We've been noticing lag/outright lockout again. It seems to happen between noon and 1:00 edt every day.

Yeah, I've been noticing it the past couple days.

For me, it's usually between Midnight and about 2 a.m. that the server wants to burp and not show my posts...
What is casuing that, exactly?

The midnight one is when they're doing backups, if memory serves.

Midnight one is backups.
The other problems are related to hackers trying to gain access via exploits in vBulletin. Thankfully they're not that regular -- maybe once every other day or so -- and the downtime isn't too severe.
I do have an e-mail out to a couple of guys, but I'm not majorly concerned at this point. For the most part, traffic is still pretty consistent on the forums. Occasionally short outages are to be expected.

Server seems to be bad today.
Quite bad. That's because my admin was running a new stats program that's been killing the server this morning. I just asked him to kill it and run it tonight.

That said, it looks like the CBR Forums will soon be hosted on two servers -- a main Web server and a dedicated database server. Making arrangements for the upgrades today.

After a few good months, there've been access problems every day this week between 11am and 2pm Eastern or thereabouts.

Couple of small lags here and there, but nothing major as far as I can tell. We'll keep an eye on things.

It's been acting up a bit lately. Are we getting more traffic from all the recent conventions?

The forums have been doing well, but the server the forums are hosted on also hosts Comics Should Be Good. CSBG runs WordPress for its backend and it's not the most efficient program, so when CSBG has a busier day, it can mess with this server. Sometime in mid-to-late April, CBR's blogs will get their own server and the occasional problem should go away then.

I've hesitated to say anything, but CSBG is running on WordPress 2.0.2, a relatively ancient version that has some pretty major known security holes and other problems, probably including some relating to efficiency. Updating (We're on v2.3.3 right now, with v2.5 coming out in the next few weeks.) might alleviate some of the problems.
(edit: JHC, Jonah, you're running yours on WordPress 1.5.2! WTF?)

Many thanks for the info, Jonah!

The server has been absolutely terrible today. There have been at least 3 instances in the past six hours where the boards have been nonfunctional for at least 15 minutes at a time.

Oh noes teh horrors
I've been having problems with the forums on and off for about a week. It's annoying, but I can live with it. Just a heads up to anybody else having issues connecting to forums in particular.

Well okay, sure, it's not as bad as it was in darker times, but it's still pretty darn annoying.

We're moving the blogs off this server to another one on Wednesday evening, so that should free up resources for the Forums.

OK, hopefully the server problems should be going away for a while. The server hosting the forums, it's called Kara BTW, was hosting both the forums and Comics Should Be Good. If one or the other had a traffic spike, it would cause too many database connections and the server couldn't handle it (databases are very resource intensive). So, we've moved CSBG off to a dedicated server and now it's just the forums on this server. That should hopefully solve the recent slow downs.
If it does not, we'll purchase a second server for the forums, one a dedicated database server while the other will be a dedicated web server.

OK, well, new servers are on order. CSBG is back on the same server as the forums and will remain there until we can do these new installs. Hopefully it doesn't cause too many problems.

Any news here? The late-night server lag seems to be getting worse - it used to be that some of the posts were invisible till you hit the reply button, but the other night I couldn't get the forums to load at all.

It must be high tide, as Monica's been going down much more often of late.

I'm not sure if this is a server issue per se, but as of late I'm having difficulty with the search function.
It works just fine when you search for one word, like say "Batman". But if you try to search for something with multiple words like "Gotham City", it just goes to a blank page.
I don't think I'm the first person to notice this. Has it already gotten a mention elsewhere?

Same early-morning hijinks as usual today, regardless....
