I am new to the Hellboy comics, but really in to it. Could someone please give me a list of the comics that Hellboy is featured in (specifically). Not just mentioned in, but a major part of the story? I have the Darkness Calls series and have ordered The Island series (1 & 2), but can't get enough of Hellboy. I am looking to obtain as many Hellboy comics as I can. Semi-interested in the graphic novels, but not as much as the comics.

Hey helldad...WELCOME!!! Your best bet to get the comics is probably ebay,once and a while someone will sell their whole hellboy collection.Personally though, I think that the trade paperbacks/graphic novels are the way to go.:D

Welcome a-Board! I agree...buy the trades...much less costly for the Hellboy Beginner and you can read the story all at once versus installments.

Get Hellboy: Seed of Destruction. That is the first Hellboy trade paperback, and it's a good starting place.

Thanks all. Are the trade paperbacks the same stories as the comics? I keep seeing references to older issues/enemies/battles in the current comics and have no idea what the hell (no pun intended) they are referring to.

And what about the B.P.R.D. comics? I'm not really into the other BPRD characters as much as Hellboy. Are there specific issues of BPRD that Hellboy plays the major role and not just merely mentioned as subplot?

there are currently 6 trade paper back's out out right now for the main story with a new one "The Troll Witch and Other Stories" coming out the 26th, as well the the two volumes of Hellboy: Weird Tales (it's like fan-fiction with professional writers and artists). there are also two TPB's based off the animated movies (not the actual movies but placed in the universe of the animated movies), though i don't know any thing about them. Here is a list of the TPB's of the main story line.

i also think there is a TPB for a crossover with "Ghost", though i know nothing of that. as for the B.P.R.D. comics, as far as the first volume, they only just menchan Hellboy in flash backs. i haven't read the others.

The graphic novels (also called trade paperbacks, or TPBs) are the same thing as the comics. The graphic novels collect the issues into convenient books. So for example, you can order "The Island" #1 and 2 as separate issues... Or you can buy the graphic novel, "Hellboy Volume 6: Strange Places," and get "The Island" #1 and #2, plus the story that precedes it, "The Third Wish" #1 and #2, as well.

At some point, all six issues of "Darkness Calls" will be collected into its own graphic novel, so that you can read all six issues in one book. Plus, there's always bonus material like story notes from the author, and the artist's sketchbook.

There are also many Hellboy short stories out there. Three of the graphic novels collect the short stories: "Hellboy Volume 3: The Chained Coffin and Others," "Hellboy Volume 4: The Right Hand of Doom," and "Hellboy Volume 7: The Troll Witch and Others." That last one wasn't supposed to come out until October, but some people around here have already found it in stores.

What's cool about the short story collections is there are stories in them that can't be found anywhere else. They're a must-own for the Hellboy fan.

So essentially, just buy all seven volumes of the Hellboy graphic novels (or TPBs, as they're called).
