The new guitar hero III will have boss battles and Tom Morelo has already let it slip that he will appear in the game as a villian.

Fire up your plastic axe: Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello confirmed to us that he is indeed going to be a character in the upcoming Guitar Hero sequel, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, which comes out in late October. Morello will be one of a few formidable “bosses” that you have to beat to finish the game. Apparently the Rage god is less-than-impressive when it comes to playing Hero in real life, though: “Whenever I play Guitar Hero my opponent always kicks my ass on my own riffs,” he told us. “It’s embarrassing. Now that I’m actually in the game I hope the digital me will win once in a while!”
-- Rolling Stone
But, we can never beat morelo, our guitar control doesn't give us the ability to develop adaquete skill at the instrument, and amazing skill at making silly noises!!!

man, I'm very torn between this and Rock Band. You know, RB has a drum freaking set

I don't think that the announced tracklist has a song by either Rage or Audioslave, so I guess the track you will be battling Morello on is a mystery.
Any thoughts?
We already had Killing in the Name and Cochise. Maybe Guerilla Radio?

My suggestion would be to get one, then get the other when the price goes down/used copies are available. More to the point, check out the song lists, and figure out what songs you want to play. Although two things to keep in mind, Rock Band has the drum kit and the microphone, and are seem to be more keen on keeping the downloadable content promise that Guitar Hero II utterly bailed on.
EDIT: If it helps at all, the first three full albums being released as DLC are The Who's Who's Next, Nirvana's Nevermind and 18 random songs from the Grateful Dead. God only knows what they are going to cost, but there you go.

yes, that was my plan as well. Both have two excellent tracklists (some minor annoyances but still solid), both will be loadsa fun. I think RB will have the better features, best downloadable content will be a killer, but GH3 is going to be great as well and I'm pretty sure the devs wouldn't like to lose a seemingly lost fight. I'll probably get both

It's sad that I'll probably wind up buying a next gen console just so I can rock out to Who's Next.

Yeah, but then i have to find friends who don't want to play guitar, and get them to shell out money for accesaries.
I predict RB is not going to be as huge of a success as some beleive.

Are you folks aware that (as of the last I heard) Rock Band is going to run about $200 bucks?
I think that alone is going to dissuade a whole lot of buyers. It's got a few strikes against it already:
1. Price...you're almost paying for a new console.
2. Finding people to play with: I'm sure there are "single player" modes of some kind or another, but to get the full experience you need a full "band", and that's not likely to happen every day.
3. Space - Let's be honest...a drum set, guitar-controllers, and a microphone takes up a fair bit of space, and that is a factor for a fair number of folks.
So yeah, I'm gonna be pretty surprised if Rock Band is a runaway success.

RB will be a niche title, that's a understatement.
but damn..a drum set? I'm a drum addict

To me, it's worth the $200 just for the drum set. So what if I don't have enough room or enough people. I get to whack away at a plastic drum kit.

I was under the assumption it would be like...yknow, 60, with extra cash for each controller.
If it's 200, theres no way i'm buying it, i can get a wii for 50 bucks more.

From my understanding, it comes as a "full set." (Drum Kit, Microphone, Game, and one or two guitar controllers, because if I recall the G4 E3 coverage correctly, the controllers are definitely not the same as Guitar Hero).
So you are getting a lot of stuff for your money, but yes, it's not that much less than a Wii. And it's far less likely to be an "impulse buy" than most other games out there.

I think you can buy a plastic drum kit that doesn't hook up to your video game machine for less. ;)

Will each GH3 game have an exclusive song(s) per system like the 360 GH2 had?
