This would have been an amazing cover, I wonder what his problem was with this pice?

Maybe the tone of the story shifted so that it no longer fit? That's a pretty calm (although ominous) cover. Darkness Calls is pretty action-packed. I'm pretty sure that isn't the Baba Yaga, and if it's not her then who is it? Maybe it's whoever is in the box from the bottom of the well? Or is it just a witch from the first issue?
For others who may be curious, here's the auction (http://cgi.ebay.com/HELLBOY-Darkness-Original-Cover-Art-Page-Mike-Mignola_W0QQitemZ270164281902QQihZ017QQcategoryZ97 2QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem).

Holy high bid Batman.
It is a beautiful piece but as Maija pointed out it doesn't really seem to fit the overall tone of the series to me. That would make an awesome SDCC print though! :D I really wish I had a grand laying around. I really like it.

That would make an awesome SDCC print.
Now that would have been a pretty thing! I certainly would have purchased a copy were it offered as such.

Is it me or has Mignola used the same village backdrop in a majority of Darkness Calls pics...

Wow, this looks awesome! I love the frayed edges of the (troll's?) cloak.
