I bought the only copy my local had and I'm glad I did. Packaging it like a coffee table magazine is a nice touch. The style of the book perfectly matches the audience it's aimed at.

I read this last night and was very happy that I bought it. I know this title is going directly to the top of the read pile every month it comes out. This is a great title, and anyone looking for something funny should definitely pick it up. I hope there are a few pages of Los Luchadoritos in every issue.

Read it, have been really enjoying it so far.
I like the mix of stuff, from the one page gags of Professor Furia and Los Luchadoritos, to the more extended adventures of the Luchadores Five, Tequila and Los Tikitis.
Art and story have been pretty much top notch.

That said, if I have two gripes, here they are:

1) At times, it can seem like the comic is just a big advertisement for the designer toys. The creators actually addressed this in the last issue, and I can see what they're getting at, but yeah, it just seems that way from time to time.

2) None of the luchadores in the series seem to be even vaguely worthy of respect. Los Luchadores Five are a half-baked kids' gang with delusions of grandeur, Tequila is a borderline brain-damaged murderous redneck and Los Tikitis are a bunch of half senile old farts on an island somewhere.
I think this is what contributes to point #1. At times, it seems like the creators don't seem to think Lucha Libre is anything more than a silly little kitsch pop culture fad (as opposed to Mexico, where luchadors are highly respected).

It'd be like doing a comic based on Hot Rodding or Chopper Culture, demonstrating a cursory knowledge of the topic and presenting all the characters as incompetents and idiots. You'd start to think that the creators don't really care that much about the culture but are just trying to cash in on the fact that it's trendy amongst the hip kids these days.

This probably seems a little harsher than is meant. There's a lot to be liked in the series, and I wrote a nice review of issue 1 in 'Comics Should Be Good'... (http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2007/09/07/lucha-libre-is-good-or-hoopla-gumbo/_)...but yeah, I just got some nagging concerns there.

lucha is trendy among hip kids these days??

i might share your concerns if other people were portrayed as more than incompetents or idiots. everybody seems to be equally stupid in their little world. characters respect worthyness isn't a factor to me in this book, regardless of whatever their motivations or true feelings for lucha libre might be it's a funny as shit book with pretty cool art and characters.

i think the 1st issue was the best so far, likely because it's a lot of the luchas 5.

Oh yeah, I LOVE Sonambulo.

As for Lucha Libre's hipster cred, it's more of a surface retro thing. Most of these guys wouldn't know Blue Demon from a hole in the ground, but they might own a sticker or a t-shirt with his face on it.

I tried not to come across as too down on the series, because I am still collecting it and hell, I really do dig it, for exactly the same reasons you do. If I wasn't, I'd have dropped it like a turd by now.
Just like I say, I just get these niggling little doubts sometimes while I'm reading it.
