Hey everybody,

Some of you might remember the 3d lil hellboy model I was making about a month ago, anyway, I need some help from some of you great artists and illustrators here on the HB board.

I want to portray Hellboy somewhere in between his lil Hellboy state and his full grown Hellboy state. I don't really wanna dress him up in the pilot's jumpsuit (like how Eric Powell draws him in Weird tales), but I don't wanna dress him just like grown up HB. He's not part of the BPRD yet I imagine, maybe he still lives at the airforce base. I had been modeling him with a lot of BPRD stuff (the belt, the BPRD T-shirt, the shorts), and I'm starting to think it might be better to make a blend of his jumpsuit outfit with his modern day outfit...

So...can anyone do me a favour and a do a little sketch of what the inbetween hellboy might look like? I'd really appreciate it.

here's the model as it is right now:
http://www.vfs.com/~3d44kol/Pic_MiN/lil%20hellboy%20remake.jpg

Look out for some more of my HB models in the coming months - I'm making a grown HB, a Herman Von Klempt (with Robo body), a Kriegraffe, and probably a roger (with a kilt).

How about giving him a t-shirt (or a tank top like now) with a print from some tv-series that aired during the 50's or 60's. Could also be some kind of space program t-shirt or something like that which kids back then probably found very exciting.

Or, maybe they didn't have those kind of t-shirts back then. Probably not. Hm... He wouldn't look too bad with his chest bare either. I used to run around a lot like that in the summers as a kid.

Big khaki shorts would look good. And you can let those have a lot of straps and stuff (like those cargo pants everyone wore two years ago) which will be a nod to grown-up HB's belt with all the stuff in it. And if you make them somewhat baggy that will strengthen the idea that he's still a kid.

And instead of talismans and stuff you could hang a slingshot, a baseball glove or something like that from his belt.

/ Jakob

PS. He looks very cool btw. Great job so far!!

Since he was that age in the late forties I say blue jeans with the cuffs rolled up and a striped t-shirt. I love the slingshot and baseball glove idea.

Check out the kid on the left for bagginess.

great ideas guys, I dig the baseball glove, sling shot, dennis the menace kinda look - maybe overals :)

I like the idea of giving Hellboy overalls, which have all kinds of pockets for Hellboy's juvenile whatnots (as just an ordinary rural kid, I came home with all kinds of appalling items in my overall pockets on a daily basis; I can only imagine what Hellboy finds in Area 51 to haul around).

What year are we talking here? Early 60's? Cowboy shirts and corduroy pants were considered good clothing for boys then- you could look at some period photos (if I had the family album here, I'd scan in some pics of my dad and his brothers). I concur with whoever said HB's clothing should be baggy... given this kid's odd shape and unpredictable growth, Dr. Bruttenholm would probably have chosen things for him to grow into. And though Hellboy is less likely to get hand-me-downs than other kids, he might have adopted an army jacket or similar.

A note about what he's wearing in your illustration- in the late 50's - early 60's, it would have been passable only as underwear, not as proper clothing (well, except for the utility belt). My mother is still somewhat nauseated by the sight of men in tank tops, since she believes deep in her soul that they should be wearing a real shirt over the tank. (To be fair, the only guys she's complained of would definitely benefit from being hidden from view as much as possible).

I would envision something close to "Leave it to Beaver" or like "The Andy Griffeth show", Overalls, baseball glove, button down shirt with little checkwork patterns, tennis shoes. And I like the pockets in the overall, which could hold everything that any hellboy would need to carry.

I really like the idea of baggy overalls, with a big chest/bib pocket with a frog inside! He's gotta have a frog!

I agree with a frog and If possible maybe a fishing pole, wait there aren't that many lakes in the desert. So forget the pole. :D

When i get it rapid prototyped I could build him a little norman rockwell esque environment.

Started rebuilding him friday. Going for a more realistic look, still not sure if I'm going to give him the belt...I really like the belt.

Know what? I think the old face had more charm to it. More personality, this looks a bit too generic.

The old face definitely had more a hellboy flavour too it. I'm trying to blend a realistic child's face with the HB trademark features, it's proving difficult...

The old face just wasn't realistic enough.

playing with the face. I figured I'd make a normal kids face then mess it up, haven't really started messing it up, cept for giving him an underbite:

Wow! I like the stockier build- you can really see how he's going to grow up into the barrel-chested Hellboy we know. His feet are great, too.

Quick critique on the overalls- can you make them a bit baggier? Looser especially around the legs and the waist. Possibly the bib part should sag out and over the belt a bit, and there should be wrinkles of extra fabric at the tops of the thighs (I realise that this is rather fine detail of shape and texture). Also in the 'fine detail' category, I like the reinforced knees; a good touch for a child as active as Hellboy. Possibly the patch areas should be a different colour. My mom always reinforced the knees of my new jeans with the backs of the legs from last year's worn-out pair, so the fabric seldom matched.

