View Full Version : Characters Whose UNpopularity I Don't Quite Get

I figured that we could use a good corollary to Gail thread on those characters whose popularity escapes us.

There are a few characters who AREN'T terribly popular (some are even LOATHED now) and I never quite got it.

Off the top of my head:

Mr. Terrific (Terry Sloane). I love the gimmick. He's just THAT good. At everything. And it really works for me in a 40s style setting. I'd like to see his costume reinterpreted a bit (similar to the trend now of drawing every scale in Captain America's mail chestpiece) so that the "Fair Play" on his chest doesn't look like it was scrawled on with a sharpy. Modern Mr. T is cool too but I like Terry's less complicated schtick and brighter costume.

X-Man. Alternate reality kid messiah with a chip on his shoulder! Jerks are so much FUN!

Triumph. Speaking of jerks... I really liked Triumph. He was driven but not like Guy Gardner driven. More like the Bat-dick except not quite as competent at it. Really great chemistry with The Ray. Awesome powers. And I dug the concept of a "lost" Silver-Age hero. This guy was Sentry before Sentry and IMO less overburdened with the alcoholism and insanity angles attached to Sentry. And I really felt for the poor guy when he landed himself in progressively bigger messes. I always had the pet theory that he was actually the founder of a PARALLEL earth's JLA and now that we have that in play, I'd really like to see him thawed out and pay a visit to his homeworld.

Thunderstrike. I never really got Thor outside of Simonson. But I dug Eric Masterson, both when he posed as Thor and when he had his own identity and I REALLY dug the second trinity of Avengers/Force Works types via US Agent, War Machine and Thunderstrike.

Adam Warlock. He's genetically engineered space Jesus! He was crucified and died for the sins of Counter Earth on a GIANT ANKH! Hamlet-like brooding. Trippy visuals. His friends are all misfits. His worst enemy is himself. Starlin did the most memorable stuff with him but I see his story as THE BOURNE IDENTITY via Jack Kirby and I think that's a take that could really work in a modern context.

Ben Reilly. Dismissed as derivative but has the greatest unfulfilled plot hook EVER. He wants to be Peter Parker. He wants to be Spider-man. That's SO INSANE... It's like Parker's own neurosis multiplied. Think about it! Life sucks for Peter Parker. Life sucks for Spider-man. And along comes this clone with EVEN WORSE LUCK who ASPIRES to be the world's punching bag. He doesn't HAVE to be; he could go live his own life. He could be an Avenger. But NO! He feels compelled to live the suckiest life in all of comics. And as much as Peter himself is hard luck, Ben is "even worse luck". He spent years as a homeless drifter. He was created to fulfill a vendetta by a psychotic college professor who had the hots for Gwen Stacy.

Mine aren't outwardly disliked, just not given enough page time or recognition,I feel.

Valkyrie : The most tenured of all the Defenders in raw issues. An underused and very interesting character with much potential. Her one shot was a poor effort at giving her press. She has some really enjoyable classic Defenders material under Gerber. What reader can forget the time she was arrested and placed in jail? Her stuff opposite Enchantress is good reading, too. There's a whole mythos aspect to explore from Valhalla's view in the waiting. It could be something refreshing,if pulled off correctly.

The Invaders(classic) : I was going to say just Union Jack & Spitfire. But the whole angle could also use more publicity. The classic Roy Thomas written series is a great look back set in World War Two time period piece. With nice character interaction.Marvel's newer Invaders attempt didn't catch the feeling.OTOH,Brubaker's issues with Spitfire(Jacqueline,as always) & the new Union Jack(Joseph Chapman)in Captain America last year (21st Century Blitz) were really fine. And Winter Soldier:Winter Kills was a high quality Invaders related tale.

Stingray - His costume KICKS YOUR ASS!

Pulse - He's so cute and funny. He's the Marvel equivalent of Nemesis.

Moonstar - Excellent New Mutant. So much cooler than Cannonball.

Zauriel - Has so much potential but most people write him as all sanctimonious.

Plastic Man. Yeah, I know I've got a fixation on characters who can alter their shape; but Plas did more than just that. He was a 'vigilante' who operated on the inside. He had and still worked his shadier connections. When Pasko and Staton did their version in those 8-page stories during DC's implosion, they had him working as an agent hunting down wacky criminals; I'd love to see that revisited and expanded upon, bringing back more light-hearted done-in-one stories.

Thankfully the Metal Men are getting some respect. If only someone of Rouleau's mindset would get hold of the Doom Patrol.

And, dare I say it?

Space Cabbie.

Danny Chase (also my favorite character). How can people call him an arrogant little snot when the same characteristics are being used by Rose Wilson in the current Titans comic and getting her lauded for it?

Looking back on it now, she is a lot more interesting than most X-Men characters, even if she has a bit of random unconnected powers syndrome(desire/fear images, animal communication, valkyrie stuff). I also think she should be re-paired with Wolfsbane, because they had a really cool synergy.

Scott Summers.

Okay, so I haven't read X-Men regularly for a loong time. But Scott used to kick ass--he beat Wolverine in a hand-to-hand fight once. Okay, wait I understand why he's unpopular--like many characters, no one's written him well in a long time. Even Whedon writes him like a whiny jerk most of the time.

Linda Danvers (Supergirl)

Well, I understand the unpopularity of the Renee Montoya Question because I partially share it - it's not that I don't think she's a fantastic character, it's just I don't think the Question should be a legacy hero. The Question is an identity thing - Vic Sage's identity and no one else's.

I also understand the Linda Danvers hate (I just don't agree with it) - her backstory and origin is very complicated and it's harder for readers to get into a character with a complicated history behind them.

The problem with Linda Danvers is the backstory.

If your name is Supergirl, we expect you to be related to Superman. End of discussion. The whole matrix/angel thing was needlessly complicated.

Mia Dearden's Speedy. I love the character (and WANT her return to Teen Titans sooooooo badly) but to most people, it seems she's an 'also-ran'.

Arrowette was a far more interesting character.
