Interesting redesigns; the first one I take it is Supergirl?

Nice work. I really like how fluid your figures and lines are. And I also like the soft glossiness of your colors.

Thanks, Gumbo, that really is Supergirl (or at least an attempt to rehash her design :) ) Iīm a sucker for Kara, the very first superhero I ever saw in full color when my sister bought this comic at a bus station once, eons ago. The red vape, the bright red boots.. I was hooked! :D

Thanks, Uatu, Iīm really glad youīve liked my style :)

Very nice work indeed!!!

I love your way with colors, as well as the way you figures seem to flow (look at the Flash go)! There's a nice feeling of freedom conveyed by the way these characters move.

Keep 'em coming!

Hi, guys,

today, Iīm in the mood to post my Immortal Tristara comics, hope you guys are into High Fantasy ;)

BTW, these pages are 2 years old, so bare with me ;)
Immortal Tristara was written way back in 1993, during my Oh-so depressing college years; a couple years ago I found the pages rotting in a drawer somewhere and nearly had a heart attack; I still liked the story but something had to be done about the (extremelly dated) art.
So I sat down and started redrawing and updating the whole thing.
Which brings us to these pages, hope you folks like them :)

Roquefort Raider - Heya, thanks :) Iīm glad youīre liking my Immortal Tristara comic, this was the first chapter of a 3-part mini-series I wrote WAAAAY back. :)

meethraa - Hi, meethraa, thanks. Drawing that Supergirl pinup was a riot, I couldnīt decide in what age range I wanted to put her;
Iīve just slapped the basic colours from the classic uniform but, looking back, I regret not having found a way to put blue in there somewhere.

Light a man a fre and heīll be warm for a night.
Light a man on fire and heīll be warm for the rest of his life.

That should read:

Light a fire for a man and he'll be warm for a night.
Light a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

And it may actually be lite rather than light but i am no spelling expert.

I mentioned it tonight in an e-mail. You have very soild work with (as Howy mentioned) great storytelling. Your faces are expressive and don't all look the same. This is a big deal with me. Your backgrounds are solid and look real, even the fantastical ones.

I did take a look at your Dark Sun thread and you have an interesting story concept going on in there.

Dark Sun
11-18-2004, 07:12 PM
i am coming up with a background story to the main one, kinda involving aliens and stuff. there needs to be a reason for the darkness and the virus. im also thinking the virus isnt gonna be a virus but more a black spore which multiplys and wipes out millions straight away and fills up the sky with a black smog sorta thing. but why would aliens let this happen? im writing 2 aliens into the story. good and bad of course. so i am working on the origins of the 3 stones and the history of these 2 alien species and how they affect the story. im thinking the 3 stones might be part of the good alien technology they hide in the stones away from the bad aliens. anyway theres alot of comlicated things which need to be ironed out and such so keep watching my other thread or u can contact me via email if u wanna discuss it more.

Thanks, Solaris, really glad youīve liked it my Alessa Nostromara :) I really-really would love to have the chance to finally draw this comic one day, it has some of the strangest high fantasy concepts my derranged mind ever managed to cook up. :D

Though I've only glanced at this thread, I have to say that your colours are brilliant. In general, the coloured pictures I've seen tricked my eyes into a 3D effect, the hues were blended so finely.

Of course, your line work is highly commendable also, with lots of details. Which to me honest, I expected right off the bat. The inks capture a lot of movement and unfold your stories in fantastic ways.

ScottDMSimmons

I really love the Immortal Tristara pages! Those are beautiful. They have a classic, Silver-Age, mixed with fantasy art feel to them. The inks are impressive, and I love the contrast. Will this be (or has it been) published? And if so, will it be black and white?

And when is your Infiniteens coming out? Your website says you are done with it (over 190 pages!), but may still want to tweak it abit. Did you find a publisher?

Hi, guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG, canīt believe Iīve been away for so long.
God, someone must definitelly be putting some overtime into ruinning my X-Mas season, first it was the flu that chained me to a bed for a week, now some morons playing with wires in my building rendered me internetless for another week or so!
So, what youīve all been up to while I was busy soaking, tell me everything!

