View Full Version : Keith David: He kicks so much ass.

Mainstream America tends to focus on Denzel Washington as the black actor, the guy everyone wants to bathe in rare oils from the East.
But I'll be damned if I don't enjoy Keith David's work more. This is a list of his accomplishments that I'm aware of:
1. He voiced Goliath (the gargoyle) and Spawn. Convincingly.
The guy's voice is not only memorable but indicative of whatever emotion is necessary for the character in question. It makes me wish that a new cartoon would come out with Keith David doing the voices of all characters, even those of women and children.
2. He completely annihilated every other performance in "Requiem for a Dream."
My friends told me that "Requiem for a Dream" was great. Repeatedly. So as I watched it, realizing that it was a self-important pile of shit with untailored, exaggerated acting and annoying direction, I thought I couldn't make it through. But then Keith David appeared. He restored my faith that day, for it had been a long time since I had seen one actor make a joke out of the rest of the cast.
3. He makes watching an angry crippled man a joy in "Dead Presidents."
"Dead Presidents" already kicks enough ass as it is. After all, it glues four genres together in a linear fashion and features one of the better heist scenes in modern film. But with Keith David limping around and spewing profanity in a serious way that makes you laugh, all of this becomes more awesome.
4. He manages to prevent Kurt Russell from stealing every scene in "The Thing."
What do you have when two of the most underrated actors of all time are scrutinizing each other around a fire in Antarctica, their stares essentially becoming the defining moment of both performances? Kurt Russell and Keith David haunting you for the rest of your life.
5. His cameo in "Dark Blue" carries a unique affect.
Unlike most cameos--mere appearances that are equivalent to first discovering a blender as a child--Keith David's cameo in "Dark Blue" sticks in your mind for the rest of the movie's running time. You keep wondering, "Is Keith David coming back?" He never does.

You mean Daredevil's dad?
If Keith David and David Keith are in the same movie, does reality end?
Although I used to think reality would end if Keith David and Ernie Hudson were in the same movie, and then Congo happened.

His voice alone in those Marine commercials make me want to enlist.
Mainstream America tends to focus on Denzel Washington as the black actor, the guy everyone wants to bathe in rare oils from the East.
Is it so wrong that the image of Denzel bathing in rare Eastern oils made me a pause for a moment? If it wrong, then this man don't ever wanna be right..

Keith David and David Keith DO need to star in a movie together. Doesn't matter the context, they just do.

Keith David was the voice of Al Simmons in the Spawn cartoon, too.
He is very under-rated.

Okay first watch that.
Then watch the cripple fight episode of Southpark.
But David rocks, he makes any film he appears in eminently watchable.

Also, he's been the voice of The Arbiter in Halo 2 & 3. I didn't mind playing Arbiter just for the swank cut scenes.

Coincidentally, I just watched Clockers again last night on cable and then saw this Keith David thread appear today. David was great in that flick too as Andre "the Giant," kicking Mekhi Phifer's ass while simultaneously giving him a history lesson about Rosa Parks. :D

The Fight is over-rated. They Live is a good movie, but that fight scene is about ten minutes too long. It's a showcase of nearly everything dumb about the simulated fights from professional wrestling.

Classic- that whole scene set the movie up for me. As soon as he answered the door I knew 'Mary was gonna be greatness. I think I'm gonna go watch it again..

You would have to have a serious mental health condition to think your going to view a realistic treatise on hand to hand combat in They Live.
Its a sci-fi movie with monsters from outer space. What are you expecting?

He came THIS close to stealing a movie from Kurt Russell, which is a feat beyond imaginationing.
I thought his voice work as Goliath was stellar, and he's always a treat when he pops up on a documentary.

No small feat when you consider that Kurt Russel's character in The Thing is perhaps the most badass one he's ever done.

There really should be a sequel, because those two guys were just too ornery to freeze. Months later, a rescue chopper arrives and they're still sitting there all pissed-off and grizzled, demanding coffee.

Totally. The master chief almost felt dull after playing as the Arbiter. I mean invisibility and frikkin' laser swords.
And as has already been said, he was excellent in Platoon and along with Dame Judy actually made the Chronicles of Riddick bearable.

Fallout had an impressive cast of voice actors, including Keith David, Richard Dean Anderson, and Ron Perlman. I finally picked up this game recently and have been playing intermittently.

I found the best way to truly enjoy the first game is to get a character editor and give four ranks of pathfinder. Otherwise it's too easy to use up your time limit looking for all the goodies.

Keith David invented Method Acting in a 1954 Christmas Pageant in which he played the role of God. To this day, he has never broken character.

Speaking as a former professional, the Piper/David fight in They Live is great fun to watch, but it is a TERRIBLE movie fight. It's like a Looney Tunes cartoon broke out in the middle of a fairly "realistic" movie. It's way too long, it has all the believability of a Smackdown Cage Match, the punches and kicks are all long, looping and easily dodge-able, and unlesss the guys have superpowers, they'd be unconcious after the first 20 seconds. It grinds the movie to a halt.
It's a great WWE fight. It's a really bad movie fight scene.
Re: Requiem For a Dream
for it had been a long time since I had seen one actor make a joke out of the rest of the cast.
I loved and praised Requiem for a Dream, and was one of its most ardent supporters in various boards of the day. And even then, I completely agree with you wholeheartedly about Keith David.

There was nothing wrong or offensive about my remark. Just give it a rest.
while he was great as Goliath and Spawn, is he as good as James Earl Jones or Patrick Warburton (who I think is one of the best voice actors in cartoons today)?
