Here's what I can tell you: The Host is a korean-made film. South Korea has been the world leader in archery for a couple of decades. It's their national sport now and they take it VERY seriously. For what it's worth, intersex and trans people are sent to the prison based on what the government of their state determines to be their legal sex, regardless of whether this matches their self-identified, mental, social, or physical sex.
This becomes especially dangerous in states that don't recognize legal sex changes, such as Texas, where a fully transitioned post-op transwoman who is legally, socially, and physically female can be sent to a men's prison.
Even in states that do recognize legal sex changes, which is most of them, transwomen who have not undergone SRS and had their gender marker legally changed will end up in a men's prison, where they are inevitably targeted for abuse by other prisoners and frequently by guards, and denied access to necessary medical care.
Pink Bat Max

In California, the prison you're assigned is based on the absence or presence of a penis. I was on a Human Rights Committee task force to study and offer recomendations for compliance with transgender rights laws.... damn, I can't even remember all of what we were called, but I do know the in-joke was that this gave new meaning to the term 'penal system'.
Of course, it was a gallows humor, as transgender men and women alike would be affected by this policy, and likely face assault, rape and/or abuse should we go to prison.
The definition of intersex bears noting, as it's different from the definition of transgender. I defer to the Intersex Society of North America and their website in this:
"“Intersex” is a general term used for a variety of conditions in which a person is born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn’t seem to fit the typical definitions of female or male. For example, a person might be born appearing to be female on the outside, but having mostly male-typical anatomy on the inside. Or a person may be born with genitals that seem to be in-between the usual male and female types—for example, a girl may be born with a noticeably large clitoris, or lacking a vaginal opening, or a boy may be born with a notably small penis, or with a scrotum that is divided so that it has formed more like labia. Or a person may be born with mosaic genetics, so that some of her cells have XX chromosomes and some of them have XY."
In common parlance, the term 'hermaphrodite' is often used.
And Countess, thanks for your apology.... I think it speaks quite highly of you and your character. Do forgive me if I'm being snippy.

Thanks. I was asking because it looks pretty good to me, with my one archery lesson under my belt, but it's different from the model in your avatar. In particular, she tends to point the bow up as she loads the arrow and the lower it to find her target rather than slightly down and then bringing it up.
There is a very good shot of this about halfway through the movie--only very minor spoilers to come. She's standing on the bank of the river in the middle of a rainstorm, the monster coming rapidly at her as she fires arrow after arrow into it, a somewhat futile gesture given that it's a monster the size of a large SUV and she's using target arrows.
What struck me was that is was very different from most movie archery, with no arrow a second being fired without aim as the archer does acrobatics and holds the bow sideways. Instead, she's obviously going through all of the steps one by one, finding her target with each arrow, quickly, but with such deliberation that it seems very slow compared to most movie archers.
What's my net worth? Will I have enough to retire comfortably.

Tom explained this in the Comm thread.
Basically, for a gay man deep in the closet, due to family, job, or community considerations, what we would think of as traditional meeting places such as gay bars and such for a very long time weren't safe places, so they had to make do with public venues like bathrooms and parks, using a series of codes.
A gay man in the closet may not be able to go to a gay bar without outing himself.
If we ever reach the point that gay people can just be openly gay without consequence, such encounters will likely fade away entirely, as there will no longer be any need for secrecy.
It's one of those Catch 22 setups--gays often can't be completely open about who they are everywhere, so they congregate and hide, and this in turn is used as evidence that there's something wrong with what they're doing.
"We can't allow them to be open about who they are in public--what they do is wrong and dirty. We know that it's wrong and dirty because they hide what they're doing."