Dark Sun - Heya, Dark Sun.
Yup, Iīm a freelance illustrator and comicbook artist; been working as a children and schhobooks illustrator since 1995.

Roquefort Raider - Hi, Roquefort Raider, thanks. :)

atoningunifexI - LOL Thanks, glad youīve liked the books; I get a kick at making tiny little details and sometimes hiding them in my drawings.

Leo - Olá, Leo, thank to you too, Iīm really glad youīve liked my work. I try to get my hands on as much feedback as I can get, so I really appreciate your comments.

ScottDMSimmons - Hello, Scott, arigato, Immortal Tristara was submitted to several publishers and none showed any interest in publishing it, thatīs why I decided to disclose the pages in here instead of letting them rot away in some obscure drawer.
The Infiniteens will be published by Committed Comics, but I donīt have dates yet; it may take a while since the pages (all 198 of them :) ) will still have to undergo the editorial process.

howyadoin- LOL Hi, Howyadoin, thanks.

ChibiStarJumper - Hi, Chibistarjumper, thanks. Itīd be really cool (no, BEYOND cool!!) if you got your friend to cosplay that Kara. I have to confess Iīm an absolute sucker for cosplayers, there was a comicbook convention here a couple weeks ago and a couple guys and girls showed up dressed as Tidus, Aeris and Vincent and I almost wept because I didnīt have a camera handy.

Hereīs something I believe I owed to someone for a long time; it has a couple glitches due to the speed at which I made it, but hope you like it :

I can't believe no one is interested in Tristara. From what we've seen here, I don't think it's irrational to say that it's as good as a lot of what is being published today, and way better than a whole lot more.

Keep trying, it's bound to be recognized for the good material that it is!

Wow, that's incredible. I can't believe noone showed interest. Have you considered Image since they changed publishers this year? (and since they did Cloudburst with you?) Might be worth another shot, since it's another pair of eyes. I just think this is gorgeous work. Maybe one of the new publishers in the last two years, like Kandora Publishing (dealing with similiar genres as CrossGen), would be interested.

Glad to hear Committed will be publishing your other book. I'll be on the lookout!

Great costume design on Vela.
I usualy have a problem with the fact that every portuguese super hero's costume (like "Lusitano", "Tagus", etc) has to be a sort of variation of the Captain America idea of having the flag colous and symbols all over the place, but this one works pretty well and doesn't feel forced at all.
Very nice.

Eliseu Gouveia
02-14-2005, 06:51 AM
Thanks, Meethra. :)

Yeah, I too was never a big fan of Captain Portugal-type heroes either, I mean, if you look at the american landscape, how many are there waving the flag?

Sure thereīs Captain America (and his clones) or Wonder Woman, but the large majority (and the most popular) donīt even have the stars and stripes in their costumes:
Batman
Superman (3-primary-color-scheme is there but no stars and stripes)
Wolverine
Spider Man
Hulk
(......)
Gambit

I think the key here is the character, building someone solid or that can at least stand straight; you develop his/her concept first and foremost. Slapping a flag in it to wrap up just seems like a cop out.
IMHO.:)

You are amazing!!! I really like the way this looks dynamic, even though it's actually a static pose, because of the mummy wraps flying around. Another great aspect is the colors...and how with them you have played with the darkness in the flesh areas to amplify the lighting effect. This is a great example of handling different textures as well (hair, skin, cloth, fur).

Hi, Scott,

thank you for your kind words, I really appreciate your post :)
I had a lotta fun drawing this pic, Jenna is a character that is growing oin me by the second.
I do keep making a mistake with her, though; initially, the script and character description stressed that she was a cute-looking girl, so I actually have to make a voluntary effort to draw a cute girl instead of a voluptuous babe.

