flicks, so I can certainly report the results of those experiments.

An American Werewolf in London & The Howling make for a good double feature. I'm not a fan of the recent Werewolf films or even the 1990's Werewolf movies. There's too much CGI & not enough story.
The old black & white films with the classic horror monsters would be good to watch together such as the original Bela Lugosi's Dracula, the first Lon Cheney Jr. Wolfman, The Mummy, & Frankenstein, & Bride of Frankenstein.
The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari, Metropolis, & the original silent film Phantom of the Opera starring Lon Cheney are good too.

I like watching the 1922 version! I try to watch that every year. Along with Edison's 1911 Frankenstein, even though I would hardly call that a horror movie by today's standards.

Anyone else have those great Universal collections that came out a few years ago? I got the Dracula series and it's fantastic, especially because it includes Dracula's Daughter and Dracula Spanish version.

Both movies that I love (especially The Howling with its genuine well-paced thrills), but I wanna see and go over what else has been done with the genre.
I've got thus far:
AWiL
The Howling
The Howling II: Your Sister is a Werewolf (yes, utterly horrible but such fun!)
Silver Bullet
Wolfen (reviewed last year, was that you Royal?)
The Werewolf twins movie - what was that? I saw it but didn't care for it much
Bad Moon
The Lon Chaney features
Dog Soldiers
and dammit why won't they release The Beast Must Die on DVD already???!!!

Oh yeah. I guess I can wait. Looks like a comedy tonight for me then.:)
1980's The Children is good horror. A nuclear plant leaks a strange gas while a school bus drives into the smog (the adults are immune to the toxin); the children turn into monsters who's hug is lethal (they exude the gas from their pours of skin & slowly burn the victims to death).
The Blob might be good, but I only recommed the Steve McQueen original as opposed to the 1988 remake.
The Stuff is a good mix of horror & comedy about sentient "ice cream." It's like an extended story of The Twilight Zone.

ToT wasn't really about a haunted house though, was it? her "kid" came back from the dead but that was as a demon. it's very commercial but i didn't mind that remake movie 'The Haunting' with Owen Wilson. it had a decent budget and cast.
or how about 'The Changeling' with George C Scott?

Trilogy of Terror sets a mood with Karen Black. The house becomes a prison considering the final tale about the Zunni doll. Burnt Offerings is very much about a haunted house that "feeds" off the deaths of others.

what was it like? it was like shaving with a cheese grater. it was like drinking pool water after adult swim. it was like seeing your parents make babies while listening to Melissa Etheridge. if i can do one good deed in this life it would be to stop you from renting this movie. don't waste your money on Snoop Dog's Hood of Horror either. they needed a bigger budget/stronger wraparound story.

Halloween is essential, but the sequels are just get more & more awful.
Consider the first A Nightmare on Elm Street, the original Friday the 13th, & Dressed to Kill for the slasher genre instead of substandard Halloween sequels.

My dream this Halloween season is to find Spellbinder, starring a very hot Kelly Preston (aka Mrs. John Travolta). It's rumored that Travolta bought the DVD rights and they won't allow it to be released in the US. This movie is also lauded by evangelical preacher and anti-D&D 'satanic panic' supporter Bob Larson. Pretty ironic throughout.

yeah, i agree. the original Friday the 13th was nothing to write home about. if i had to choose a favorite from that series, it would be the (can't remember off the top of my head) one where the beginning is a spoof of Bond movies. i think it was called jason lives. that one was fun in a goofy way. Jason has always been kind of over-the-top (especially in Jason X).
Child's Play is creepy & good.
Hellraiser & Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 are essential.
The original Children of the Damned is good instead of the 1994 John Carpenter remake; however, John Carpenter's The Thing is superior than the original The Thing from Another World because Carpenter's version remains true to the story source, "Who Goes There."
For satire, I recommend Love At First Bite, Saturday the 14th, The Monster Squad, & The Midnight Hour.

great atmosphere in that movie. i was kind of disappointed by some of the actions certain characters took in the film. but, yeah, it was as creepy and claustrophobic as advertised.
i second his satire recommendations (haven't seen Midnight Hour, though). avoid Saturday the 14th Strikes Back, though.
The Midnight Hour is a Halloween network film which came out in the fall of 1985. The teens cause the dead to rise from the graves as zombies, one powerful witch (related to the main character), & a cheerleader stuck in the 1950's who is also the key to reversing the spell. The Wolfman comes back too. Levar Burton becomes a real vampire. It's a real good movie. I think the network executives cooked this movie up due to success of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video...