Well I've never had bathroom sex...so I can't speak from experience.
But i do think it's a double standard. If a straight guy and girl are sexin' it up in public (and it's not a prostitutional thing...), it's a cutesie situation that they get a slap on a wrist for and everyone has a good laugh. They even show it on TV where a guy and girl go into a bathroom and get it on, and it's all good....everyone has probably seen a scene like that at least at some point in their lives.
Technically, I've never heard about gay bathroom sexers forcing themselves on anyone. If you get approached in a bathroom, say "NO". Personally, I don't see the big deal.
Gay men are targeted and entrapped in these situations. I watched a show on court tv recently where they set up stings with "attractive" officers enticing men into the bathroom for sex and then slapping them down. The narrator then had the gall to say "A dangerous predator is off the street before any more children in this park could be put into harm's way." Excuse me? Children? Last I saw a man in his thirties is not a vulnerable child.
At any rate, the luring thing is what gets me...the cop entices the man into the bathroom and THEN cuffs him. And then he's called a predator. if a straight guy was being enticed by a gorgeous woman into a bathroom, i find it hard to believe he wouldn't at least think very very seriously about following her.
That's my rant. Otherwise, Gilda seems to have the bulk of the answer right there in her post, mine was more specific i suppose.

I ask this with no malice, the same as Carl Sagan asked: "What are Conservatives conserving?" What exactly is the Conservative philosophy about?
The word conservatives etymology can be traced back to the Latin word conservāre, which means to conserve. One could always argue that there have been conservatives since man began to think about politics, but it was not until the age of reason did these ideals get put into writing. The counter reformation, along with the reaction to the French revolution best detailed by Edmund Blake in Reflections on the Revolution in France.
Burke was sympathetic to the plight of the American colonists, but rejected the violent means the French used to achieve their goals. He argued strongly against unrestrained royal power and for the role of political parties in maintaining a principled opposition capable of preventing abuses by the monarch or by specific factions within the government. His most important publication in this regard was his Thoughts on the Cause of the Present Discontents of 1770. In it, Burke expressed his opposition to the influence of the court and he was also an advocate for the people's interests. He was also a strong advocate for free trade and free markets. Adam Smith cited him as an influence.
Conservatism in the United States can trace it's origins back to our nation's founding. Loyalists such as Thomas Hutchinson and our founding fathers created republicanism, which both parties draw ideas from. The two biggest influences on conservative thought today are Thomas Jefferson and John Randolph of Roanoke. They warned about how banking and industry had an influence on and corrupted government. They also advocated for state's rights and opposed judicial activism.
The modern conservative movement in the Untied States can trace it's origins back to the 1950-'s. Russel Kirk's the Conservative mind and William F. Buckley Jr's manifesto in The National Review in 1955. Along with Barry Goldwater, they laid the template for this. New conservatism favored intervention overseas as a way of counteracting Soviet influence, and it was a break from William Taft's isolationism.
The Republicans deviated from these ideals during the 1970's due to the religious right taking advantage of the nation's irrational fears that the country was spiraling out of control. They like to fancy themselves the children of the Reagan revolution.
A lot of so called conservatives claim to be for fiscal responsibility, but with a 521 trillion dollar deficit in 2004 ( the Dems are partially responsible as well, but the Republicans are also pushing through pork barrel legislations)we see that is not the case. They also claim to be for individual liberties, but really than, why are they so opposed to gay marriage? They are also for less government, except in cases like Terry Schiavo. I wish that the Republicans would be taken over by the true conservatives, like Ron Paul, George F. Will and Fareed Zakeria. Than perhaps i will register with them.
The so-called conservatives claim to be standing athwart history, yelling stop at liberal policies that they feel will break America. A lot of them are cultural conservatives as well, claiming that due to the ubiquity of sex and violence propagated in pop culture and the wide availability of abortions that America is turning into Sodom and Gomorrah and that is why we have school shootings and God is lifting his protection from us, etc, etc. So therefore, it is their duty to revert America back to the way it was in the 1950's. They have no proof that America was better off before the social revolutions of the 60's and 70's, but they like to think so. They also claim to be for gradual change, but actively resist it. In order to restore America's greatness in the world, we have to make America the way it was.
And this is why ladies and gentlemen, I am a moderate Libertarian.
