Labrynth.
There was a point I was in real bad shape emotionally several years ago, and I started watching Labrynth daily. I would get home and pop it in.
I'm no scientist, but I think Labrynth could be marketed as a cure for depression. Such a beutiful, fun, and multilayered film.

Not a big fan of the 1980s movie decade, but the awesome movies it actually produced turned out to be very, very awesome:
Raging Bull
Blade Runner
Raiders of the Lost Ark
The Elephant Man
Empire Strikes Back
The Killer
Akira
Brazil
Die Hard
The Untouchables
Also, Conan the Barbarian, while not one of the greatest films or anything, kicks a lot of ass. It saddens me to think that some people believe the new Conan film should have 300-esque battle sequences. May God not have mercy on your wayward souls.

This statement confuses me, if only because most of the stuff in 300 seemed to be a cinematic evolution of the fight at the place of the gods. I can only imagine if Millius had the technology available at the time, it would have been more like 300. Unless you were just talking specifically about the CG artificiality of it?

I can only imagine if Millius had the technology available at the time, it would have been more like 300. Unless you were just talking specifically about the CG artificiality of it?
First, let me say that I thought the visuals in 300 were great and the best part about the movie (unfortunately, everything else was average or below average; as Alan Moore pointed out, 300 isn't even one of Miller's best works).
Second, one of the reasons why the visuals worked so well in 300 is because they emulated the simple themes of the film: glory, honor, fighting for your homeland, etc. Conan the Barbarian had no such pretension, and no Conan film should have themes of this kind. Therefore, having such visuals would not only be ripping off 300, but it would also mishmash with something that's supposed to be dirty and brutal and unglorified, like an unbathed barbarian who has sex with witches while eating children and goats (and half goat/half child hybrids).
This isn't to say that violence isn't enjoyable in Conan the Barbarian. It is. But the visual style of the film should fit the thematic material, and 300's visuals would do Conan injustice.

What, no Sixteen Candles fans?
My Twenty Favorite Films from the 1980’s
Honestly I didn’t think that the 1980’s was really the best decade for movies. It was an era were utter garbage like Top Gun, Flashdance and Footloose were all considered classics, and the most popular director was John Hughes.
Still any decade has some good films and even a couple of greats.
My Top 20 choices, in no particular order.
1. Repo Man
2. Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan
3. Brazil
4. Kagemusha
5. Excalibur
6. Time Bandits
7. The Last Temptation of Christ
8. The Dead Zone
9. Knightrider
10. Die Hard
11. The Meaning of Life
12. Zelig
13. Once Upon a Time in America
14. Prince of Darkness
15. Reds
16. Hairspray
17. Day of the Dead
18. History of the World Part One

What are you slumming?
Untouchables has to be added just for the "Odessa steps" sequence. Oh yeah also a David Mamet screenplay.
Raging Bull is easily the #1, it has got to be in the top 20 of all time.
Also, House of Games, Color of Money, Big Easy, Full Metal Jacket.