I happen to like Carl Theodor Dreyer's Vampyr. Sure its not as creepy as the Murneau Nosferatu, but its a solid vampire film.
Also Dr. Mabuse, if you want to call that a horror film.
As for something a bit more modern, I like random werewolf films like Dog Soldiers and Ginger Snaps.

i'd recommend both werewolf movies. Dog Soldiers was good mindless fun (kind of a guy movie). and Ginger Snaps was a great twist on your average coming of age story. the 2 actresses had good chemistry. the gore was sufficient. can't say that i enjoyed Gingersnaps 2 or 3 though. but it's hard to make a good werewolf movie. even harder to make a scary vampire movie. i hate when they introduce a romantic element into either.

It's just a collection of Cerda's short films. You got Aftermath then Genesis, about a sculpter who loses his wife in a car crash and decides to make a sculpture of her, and then The Awakening.

My recomendations and the movies that I'm planning on watching this Halloween season are:
The Evil Dead Trilogy
Hellraiser/ Hellbound:Hellraiser 2
Night of the Demons (classic 80's horror)
Halloween/ Halloween 2/ Halloween 4:The Return of Micheal Myers (these three make a nice trilogy in the Halloween series)
Frankenstien (1931)
Jack the Ripper (1988 tv-movie starring Micheal Caine)
A Nightmare on Elm st.
Friday the 13th
The Romero Dead Saga (Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead and Land of the Dead)
Ghostbusters
BeetleJuice
And although they aren't horror movies it's just Halloween without Garfield's Halloween Adventure and the immortal classic It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown.

If you loved zombie movies , you can't really go wrong with Flight of the living dead , a lesser known zombie movie that is actually pretty good.

There's also Dead and Breakfast , a quirky zombie horror comedy

There's "Dead end" , a little known creepy movie with some funny lines and a great atmosphere.

If you don't mind really hokey cheesy low budget werewolf movie , you can try "Big Bad Wolf". The wise cracking horny werewolf is hilarious while he's slaughtering all the teenagers.

i bought Big Bad Wolf. it was cheesy but entertaining enough. i really wanted to beat the protagonist up for being such a wuss through most of the movie.
Christine, Carrie (original), & Children of the Corn are good Stephen King novels turned into great films.

Oh no, not The Giant Behemoth!
That thing is boring as hell.

I just watched Luther the Geek and was very disappointed in the ending. It was kind of slow moving at times, but I did enjoy Luther's rooster noises near the end.

My rough plan
That's an interesting interpolation of Serling, Hitchcock and Kolchak. I'll be watching a few episodes of The Veil, a Karloff hosted anthology series. While not as good as his Thriller series, some of the episodes were quite effective.

Howaboot good haunted house movies?
I myslef dont like the sub-genre all that much, but one I do love is The Legend of Hell House, with Roddy McDowall.
Very good.
I consider that one to be the King of Haunted House movies... I rank it just above The Haunting. Great stuff.
A few Tobe Hooper films come to mind such as the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Poltergeist & Lifeforce.
1978's Pirahna (http://youtube.com/watch?v=2NmkXCSewdA) & 1975's JAWS (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ucMLFO6TsFM) would be a good movie combination...

Only if you want to be bored to tears.
IMHO, Pirahna enjoys a grossly overinflated reputation. It isnt even on the same plane of exsistance as Jaws.

Different strokes for different folks. The two films are not meant to be compared; they are two separate distinct films. When I first saw Pirahna on television, it scare me to death. It's a good film because there's equal parts humor & horror.

I was going to do this last year, but ended up not doing it for whatever reason, I can't remember.
This year I think I'll go for it.
I no longer subscribe to NetFlix, but I have Digital Cable with OnDemand which includes FearNet, the horror channel that's not really a channel, plus its October so I should have no trouble finding flicks to watch.

i second his satire recommendations (haven't seen Midnight Hour, though). avoid Saturday the 14th Strikes Back, though.
anyone have recommendations for good horror anthologies? i have the following already in my collection...
The House that Dripped Blood
Tales From the Darkside
Tales from the Crypt (original and the complete tv series)
Twilight Zone
After Midnight
The Willies
Tales of the Unexpected
Campfire Tales
Asylum
Trilogy of Terror 1 & 2
Terror Tract
Grim Prairie Tales
&
Nightmares
Tales From the Darkside, I assume you mean the movie. I wonder if the series is available on DVD, too bad if its not.
I'm not sure what their availability is, but a few other TV horror anthologies to look out for are: The Hitchhiker, Monsters and The Ray Bradbury Theater. Also, more recently, Showtime's Masters of Horror. I think the first season of that is available on DVD, but I could be wrong.
Also, how do you not have either of the Creepshow movies. The second's not so good but the first one's a classic!
