View Full Version : Why is Resident Evil getting another movie?

Resident Evil: Extinction is coming in a few weeks but how and why? The first two didn't make any real money and were the most slow paced action movies in HISTORY yet they get another sequel? Why?

I liked the first two, and do plan on watching the third.

I don't think that they are great, but they were good mindless fun.

My wife however, really liked them.

Also, they both did fairly well in the box office and made great DVD sales. Don't know where you got your info that they didn't do so hot from.

It honestly sounds like a case of "I didn't like them, therefore they didn't make money."

I'm with rick on the mindless action fun. I have slightly more hope for this one cause the director of the first Highlander and the first Prophecy is at the helm. But I have no allusions that it'll be THAT much more than mindless action fun. Which is fine with me. I still got the games if I want an actual engaging story (and someday I'll get around to Code: Veronica :D).

Zombies are popular this decade. I haven't played the games, but I loved the first RE movie. To be honest, I fell asleep during the second one. The first one was great, because the commando team was so focused and professional that it made every scene seem tense and important. Plus the subplots involving Milla's character's foggy memory and the traitor in the group paid off with some nice plot twists. The second movie seemed very unfocused, due to the large cast spread out in various locations.

I hope to God the token black guy gets killed off in a brutal manner. I hated how in the second movie, dumbass Jill sent the reporter off on her own. The reporter should've survived and been the star of Extinction. She was ten times funnier than the token black.

It's sad that I don't remember any of the awful movie characters' names.

The right question is why didn't they wait until Sienna Guillory's schedule was empty before making 3?

Jill Valentine deserves to be the star of one of the movies, IMO.

She was the best thing about REsident Evil: Apocalypse.

I realize that I am probably in the minority on this, but I thought that the first Resident Evil movie reminded me of both Pitch Black and Aliens, in a good way. RE wasn't as good as either of those other two movies, but it was good enough that I really enjoyed it.

In general I am not not a big fan of zombie movies myself. Dead and Breakfast is the only really super amazing awesome one out there, followed by a good but overrated Shaun and the original dawn is decent.

That being said the only good thing about the first one was Michelle Rodriguez and the only good thing about the second one I never have to see it again.

I thought they were fun to watch on DVD. I wouldn't buy a ticket to them, but I know they did decent B.O. and great DVD sales. Plus, there seems to be some sort of big fan base for the movies. I will watch this thrid one when it comes out on DVD cause Ali Larter is in it, and after Heroes, she now seems to be a decent actress on top of being good looking.

You'd be surprised how many movies don't do well in the US but make a killing in the overseas markets. Throw in DVD rental/sales as well as sales to HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, PPV and related media and even a lousy movie can show a very good profit.

Don't let anybody else tell you different: there's only one reason why Hollywood makes sequels and that's because the previous movie made somebody money.

Why is Resident Evil getting another movie?

Because both movies were entertaining and the studio is making a profit on them. Plus the games are very popular and that's where they are marketing these movies.

The studio believes in this franchise that's why they already have scripts for parts 4 and 5 and have Milla signed to do those movies.

Whoa, really? I guess I kinda assumed she'd bite it in a heroic way in this one making room for Claire (Larter) to be the main heroine in any future movie. Hm. That's interesting. I'm guessing they want to do as many as the games (part 5 the game is coming out next year, right?).

That's how Jill dressed in the RE3:Nemesis video game so that's how she was dressed in the RE movie that took place during Nemesis timeline wise. My guess is that once the zombies took over Raccon City, the only clothes that were still in one piece in Jill's apartment were her undercover hooker clothes :p

Bad ticket sales? Did you just assume it or actually look it up and see?

Because if you did look up the facts, you would know better.
http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/series/ResidentEvil.php

And if it didnt try to have a story and such and was all action, everyone would be bitching that it had no story or characters in it. Is no one happy with anything?

I liked those movies better than most of the hollywood crap that rolls out. Was better than any of the marvel movies to come out past years and was better than anyother game movie in awhile.

So its getting a sequel because folks actually paid to see it and it made money.

