Haven't played any of the Persona series. (I've been aching to play the first one for about a decade now.)
My contribution to this thread: Fallout and Fallout 2. Play them and meet God.

Just as a warning: while there is no doubt that Fallout kicks supreme ass, there is a learning curve. It might get frustrating for the first couple of hours, but stick with it and you'll experience a very unpredictable, challenging, and entertaining game. I've replayed Fallout 2 several times, and each time it's different. The replay value is extremely high because you can do anything you want (e.g., killing children or being a peacemaker) and those actions determine what you can do in latter parts of the game.
For instance, one time I decided to put all my skill points in my unarmed attacks. I got so strong that I could punch people in the eyes and kill them instantly.
Yeah, you have the option to choose where you want to hit/shoot/stab/etc. enemies; you can cripple them, or take them down a notch with a shot to the crotch. All the while the dialogue screen relays hilarious messages. If you shoot a woman in the groin, it might say something like "You shoot Emma in the groin for 45 HPs. She takes it like a man."

It's on PC only. Hopefully down the road a console will get an anthology of the series or something.

Odin Sphere. It's a wonderful 2D side-scrolling RPG.

Baldurs Gate I and II.
The first real good RPG games to use the D&D system on Windows 95 or higher. I've played them through many times and always find it a great experience.
Heck I liked it so much that my first name ever on CBR before the board relaunch in 2004 was Run Boo Run which only makes sense if you've played the game. There are numerous NPC characters come across, some whom you can control, and one is a brain addled Ranger named Minsc who has a pet hamster named Boo. He says many hilarious things and in the RPG tradition if an NPC gets hurt nearly to the point of death they panic and flee. Minsc would yell the above catch phrase whenever he entered a panic state.

Knights of the Old Republic
such a wonderful game, finely crafted in every aspect, it's the game that made me know and love Bioware
Tales of Symphonia
this blew me away. Over sixty hours of incredible gameplay, excellent story, great graphics / soundtrack, awesome combat system. I often found myself playing it for six hours straight. The best game on the GC and in my opinion, the best game of the last generation

Second the vote for Knights of the Old Republic. Its a great Star Wars RPG. Avoid the KOTOR II though at all costs as it will break your heart. Its a great game and has a great story. But the developers were forced to rush the product to the stores long before it was ready for release so they cut out the ending. Every plot you've become invested in throughout the game is left unresolved and the last couple of hours of the game is just you fighting over and over and over with no plot. And the big bads you face that seemed so menacing throughout the game are utterly anti climactic given the loss of plot at the end.

I'm currently playing Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. It uses the same engine as KOTOR does and is basically the same game only with vampires and a slightly clunkier control system. You get to pick from several different clans of vampire to be and there are five different endings depending on how you play the game and who you ally yourself with.

Yeah , seconded Fallout 1 & 2 although as mentioned , the starting is a bit tedious. Plenty of freedom to do as you please and plenty of options to tinker with your characters. The games are old now but still very much playable.
My RPG recommendation is Lunar : Silver star story & Lunar 2 : Eternal Blue for PS1. very oldschool in-game graphics and gameplay but great story , music & anime cutscenes.

2) TOS is your typical Tales of..game, just with, in my opinion, the best story and the best playability

I'm struggling through Fallout right now. I started with the default guy, but he kept getting owned in shootouts. So I made myself a killer, john woo style, with a 95% in handguns now that he's just third level. But I'm kind of stuck. I keep getting into fights where my guy and his sidekick are outnumbered something like 4:1 odds. We kill a few and then I get whacked, despite my hit points.
Vampire was great, but I still haven't gotten around to finishing the game. The final boss fight is ridiculously hard, it's basically like two back-to-back boss fights with no chance to rest in-between.
Temple of Elemental Evil was awesome, and I've been re-playing that with some of the recent patches making it even more interesting and challenging.

