...be able to provide a kick ass Die Hard movie?
I love Die Hard 1 & 2...and thought 4 was actually really entertaining.
I would love to go back to the days of action movies without any wire works. I think Woo would be able to deliver.
Anyone else think so?

The real question is, would he be able to resist putting in a scene where John MacLane fires his guns in slow motion while doves fly in the background.

Probably not.

I honestly don't think there's been enough doves in a Die Hard movie. I'd go so far as to say that Die Hard would have an added layer of superiority if there were a few more scenes with doves.

John Woo had almost become a parody of himself, between the super-slow motion and the doves.

Bring on the doves!
The more the better. In fact, the main villain in the next Die Hard movie should be the Pidgeon Lady from Home Alone 2.

I think it is less that, more that every single action director ever has ripped him off in the last 15 years or so.

John Woo needs to go back to China and make some serious action movie.

^Yes.
Woo gets a lot of that slo-mo from Peckinpah. But he definitely takes it to another level.

Perhaps there's an existing action franchise that Woo could rejuvenate his career with, but it ain't Die Hard. Even at his peak, his style would be totally ill-fitting.
I could see him doing something like a Transporter sequel.

I don't think doing a sequel of anything is going to make Woo great again.

Casablanca II, where Rick starts going all two-gun psycho on the Nazis?

I don't know, if Woo did a super violent take on West Side Story I'd at least RENT that. :)

Yeah, 'cos that's the only thing John Woo's ever done.
As for becoming a parody of himself, I think it's more a case of Hollywood generally being dumb as dirt.
John Woo has a lot more going for him as a director than doves, two-guns and slow-motion, but the cliches are all Hollywood wants from him.
Basically, it doesn't matter how good he is as a director, the American audience will still be a bunch of yahoos screaming out for 'Freebird'.

I guess everyone else missed this post. Not to mention what are the odds of another Die Hard movie? Part 4 was more of a finale than a restart.

Peckinpah was a definite influence but I think Woo's mentor Chang Cheh was the primary stylistic influence. Certain setpieces in the A Better Tomorrow series and the The Killer are very reminiscent of Chang's films. The whole heroic bloodshed genre was heavily influenced by Chang.

A fifth movie should star Lucy McClane.

Genre-wise and set-wise you're right, but I was talking about the actual action sequences. There's no way that anyone but Peckinpah has influenced Woo the most in regard to the slow-mo usage, etc.

When it comes to John Woo, this is the best suggestion I've heard in years.

I dont think so. Personally I would like john woo alot more if he left the hollywood movie machine and went back to making lower budget hong kong action films. He has been on a steady decline with movies since he got into making american films.
Hard target was good for being van damme, I enjoyed it.
Broken arrow wasnt to bad all in all. Pretty standard action film though.
Face off was better than arrow and I do like it.
Windtalkers I did not like.
Paycheck was a good waste of uma thurman.
Just his stuff has been declining steadily to me. I miss his older all or nothing movies where he just put it all in best he could. His american movies are more about style and being slick than putting out a movie thats really good. Or maybe he is just trying to hard to be what everyone in america expects, maybe he has to try and dial up "being john woo" for audiences here.
But no I dont think he could do die hard.
On a personal note a few scenes aside, die hard 4 was awful. It was a sellout to me to what movies have become. Just the whole cyber techno terrorists, kidnapped daughter, tons of bullets hitting scenery with little hitting folks, lack of cringe worthy violence and blood, comedic dorky savior of the movie that john is trying to protect, super underground computer expert cliche with comedic lines (smith) and so on. I mean yeah to a certain extent the first die hard had these elements to, but they just tried so hard to push them into this movie it felt cheapened.
I liked watching it one time, but I wished I didnt do it wasting all that money at the theater. The first one can not be beat, it was the very pinnacle of die hard and still one of the best action movies.
/sigh
Sorry if I got off topic.