Next time it would be nice to see people know what they are talking about, one thing I hate about the net is its like the 1700's again and you dont have to prove anything, just say whatever you want and everyone just goes along with it because "well I read it on the internet". I bet if I wrote something that the best way to cure a yeast infection for women is by putting sulfuric acid in their eyes someone would believe it because it was on the net.

Target release for RE5 right now ranges anywhere from sometime next year to 2010. Capcom scrapped RE4 a few times before finally deciding to go with what was eventually released so they could wind up doing the same with with RE5. And if it's anything like RE4, the wait will be definitely worth it.

Yeah because those type of movies are unintentional comedy but I still I haven't found any redeeming qualities about Resident Evil. The movie induces sleep. That's how lethargic the action sequences and story are. A totally bland and uninteresting movie..yet apparently it "moves DVDs"? We live in a odd world indeed.

also i despise the "Alice" character.she seems so fan fiction-esque.its like some kid decided to put their own ubber character into a franchise despite having its own original characters.i mean she's so out of place.

I agree on the Alice part. Now Alice would have been fine if it was just a stand alone movie that doesn't feature the resident evil cast but with the original Resident Evil characters playing second fiddle to her Alice seem like a bad Mary Sue fan fiction character.

she has curves?!?!?

her FACE is really what's kept her on the modeling map. she's not curvy-- AT ALL! but she does have a very distinctive "look".

she was one of those "androgynous" models in the late 80s and 90s that could still successfully look feminine. I'm thinking, who were they... other models that had a more "masculine" look like.. or, you could say she was like a poor man's Linda Evangelista (at that time they both sported fairly similar looks).

Milla probably was the highest paid supermodel in 2004 because she bagged some huge contracts with Loreal, Donna Karan, and I don't remember the others, but THOSE two would be enough... she's not exactly a "supermodel" in the conventional sense that Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, or Linda Evangelista were... but, make no mistake, she's been very successful (not quite so much in the states, but more of the world-encompassing sort of career).

I enjoyed both RE movies as mindless, idiotic, plot-hole ridden crap-fests that were fun. of course, I enjoyed "Doom" and "Freddy vs Jason" in the theaters... so there ya go.

Off-Topic: Gemma Ward looks like an anime alien--almost like if Eureka (from Eureka Seven) were a real girl (with blond hair). maybe SHE should star in some video game movies... her acting can't be much worse than Milla's.. or is she gonna be the next Kathy Ireland!

well, either the zombies lose and the future looks like it does now, but with zombie vaccines... or they bother to have a conflict in the movie and the zombies take out a few cities. (a sci-fi drama about the CDC post-zombie is an awesome idea for a film btw, i might make a comic of it, though a zombie comic where there are barely any zombies and even less shooting might not be easy to market...)

Don't take it to seriously. The movies are just popcorn flicks. Leave your brain at the door and you'll enjoy it more.

I saw the first movie in theatres, and just about asked for my money back because I was neither scared nor entertained by it.

I didn't bother with the second movie at all, because it seemed like more of the same.

That said, apparently the second movie did extremely well in Toronto. It was because many of the movie's exterior shots were filmed here, including one pivotal shot where they, ahem, blow up city hall.

Most Torontonians I know who did see the movie went just to watch that scene.

The Resident Evil Movie franchise is an abomination. From the fact that it replaces some of the most interesting characters in a video game saga with that dumb wench Alice to how they turned Nemisis into a puppet moron who LOSES to Alice and then turns good.

And the fact that they give Alice SUPER POWERS in the second movie thats supposed to be based of normal people trying to survive the zombies(Survival Horror anyone?) ruined it for me.

Chris, Claire, Leon, and Jill are so much more badass than that retard for a character.

And what the hell does this next movie have to do with the games? I've played all the major resident evil games and NONE of them have taken place in a desert.

I just saw the trailer for Extinction. It really looks like any other zombie/slasher flick out there and doesn't really bare any resemblance to it's source at all. At least the original movie stayed somewhat true to the theme of sneaking around a huge complex trying to AVOID zombies. This is just Alice going apeshit and doing Matrix Kung Fu on a bunch of zombies in a desert.