The key to battles in Fallout is finding good body armor as soon as possible. Also, there are a few tricks that will help you not waste battle points. For instance, you can equip a stimpak and use it with two action points, but this is not a good idea in general because one stimpak won't necessarily heal you enough (plus, sometimes stimpaks restore hardly nothing since they heal a random number of hit points within a ten-point-or-so range). Therefore, that means you might have to access your inventory and equip yet another stimpak and then use that, which will cost you an additional 6 action points. The best thing to do when you need to heal is access your inventory with 4 action points, then right click on the stimpaks and click on the upper icon that looks like an open hand. You can keep doing this over and over again until you're fully healed.
They are lots of tricks like this that can help you in Fallout's battles. It just takes time and ingenuity to learn them.
Also, I second Disgaea. I haven't played the second one, however.

I second Tales Of Symphonia. While it was one of only a few Gamecube RPGs, the game was very long and fun from start to finish.
For old school RPGs, I recommend Shining Force II and Phantasy Star IV for the Genesis. Nothing revolutionary, but both have great gameplay. SFII's replay value in particular is endless.
The Fury
09-09-2007, 02:40 PM
And Silmeria too I guess.
Side note and question. Does the stories in Valkyri follow at all from one to the next? Or are they like FFs which are different or maybe Zelda which follow the same idea yet different
Just that it just came out in the UK (yes, 1 whole bloody YEAR after every-bloody- where else).
I've got Rogue Galaxy to play through first...if it arrives.

Silmaria takes place before the original VP, though its a different story with no bearing on the original beyond its based on Norse myth.
In response to the TC, try Nocturne, its made by the same people who did Persona, be warned its a very difficult game and Dante of Devil May Cry is a secret playable character.

One RPG that I think is a great game, that has more room to grow but doesn't do much most the time, is the Pokemon series.
I think it gets overlooked as a "kiddy game" too much due to the cartoon shows and merch.
It's very addicting but the story is usualy ehh.. well actualy now that I start thinking about it I kind of feel that it's great for a handheld game, but there are always better ones. And the only changes made between the different versions are minor, and that as long as people can keep thinking up new "creatures" there will always be a new game. And the game play hasn't changed at all since the first game back in 199#. I dunno I'd say get ruby or saphire, but the new versions aren't anything to go buy a DS so you can play them. It's a bit depressing that I finaly realized that one of the RPGs I like has been the same game for over numerous years but practicaly just different colors and a couple handfuls of new creatures. I'm just surprised that it hasn't become a MMORPG yet.
I'm sad now

I'm with you about Pokemon. It's a true RPG, and a totally addictive one
Golden Sun was one little miracle; it came out for the GBA a few years ago and man, it was one satisfying ride. Technically superb, good story, about 50 hours of gameplay, LOTS of stuff to do and places to visit. A gem.

I think a "tactics" game is more about strategy, such as with FF tac. you could move your characters around and you had to plan ahead. Plus the attacks could only go so far ahead of them.
Where as a regular RPG you can't really move your characters around and you don't have to set up your attacks.

I wish there was a reliable way to play PS1 RPGs. You either have to screw around with emulation -- a process I haven't had much luck with -- or pay collector's price for the actual games. Next to SNES, PS1 had the best RPGs around.

Yeah, a "tactics" game is still an RPG, but of a different style.
Just like how you have a turn based RPG, action RPG, tactics RPG, and an MMO RPG.

A couple more tips for Fallout. You want Ian, but never, under any circumstances, give him a weapon with burst fire. He will kill you. Many times. Second, don't hesitate to run away from any fight. You still get xp for any kills you make. Finally, if you end up in a fight with two groups fighting each other, do nothing. Most of the time you won't get attacked and can loot and leave.

I love rpgs, especially the Final Fantasy games. Im just about to finish Crisis Core and then I'm blowing the dust of Final Fantasy 7 to kind of continue the story, it will put a new spin on the game after seeing what Zack did in Crisis Core. I also want to get the Final Fantasy 4 remake for the DS, because that was the first rpg i ever played on the SNES years ago (unless you count Zelda). I'm curious about Lost Oddysey because it supposed to be sort of an homage to the final fantasy series but my friend told me the load times make it unbearable to play. Can't wait for FF XIII either since its been announced for the XBOX360!