Sometimes, though, my Muse kinda slips. :)

Hi, Abbas Khan,

thank you for looking at my work, I donīt know if you realise this but youīve just made my day :)

If you wanna check out my other endeavors, Iīm presently pencilling and inking Genie (http://fc9.net/images/GenieCover1b_small.jpg) (written by Jim Keplinger, the mind behind Shadowhawk) for FC9 (Funnel Cloud 9 publishing).
Itīs an all-ages adventure/fantasy book centered around Jeffery, a young boy who frees the Genie Xanda and as a reward is given 3 wishes that will change his world forever.

Moonstone Books is also about to launch a two-part mini-series called Revenge of the Mummy (http://www.moonstonebooks.com/images/mummycolor.jpg), written by Justin Gray.
Itīs an action, high-octane B&W book that follows the quest for revenge waged by an undead against the man who killed her.

Iīve also done Cloudburst (http://www.newsarama.com/Image/Cloudburst01rev.jpg) for Image comics, written by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray
Set in the future, itīs a fast-paced sci-fi extravaganza that tells the adventures of Lauren Moore, a young scientist set to terraform a desert planet that hides unspeakable horrors beneath the ground.

And General Jinjur publisher is launching Charlatan (http://www.etherlair.com/gallery/publications////FOLDER_405f7ba2a6050/images/IMAGE_429be6386ff20.jpg) (written by Gil Lawson) by the end of this year.
Itīs a superhero saga about a man who unknowingly enlists in a war for the faith of the universe to protect his family.

Not even our head honcho, Tilman Goins or even Aaron Weisbrod (whoīs helping me streamline the script) knew that I placed Cape Ruseur in Maine.
I had several atates to pick, from Connecticut to Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont...
Actually, I came THIS close to picking Vermont (really loved the name). but its coast line is so tiny.......
It all came down to Massachusetts VS Maine.

Wish I could claim psychic abilities, but your drawings FELT like Maine to me. New England may have been expensive, but it was really beautiful. I used to live in Attleboro, Massachusetts. It was about 30 minutes south of Boston and 5 minutes from the Rhode Island "border". My girlfriend (now my fiance) and I would take day trips whenever we could. We explored Rhode Island (doesn't take too long--LOVE Newport), hit a park in New Hampshire (saw the mountain face before it fell), visited Conneciticut frequently, and travelled up into Boston and Salem. But nothing beat Maine for me.

Bar Harbor, Maine was the only place Shannon and I have ever been where I didn't feel I was on a schedule ("must do this, this, and this" mentality--happens even in San Diego). For once in my life, I actually had a vacation even from my normal "busy" self. I just relax and take in the scenery and stroll or drive around. It's so beautiful there, I could get lost in the beauty of walking around in Acadia Park. I love the restaurant there with their popovers, optional outside dining, and lake view. We usually hit the Old Soaker brewery on the way out to get root beer (love that stuff!). When we return, we know we will finally take that catamaran off to Nova Scotia. We saw it take off very few hours from one of our hotel rooms looking out onto the islands. I love the little town (look of a fishing village), the small Italian restaurant, and the look of the ocean and islands out there. :)

The Defenestrator - Heya, The Defenestrator, thatīs AWESOME!
Thanks a lot, man, you just got a reserved seat near the pooltable at the Sea Bride.
Be warned though............ itīs a fishermenīs bar (and all that that implies :D).

ScottDMSimmons - Hi, Scott, thanks for the pics (thanks for your pic too, in this internet thing itīs always good to see peopleīs real faces instead of usernames).
Great resources for picture reference too, I have tons of material here (even things I thought Iīd never need to know like what are the stateīs bird and tree), but the more pics for inspiration I can get the better :),

kalabine - Hi, kalabine and welcome to this little gallery of mine :)
Glad youīve liked the stuff in here, itīs interesting you should bring Tristara up; working on 2 monthly titles I barely have time to do anything else, so to me Tristara came to represent the very definition of "Unfinished Business".
I really hope I manage to find the time to finish it someday.

