After trading in my defective 360 for a new one at Best Buy due to my warranty, I got a $114 store credit note, because when I originaly bought my console I paid $499 and it's $399 now. I was thinking of using it on a PS2, just so I could play all the games that I missed out on. Or maybe a DS, so that I could have a mobile gaming console. I'm even thinking of putting it towards a new Wii, if there were any available.
Any suggestions?

Ps2 would be my choice. If nothing else for the sheer amount of games you can play on it, especially when you consider it plays ps1 games also. It has the majority of modern day classics on it for any system around. Most of the games are easily avaible and cheap to. You can get the same type of games you find on DS on here also, the older school looking types. The price alone of a WII system can get you a brand new ps2 and about 8 good games.
Yes a DS is a good system but the amount of must have original games is a bit limited. Dont get me wrong, a DS would be a 2nd choice here but when your doing all your gaming on a system this just leaves you with games that have limited abilities. Like say you want to play a big name game like metal gear or resident evil, your stuck with severly scaled downed versions that you cant buy in stores anymore and have to get used. The DS library comes and goes quickly, aside from a mario game or something they arent real common 6 months after release, unless it really sucks and doesnt sell. But a ps2 and a DS are the same price new, so spending the same means are you willing to have small versions of most games and a library thats 1/50th the size of the other just so you can carry it with you?
The wii is still just a novelty at this point, I have fun with mine but its only really playing mini games on it and such. Aside from metroid, super paper mario (which I havent played) I havent seen any games that are must haves. There a couple good ones but still not enough to warrant buying one to me. Once I got over the intial coolness it was really lacking in real games outside of just a couple. I played with it maybe 10 hours total since I got it a month ago. Maybe when more single player type games start coming out Ill enjoy it more. But only a few "real" single player are worth getting, the rest are gimmicks like the carnival games one or just bad ports of games on everyother system like god father.

I'd suggest you to pick a DS, its library stomps everything in this generation and its going to kick arse in the next months as well.
excellent games already available: two Castlevania games, the only good Sonic games in years, Mario Bros, the awesome Phoenix Wright serie, the online FPS Metroid Hunters, Brain Training, Wario Touched, the old school shooter Nanostray, Mario Kart online, Hotel Dusk, great puzzle games like Planet puzzle league, Picross, Meteos and Tetris DS online, the fantastic Advance Wars: Dual Strike, both Ouendan and Elite Beat Agents, Partners in Time, Animal Crossing, Tony Hawk, Worms 2, Viewtiful Joe, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, Age of empires...and I'm sure I'm forgetting something here
upcoming must have titles: Final Fantasy IV, Ninja Gaiden, Zelda, Dragon Quest IX, Contra 4, a new Castlevania, Advance Wars DS 2, Final Fantasy Chronicles, FF: Revenant Wings, Call of duty 4...and so on
not counting, obviously, the retrocompatibility with all the GBA games
obviously, if you're more a Sony guy go for a PS2 but listen to me: start saving your money for a DS, it's the hottest piece of hardware of the last years

Like above, PS2 would be my recommendation. You can get them cheaper then the DS in the UK. (no idea about the US). Game library alone should pull you in. And many games coming out for the DS and the Wii have versions on the PS2 already.
And all the games are cheaper, even the new ones.
Well, unless you want to wave your hand in front of a TV or game on the go.

It really depends on what you like. I get more mileage, personally, out of my DS than PS2 because I rarely have more than 2+ hours to commit to video games at any one time. Most DS games are easy to pick up and play and I dig that but that might not be important to you. But really, neither has a shortage of awesome games. My advice is to go to the place you normally purchase games or look online and see which has more games that look interesting to you.
While some people are unaware of this, it's a scientifically proven fact that only people who possess a DS are actually human.

I believe that this the correct answer. Seconded whole-heartedly for all the reasons already mentioned.

Seriously get the PS2 (I bought mine this February for $128) that is the best "Bang for your money" system. You are getting high quality games for 19.99 new and even cheaper used. I plan to spend about $200 for this X-mas to totally complete my PS2 games wish list and that's a ass load of games.
I'd get the PS2. Since we got our PS3 I've discovered a ridiculous amount of great games for the PS2 that I completely ignored. Plus, they're usually insanely cheap.
The Wii has some good games and some more on the horizon, but unless you're more of a "party gamer" it'll probably not get alot of use. About the only time ours gets any play is when the wife and I decide to play some Wii bowling.
I've never owned a DS, but I did borrow a buddy's for about a couple weeks. Cook Mama, Mario Kart DS and Phoenix Wright were fun, but not enough to jusitfy that much money.
Is there a reason you aren't considering the PSP Slim?

After considering the DS's library of games compared to that of PS2, I decided to go for the PS2. I got the silver, superslim version. It looks cute next to my Gamecube and 360. I rented Shadow of the Colossus, and that games is tons awesome. I have a list of games I now want to play.

PS3- Graphics.
Wii- Interactivity with the game.
DS- Portability, and the fact that it'll cost the least in addition to your credit.
I'm going to get me a DS on my birthday (for REAL this time!), and I'd probably recommend that. You can now surf the net on it, for example.

surfing the net on the DS isn't really a great experience. The DS Browser is pretty slow, you might very well avoid it

Well, I kinda figured that due to the small size and space on the Browser. However, I'm probably going to get that anyway, seeing that I can get the Net at home for the first time, despite the limitations.