I don't think anyone's mentioned my favorite yet, so I will. If you like Fallout and Baldur's Gate you should really try Planescape: Torment. It's similar in that it's turn-based and from pretty much the same perspective, but it has an deep, offbeat fantasy story, the best I've ever seen in an RPG. It's like playing one of the best fantasy novels you've ever read. The combat isn't the greatest, but the story will keep you going. It's also like Fallout in that you have wide leeway of how you play your character, The Nameless One, and a lot of choices about who he is and what he does.
Oh, and you should also try the Lunar series, which were rereleased on PSX. They have sort of primitive combat systems, but they are simply beautiful games with great stories, big boss fights, lots of pretty anime FMV and likeable and funny characters. Lunar games also have the funniest and coolest townspeople in a JRPG, hands down. You'll want to keep talking to them to hear everything they have to say, instead of running past them.
And if you can find it or afford it you should try the first two Suikoden games. They provide about 108 characters each with different characteristics to collect for an RPG adventure. Why do you need 108? Cause you got to build an army for strategy battles that make up part of the game. The first game has a simple strategy element, while the second one plays a little more like Shining Force. Both have good stories and they have the novel element of allowing you to have your own castle to keep your army at and interact with them.
Another PSX favorite of mine is SaGa Frontier. This game is seven RPG stories in one, although some are better than others. There's a main story for each character and a wealth of sidequests each can take on. I also like the battle system, which is centered around training your characters to learn special skills and then combining them for combination attacks. It's very satisfying to find the formula that lets you cut loose with the full five-person combo and annihilate an enemy.

If you don't have Persona 3 by now you need to smack yourself until it hurts like hell. It won RPG of the year, and before even then I myself and few others on here couldn't stop moaning about how awesome it is. Yes it has its detractors, people who only want pretty spikey haired dudes with insanely large swords with buxom beauties as his girlfriends in their RPGs. Still though if you want a RPG that is as funny as it is interesting as it is educational (to a degree I admit) go out and get Persona 3 Fes. It's only 29.99 and it comes with the original persona 3 game with editional content and a bonus Persona game known as Episode Aigis which continues the aftermath story of the original persona 3 game. So its a huge bargain.
Some other RPG's just in case people didn't mention them.
Breath of Fire 1-4.
Suikoden 1-5
Valkyrie Profile Silmeria
Shin Megumi Tensei: Nocturne
Tales of the Abyss and any Tales of Destiny you can find for the psx.
Neverwinter Night is a awesome game and part 2 is okay to.

I like Lunar and the other games so I added my take on them as an afterthought without checking again to see if they had been mentioned. That's why I started the paragraph with "Oh, and..."
But the one I want to make sure people knew about and I did not see is Planescape.

I'm sad to see no one's mentioned one of my favorite RPGs, Skies of Arcadia.
I played the original Dreamcast version. There was a GameCube version as well. I can't speak to its quality but, well, it's the same game, right?
The only drawback was the punishing random encounter rate, though its possible they addressed that in the GC version.

What are you running Fallout on? I have no trouble at all with XP.

Fallout 2 is a better game than the first one but you need to start somewhere , it can be a bit slow and tedious as i have mentioned at the start but get a few allies in your party , and get level up so you can get the "perks" you want. Plenty to choose from and it should be fun.

And never, ever, give Ian a burst or full auto gun. He is guaranteed to kill you.

I second The Baldurs Gate series. Those were some damn fun games; I especially loved that, in addition to using the quirky NPC's, you could create an entire party of six of your characters if you wanted. Great stuff, all the way from lowly level 1 fighting goblins to level 40 fighting Dragon gods.
Golden Sun was also really cool. I keep praying they make a 3d entry in the series for Wii or something.
Tales of Symphonia, definitely a good one. If you like that, I suggest Tales of the Abyss as well, which in my opinion was slightly better than Symphonia, both in the technical execution of its plot, its characterization, battle system, and the overall presence of its characters (Jade is perhaps the most badass character in a Tales of... game).
Elder Scrolls III and IV are both really good. I'd suggest playing those if you never have; lots of open ended gameplay and you can pretty much be whoever and whatever you want.
Lets see...a game that got panned a little bit when it was released is Secret of Evermore, but I remember being addicted to that little underrated gem.