09-14-2004, 01:59 AM
Have loved this lil' guy since you first started with him...your work is an inspiration! What software are you using?

The overalls are a cool new direction for HellBOY. Most likely better without the belt. As for the face, I look forward to your "messing up" version. It will be interesting to see how you bridge the gap. I enjoy seeing the more realistic approach you are taking.

One question about the model's horns. Are they covered in skin? Without any obvious break in the connection to his head it looks like they are covered. Perhaps this is a detail not yet included.

Anyway, enough nitpicking...I love it and can't wait to see more!

Great Goon, Kolby! Are you using any pre-made parts, or do you really model that fast from scratch?

KWAK!
09-15-2004, 02:28 PM
I modeled him from scratch...I'm a pretty fast modeler. Of course after I crunch a whole body and head in like 3 hours, I'll spend the next 4 days scrutinzing the position of every little point and edge - crunching geo is easy, refining geo takes time.

I've spent bout 1 hour 15 minutes to make him so far.

Anyway, glad you guys like it. I think he'll be a fun to texture and animate. Maybe a Powell style HB is next up.

I'd still like to see your take on a Mignola style Hellboy. How well does your renderer do hair and fur effects? I'd like to see someone take a crack at a 3D Kriegaffe, too!

KWAK!
09-15-2004, 02:49 PM
I'd love to do a Mignola style hellboy, but that one dude, Rune, did such an ace job matching Mignola's style that I wouldn't even wanna attempt it. Plus it's a lot of shader and compositing work, I'm more into modeling.
I've actually made a Mignola style HB head, I'll have to dig that out.
I really wanna do a Kriegraffe and Von Klempt.
XSI does decent hair and fur, with a lot of tweeking it can look really nice.

R.

KWAK!
09-21-2004, 12:18 PM
nope not rigged yet. Can't rig him till I've finished modeling.

the process is:

1) create all geometry
2) Unwrap UVs.
3) Paint textures.
4) Create rig.
5) Envelope.

then I get to animate.

John, actually, I decided that the Lil' Hellboy model just wasn't going in the right direction. Last night I decided that once I finish Goon I'm gonna start on a BPRD project consisting of at least Hellboy (with corpse), Roger, Johann, abe, and probably lobster johnson...don't know if I'll try to do it the Mignola style, but guaranteed I'll be doing the comic costume.

Hey Kol, great textures! They really give life to the model. Did you use displacement mapping for the veins?

If I could offer one bit of advice, I would suggest you stagger the front teeth. The two in the middle make him look a little buck-toothed and doofy. Kinda makes him look a little like a certain "wascilly wabbit". ;)

KWAK!
11-21-2004, 09:43 PM
the veins are done using normal mapping, it's similar to displacement mapping, except that it doesn't actually subdivide the geometry. Very fast for rendering.

As for the teeth, Powell was pretty happy with these teeth, so I don't know if I'm going to alter them, he is supposed to be buck toothed, and a bit doofy, as far as I know.

I re-read my last post, and realize it could be taken negatively. I truly meant no offense, and I hope you didn't take it as such. It's cool that Powell likes your model, but as a fellow artist doing your interpretation of the character, what really matters is that you like it. I'm no authority, and my opinion is no more valid than anyone else's.

ah no, no worries, I been getting lots of 'what's with the teeth?' comments on various forums, so I'm just getting used to writing such a response. But yeah, I'm gonna see how they look textured, then I'll decide whether to tone them down or push them up into his mouth a bit. I personally am fairly happy with them, though they do look out of place next to the fully textured face.

Love the rendering yer doing, unfortunately, not much time to analyse it. Thing I could say though.. perhaps bigger feet? Thing I've spotted with kids due to grow tall, their feet always seem to sprout first. It would add to the "throwing off normality", and put him out of proportion a bit.

I've started working on a Mignola styled Hellboy tonight.
Right now I'm mostly referencing the Mezco 7" and 18" and JT's bust, and the art of HB.
Anyway, I'm gonna be working on this pretty frequently over the next few days, I could always use a fresh pair of eyes, so crits are welcome.

Once I get the whole body down, I'm gonna tweak the model while referencing conquerer worm, then onto the coat and belt.

The RHOD is an old model, so the structure on the hand is totally messed up. Gonna remodel that later.

Great work, but..I can't see the ears...they are so distinctive! And i think that would cool to see veins on his arms, even isn't a characteristic of Mignola drawing, but it would give a sense of muscolar power.