OMG,
Itīs so weird that you should bring that name up, I used to LOVE Liberatoreīs Ranxerox.

However, this guy was inspired in a punk I saw in a documentary a few years ago. I remember that he was abnormally thin, so for this guy I had to beef him up a bit ( otherwise Iīd scare the readers away :) ).

Nice to see that we have very similar tastes..... :pYeah, I was a pretty fan, too. Wonder if that stuff's ever been collected.

Hmmm. I should draw a Ranx pic myself...

Yeah; its okay, one thing that might make it better would be that instead of having his whole body coming through just have a part of him like his arm blasting through the wall and have it take up about the same amount of space as his entire body on the cover.

So is Silver Sparrow your first character?

Eliseu Gouveia
10-26-2005, 04:09 PM
Nah, Iīve had other previous characters.
My very-very first one I created when I was about 10 and was called (donīt laught) Dr. Dinossaurus. :D

Hereīs how a brief background story of Silversparrow:

SILVERSPARROW was created in the period between 27 May 2003 (tuesday) and 16 Jun 2003 (Monday).
For three insane weeks (all of its 48 pages were done in the span of 21 days), a hobby that I started by drawing for fun a pannel during my meal breaks at the kitchen table escalated into a full-blown production.
The most interesting thing about this comic is that I did it without a script (which explains why the "Soaring" and "Skygirl" chapters are so much shorter than the "Broken Wing" episode: NO planning!)
Itīs true that by page 7 of "Soaring" I already had some ideas of where I wanted to take my little Jessie, but drawing without a safety net or the restraints of a pre-written script are the main reason why this was such a fun trip to make.
Did the work suffer from it?
Definitelly!
There are pages where the background work is simply laughable while in others, alien concepts such as cross-hatching and rendering were simply thrown out the window. And the anatomy?
Forget about it! There was no time to cross-check this elbow or that head proportion,
I just wanted to DRAW!
I needed to vent out my creativity by drawing just for the pleasure of drawing.
And it worked.
It was fun, it was cwayzee and I hope I get to repeat it again someday

Thatīs the official version.
The real one?

Iīve always wanted to make a Supergirl comic.
Supergirl was the very first superhero I ever saw, thanks to a comic my sister once bought at a stand when I was a kid.
With that possibility out of the window for the time being, I did the next best thing and created my own SUpergirl ;)

Hey, that is a nice art youīve got in the first link (I got the dread "forbidden" from the other ones).

Got a question-- supposedly on EtherLair you said these could also be found in the Online Comics section within the Gallery. I can't find that section. Is it not ready there yet?? I can look here, of course, but I am just curious when it will be on your official site.

Any chance for a SilverSparrow Profile Page (ala Who's Who) listing her powers, origin, and whatnot?

ScottDMSimmons - Hi, Scott, thanks for your post.
Thereīs a slight navigation issue on my Etherlair, the Online Comics Gallery is only accessible if you first enter the gallery through any of its sub-sections and then hit "Top" (the link is not visible on the front page where I usually post my pseudo-blog). Sorry about that. :(
Hmmm, a "Whoīs Who" in the Silver Sparrow universe.... itīs a great idea!!
Unfortunatelly, I donīt have much of a background work done on their history, powers and capabilities.
Silversparrow was written/drawn at the dinner table and since I was making stuff up as I went along, thereīs plenty of unresolved issues lying around (whoīs Jessieīs mom and dad, etc, etc).
Thereīs Jessie, her older sister Jenny, their Aunt Jackie (former Silversparrow I) and Major Evil (I had such a blast coming up with that name :) ).
They re all Wind Riders except M.E. whoīs also a cyborg due to an all-out fight with Aunt Jackie that crippled her legs and ruined much of his body.
And thatīs about all that there is....

Hellboy_is_cool_indeed - Thanks, I really canīt promise you anything since my Muse is the most fickle thing I know.

Really weird week Iīm having, this page was finished 5 days ago but I only had time to sit and color tonight. Sorry about that....

