It was a rhetorical question, but a sincere one. Even with ten years internet experience under my belt, it still amazes me when people get really worked up about something stupid.

Yes, yes, the idea of using a video game system as an exercise tool is ludicrous.
Are you happy now that I've acknowledged your thesis?

I didn't get really worked up about anything. The video just saved me the trouble of mocking the Wii Fit

As weird as that is, it's hard for me to be surprised by anything the Japanese do anymore.
Wait, hang on: one of the characters available for spanking is "child molester". I'm sure that'll erase the grief you've been dealing with ever since that random hiker discovered your kid's sodomized corpse in shallow grave in the woods. Kudos, Japan. You've done it again.

I think it's Korean.
And also, I just can't help too say that Nintendo has been really letting me down as of the past few years. It's almost like their just taking a dump on all of their long time fans.
Now I AM NOT a fanboy who trolls every Wii thread just to bash Nintendo(unlike some people), but Wii Fit has the same appeal to me as a kick in the balls.
I love the Wii, and I think it's great, but let's get more Smash Bros' and Metroids and FAR less mini-games and "digital excercise". AND GET THAT SH*T ONLINE!!!

The sad thing is that Nintendo seems to believe that Wii Fit is a top-tier release for them. They were pimping it heavily at E3.
Talk about a niche within a niche title.

due to their recent marketing success wouldn't it be stupid to NOT pimp such stuff? People will buy millions of this..remember than Nintendo is not just a company for the hardcore like us, they're also leading the market DUE to those gimmicks and casual gamers

My thing about this is that if a person has to go out and buy a $250 game system and game/accessory that costs God knows how much to exercise, they really should reassess their priorities in life.
Wii + Wii Fit = $300+
Pair of cheap running shoes = $20

This goes beyond gimmick though. I think Nintendo has overestimated the whole "active engagement" bit with this particular title. Casual gamers doesn't immediately equate to people that want to sweat while playing their video game machine.

I don't think the idea is to transform casual gamers into fitness gurus. There are a lot of people out there that are already employing some sort of home workout instruction on DVD. While they may not rush out to buy a Wii, some of them might already be sharing a household with someone who has one (husband/kids/roomate whatever).
By the end of the year, we'll have a Zelda, a Metroid, a Mario and a Smash Bros on the Wii, so it's not like Nintendo has neglected it's core franchises in favor of stuff like Wii-Fit, anyway.

Not yet. Hopefully they never will.
I mean, look what they did to Donkey Kong. DKC games for SNES were my all time favorite platformers, and I LOVED DK64. I actually bought a Cube in anticipation for more DK. Then they give us some Bongo crap.
Ok, that's fine. Not my flavor. Maybe the next DK gme will be...nope, another Bongo game.
Nintendo is infamous for crappy gimmicks. And even if their crappy gimmicks work great for their games, it doesn't mean they will for third parties. Even Nintendo (who are, imo, probably the best game developers on Earth) can't carry an entire generation by themselves. They need 3rd party, but most 3rd parties are either too intimidated, or just don't want too risk money with Ninty's new "innovation", whatever it may be at the time.
But anyway, I'm just ranting now. Wow...if somebody told me ten years ago that I would be criticizing Nintendo so harshly...I would have left and continued playing some N64. How times have changed.

have faith, the good games will finally flow, starting this autumn.
It's just that crappy developers foresaw the success of the Wii and jumped on the ship, knowing nothing about the hardware, stuffing some waggle without knowledge and sending the final product to the stores. Remember what happened with the PS2? That console had a unprecedented amount of s*it games for the same reason: "it's the most successful console, let's make a title for it, even if it sucks it will sell anyways!"
so yes, the new controls may intimidate some, but the true reason is that every freaking lazy arse developer is spitting out titles for the Wii, while other serious companies like Square (Final Fantasy) and Capcom (Zack and Wiki looks absolutely fantastic) are already showing the difference between talent and profit

Wii Fit isn't a niche title. It's just Nintendo's latest attempt to reach people who don't think they like video games. Does anyone still doubt this strategy?
Or look at it this way:
Step 1: Notice how many people already do step aerobics.
Step 2: Make step aerobics fun.
Step 3: Profit.
Thorlief
09-07-2007, 07:12 PM
yep, but also add this:
Step 0: In Japan the majority of population is workaholic; no time for gyms, and not enough space for a home gym.
NA territory has the highest percent of obese people in the world.