I love panel 3 here. The poses are dynamic, and then you have some great dialogue.... the strict instructor, the nervous youth, followed up by the protective orders from another... "I don't want minors on the front line." Things I'd almost expect to hear people say to Robin, Jakeem, and Stargirl, but they never seem to.

Do you have names for the two others in that panel, or are they just "background" characters? By their dialogue, they sound pretty important.

Eliseu Gouveia

Hi, Scott,

Thanks, you hit it right in the money with the Robin/Jakeem/Stargirl remark and itīs actually the main reason why the character resembles a certain dark knight. ;)

Jessieīs teachers in pannel 3 donīt have a name.
I thought itīd be better to leave most of Silver Sparrowīs background in the open so that thereīs plenty of room to develop if I ever were to come back to it one day (many things were done that way: for instances, Jessie never got a surname).

Funny detail about this page: The Rubberband.
It came to me in my sleep, I was having one of those plot-convoluted dreams my subconscient likes to throw at me once a year when "Bam!" , a group of elastic men apropriatelly called the Rubberbnd.
I pressed the emergency button and woke up automatically, reached for a post it, wrote it down and felt back to sleep.

And contrary to 99% of the stuff I write down from my dreams, it actually kept making sense in the morning :D

Supposedly even though you aren't able to send in submissions to the submissions editor at DC Comics, you are still able to send packages directly to the editors of books you'd be interested in doing.

Easily, Eliseu, I could see you doing work for DC on Supergirl, JSA, or JLA. I would send them the SilverSparrow work.

And again, I think you'd be a decent fit for the Ultimates, Ultimate FF, a Spidey title, or even New Avengers. How long has it been since you sent work to Marvel?

Thanks, Scott. I like the titles you mentioned, though Iīd probably enjoy doing any other one that dropped on my lap (Iīm not picky when it comes to drawing. :p ).

I havenīt submitted things to the big three in years.
3-4 years, maybe more...
Back then, however, I would submit samples regularly.
Spent truckloads of cash photocopying pages and shipping the packages not only to them but to everyone else from Slave Labor Graphics to Crossgen.
And if thereīs one thing Iīve learned is that mailing art samples to comicbook publishers is THE greatest waste of time and money.
Going to the cons in person and showing stuff there is the only way you can get the slightest chance of breaking in.

Which makes it kinda sucky when you live in the other side of the pond......

Every time I check this thread it depresses me.

Why?

1) Because you're not working on a comic I read.

2) Because you're not working on a comic I write.

It's all very sad.

I just found this thread and cannot believe how amazing this work is. Why I am not seeing your work on a monthly title from someone is beyond my comprehension. Just stunning work.

I am SO into this story right now. *hands on chin and sitting on the edge of my seat....* I hope Jessie will be okay. She's somehow been transported to "our" Earth right, and she's lost her powers? Gettin Chills....

I absolutely LOVE the last three panels of the most recent page.

Very realistic characteristic detail on the girl.
Shadowy ominous look of the forewarning character.
Then a nice little reverse, showing him leave.
NICE NICE black and whites.

Any chance you could post this page again, without the word balloons?

Hi, guys,

thanks for your posts :)

Tres Styles - Thanks, Iīm sure Jessie will be fine, the surgery went well and now she just need to get her wings working again :)

ScottDMSimmons - Thanks, Scott, Iīm gonna upload that page 7 without the baloons a.s.a.p.. Really glad youīve liked the sequential there, a couple years ago I would pull my hair out at any "talking heads" sequence I stumbled into, but over time I started finding that just two people talking in a sequence/page doesnīt necessarily have to be a snore if you work into trying to make it interesting.

Typo Lad - Well, right now, between Silversparrow and my other gigs I barely have time to breathe but sure, Iīll take a look into it :)

Thanks, Eliseu, for the posting of the page without balloons. That's wonderful work.

I've recommended your thread a few times to students who like comics. I think seeing how various comics artists work helps them see different ways of staging scenes, and again I love how the blacks are put in to help make the page visually interesting.
